Collingwood below, there's been 4 periods in our history when we haven't had a premiership magpie on our list (1892-1896, 1951-1953, 1968-1990, 2001-2010).

Excellent. So Collingwood's longest stretch of having a list/team with a premiership player is 48 years?

The next best I can find is Carlton from 1968-2007, when Koutoufides retired, a total of 39 years.

Essendon has three large eras as shown by Donakebab.

Hawthorn's best is 1971-1998, when Dunstall retired, a total of 27 years.

Current eras:

Sydney 2005 -
Geelong 2007 -
Hawthorn 2008 -
Collingwood 2010 -
Western Bulldogs 2016 -

West Coast's was the longest current stretch, which passes to Sydney with Butler's retirement.

Sad to see him go, and close the chapter on West Coast's mid 2000s flag days. Always really liked him as a player. Injuries obviously got the better of him post-flag, but his career managed to resurge around 2011 and largely maintain best 22 faith from the coaches.

Most memorable moment is certainly that cheeky (and characteristically casual svelte) tap across the goal line in Rnd 22 2006 against Richmond. West Coast were feasting on the Tigers in the first three quarters, and Sam Butler had an uncharacteristic three goal haul that day. A Quinten Lynch shot at goal, 99% certain to be a goal, was caressed across the line by Butler and claimed as his own.

Guys like Mark LeCras and Shannon Hurn are still running around from those times (even if they were a little green to make the 2006 GF), as well as Matt Rosa at the Suns (who was a semi-regular by then), so if they play on in 2018 the flag fumes will still be present. The Swans also had McVeigh in the 2006 encounter, who had played every game that season, and Heath Grundy looked a promising forward in the latter part of the season.

Butler is a great character, not that anyone would watch the eagles social media besides eagles supporters, but his encounters in interviews and during social media filming are quite memorable.

It's a shame he was injured so much and he never got to play midfield, would have been a smooth mover, however did well to reinvent himself as a backman.

Dempster retiring means Geelong 07ers are in the lead right?

Tough career for Butler - forever battling injuries in his prime years.

Went from a great young midfield prospect to a back flanker but soldiered on manfully - he actually had his best return of any season in 2016 with 20 games - testament to perseverance no doubt.

He also did a lot of work in community, one of many forgotten 'good guys' from the 2006 team (Wirrpanda, Waters to name a couple more).

Never heard of him, won't be missed.
Cool. Keep them coming.
I admit I dont really contribute quality posts myself (unless theyre Clayton Oliver related), but glory be me....32k post of no value you have given to bigfooty.

If you were an AFL player you would not be the nobody-Sam Butler type. You would be more in the "Worst 200 Game Player". Known for something but have given nothing.

Congrats to him. Clearly well liked by club and fans. Can't argue with a Premiership medal.

I will say it's either an indictment on Vic media and their coverage of WA games or my interest levels in West Coast the past 10 or so years as I cannot remember him in a single game. Apologies.

I'd say that's a credit to his character that during such a tumultuous period at that club he was able to continue playing with his reputation untarnished. You are right though about him not being memorable, as a similar post was made on the hawk board but he has played in 3 grand finals and you don't get to do that if you don't have some ability and when not being injured are an automatic 22.

To be fair his Essendon equivalent would be someone like Howlett or Hocking, or perhaps Myers. Been around for long enough but has always been in and out of the side and kept a relatively low profile. I found it a bit pleasantly surprising that there was a piece about him retiring on Fox Sports News. Granted it was just the press conference covered by WA media but they could've spent another 5 minutes talking about Jarryd Hayne instead...

I like Butler but in 14 seasons he's never made the top 10 of the B&F - which is understandable with our voting system given the fewest games he has missed in a season is 3. He's never been in the top half of our best 22, but has been consistently in or around the 22 for most of his career when fit. Averages 16 touches a game, rarely has standout games of 20+ and has polled Brownlow votes twice in 166 games. It's a shame he's missed so much footy through injury, only 7 players have played 250 games for WC and I reckon Butler could've got there with people still not knowing who he is.

Fair enough. Again congrats to him and I hope West Coast can send him out in style..........on their end of season trip. ;)

no, because the criteria is how long there has been a current premiership player at the club on the list - although there's no one left from 05 there now, they were still there in 2012, and there are still players from 2012 on the list - so it remains unbroken
