They finally had an update on the news tonight, for those who want some info... Sam Butler is the player that has improved the most over the preseason according to Woosh. Has put on 7kgs and has improved his running times significantly. Today they did a Beep Test and then something called the Jacobs Ladder, which I think involved running up and down the Kings Park stairs. Woosh also said its the toughest preseason they have done under him, hopefully all of this will stand us in good stead for 2005.

thanks a heap coasting. i have given up watching the news for any footy info, its never happens. so if i know whats happening in the cricket it has no use to me.

great to hear about sammy. i am a huge fan, i think with him and beau we have found 2 absolute gems at picks 11 and 20. brillant recruiting IMO.

its also stairs leading up to kings park

My mistake, I thought it was the name of the exercise. A bit of a strange name for a flight of stairs given its biblical overtures.

anyway back to sam. he is a gun the next simon black , hope we can hang on to him

Funny you should say that... I was trying to explain how Sam Butler played just last night.... and I actually described him as a "right footed Simon Black" Thats exactly how he plays... he seems to just have all the time in the world when he has the ball like Simon Black does. Not something you can teach.

its good to see jon anderson of the herald sun agrees with us:

Sam Butler
"A younger version of Simon Black, a running midfielder with clean hands and pin-point disposal. Played last 11 games."

Got a link to that article?

Forgive me for putting aside the blind pre-season optimism for one minute, but the kid was shown up badly for a lack of toughness and dare i say it courage in a couple of matches last season, namely our token elimination final in Sydney.

Okay it was his first season, but still, a point of improvement for young Sam.

i can see where u are coming from. the way he plays, runs, kicks does come across like he is very outside almost 'soft'. one of my stupid docker friends tried to prove this to me, so we watched a game and sam suprising won alot of contested footy. but, yes, its one area of his game he could improve.

I used to use Jacob's ladder as part of a fitness program.

What a bitch it is. Handy that it's close to the Mount hospital - they have some excellent cardiac specialists there.

Tough on the knees though.

First 2 or 3 times I saw Butler play my first thought was "Simon BlacK".

Time will tell if he's that good

Very good call. Obviously comparing a kid to a superstar is farcical, but style-wise there are a lot of similarities- same very very clean hands and skills, good overhead for his size, and an apparently outside player who is actually fairly good in packs.

He struggled in the elim final, but i think that has more to do with a young kid getting stage fright than anything else- there were a lot of times during the year when he was very much in and under.

Yeah i work at the Mount. I try and do the ladder most days at lunch. Not easy after 4 or 5 goes. Dont expect cardio surgery under $10,000 tho.

Mind you, I still think the defining moment of Butler's debut season for me was when he chased a fumbling Pavlich down, nicked the ball and ran off with Pav looking very awkward trying to chase him down. Not perhaps all that tough, but very, very talented.

So overall, the guy has a few small weaknesses, but looks like he's going to be a great player for us. Lets hope he takes huge strides in 05

now that he has bulked up he may be more fierce at the contests while keeping his skills and adding to his speed and endurance. I can't wait to see how he plays this season.
