Forgive me for putting aside the blind pre-season optimism for one minute, but the kid was shown up badly for a lack of toughness and dare i say it courage in a couple of matches last season, namely our token elimination final in Sydney.

Okay it was his first season, but still, a point of improvement for young Sam.

Why do we always have to turn players into robots. I wouldnt exactly say Simon Black is the toughest player around either. You can't expect every footballer to be a "perfect" footballer. Every one of them has different strengths and weaknesses and if his strength is to win the ball like Simon Black does then let him go for it. I would take Simon Black or Sam Butler any day over Troy Cook and Phil Read who have all the courage in the world but don't cut it as top midfielders.

i could possibly understand people questioning his toughness, bash and crash isnt his style. however, he is certainly not a receiver. he does get his own footy. i think his added size will help him greatly. it was great effort to play 12 games in his debut season considering he was bottom age and not super highly touted. the most pleasing aspect was the consistant way he contributed week in week out, he was certainly not a passenger.

Butler needs to show that he is of value playing back or forward as well. While he may become a permanent midfielder in a couple of years, he will command limited time in our midfield in 2005.

Our rotation is pretty packed already: Judd, Cousins, Kerr, Fletcher, Embley, Braun, Stenglein. Throw in Sampi and Wooden.

Butler is very promising, but if he can't play back or forward he's going to struggle for game-time.

Think about how Cousins played as a FP in his early years. He was handy enough to get a game as a small forward while playing through the middle in short bursts.

Yes but he did manage to get a fair amount of game time last year, so therefore after putting on 7kgs u would imagine he would get more. I understand your point tho. But i do feel that Stenglein will play down back most the year so that should free up one spot you have listed.

Tend to agree with that.

I'd like to see Butler play of the half forward line to see if he can add that dimension to his game.

I expect Stinger to spend most of his time tagging / playing off half back

Butler has proven himself on a HFF in his games for Perth and I have no doubt that he can hold down that position at AFL level. Moving Sampi away from the forward line will allow us to experiment quite a bit with players like Butler, McConnell, Smith, Gardiner and Morton.

love it how you all try and jump on me, its just my opinion, i dont think hes as good as you all think thats all, like simon black??? come on, long long way to go. he does seem more of an outside player than most of you think as well, but only time will tell............

Folks, this is coming from someone who thinks Alan Dudak is better than Nick Stevens!!!

If he actually thought Sam Butler was any good, I'd be quite worried! Cheers and merry christmas.

didak has heaps more potential than stevens, maybe you dont get many of the games over there, but stevens is most definately your 'outside' player, didak is slow in developing thats all, 2-3 yrs didak>stevens easy, stevens is as good as he will get.

dont be $hitty just because butler isnt that good

HAHA Alan Dudak.. There are 2 people in this world I don't respect. People with rattails (Didak) and people who like people with rattails (outback jack)

In my opinion Sam Butler is a much more talented player and better prospect for the future then Beau Waters.

If there was one area of his game that he had to work on it wud prolly be the way he plays at the ball ups, tends to ignore his player and get nowhere near the ball. For a youngster I saw Butler as fairly tough and with the extra weight he will probably be better. I think Butler could work is way to becoming a starting midfielder next year and would put him miles ahead of Sampi as far as playing a midfield position. I think its a bit early to call him the next Simon Black but everyone would have to agree that in the next 2-3 years he will become one of the dominant midfielders in the game.

you have really got to be an idiot, dont come on the crows board giving your crappy opinion if you dont want a little critism back. Half the stuff that comes from most of you, its unbelievable, like sure butler is going to be a star, and win a brownlow in 2 yrs. Maybe he might want to get in the squad first huh??

like where do you come up with this crap?? If he was a 'star' then the crows would have pushed for him this yr

anyway i know you'll say i'm a troll or watever the hell that means............. go ahead its so expected these days anyway

You might want to have a bit of a read of the crows board yourself then. Adelaide did push for him this year as it happened.

nope they didnt, they went for thompson. IF they wanted him they could have easily said give us him or you dont get stenglein.

Its not like any of you know what you talking about there is no way that stenglein will be in defence, absolutely no way

No they couldn't. Butler was under contract, as was Waters, and once the eagles said they were off the table there wasn't anything the crows could do about it. So they then went to the next available option that was out of contract and that they could get, Thompson.

from your own recuiting manager when asked on Waters:
The reality is that Scott Thompson was out of contract and wanted to come to Adelaide. He was available.

"Beau Waters still has a two-year contract at West Coast and was not available. There was no choice to be made once the Eagles put Waters off limits.

"We've taken Scott Thompson because he was the one we could get," said Fantasia.

same was the case for Butler.

Anyway, i'm looking forward to how both Sammy and Beau go next year. Both showed last season that they are quality young players. I think Butler may also be one that gets under the guard of opposition clubs next year, with the focus mainly going to our other established midfielders. Could be a bit of a surprise packet for the rest of the league.

Didn't Kangaroos offer more for Nathan Thompson while we lose picks for Stenglein?

firstly, everything i say on the crows board is backed with evidence/explaination. u just make stupid claims that i am sure 90% of the adelaide board would disagree with. a troll is someone who enters another clubs domain and makes stupid comments with the sole motive of an arguement. insighting an arguement. thats what it looks like your doing when u dont back anything up with evidence/ explaination.

u guys went very hard for butler but u couldnt do anything because he was undercontract. your club management admitted it! (see jess-jess above).

can we just leave this topic, its stupid. u guys want butler and waters and we want to keep them. if U dont like him, i dont care because u dont have him. all the eagles faithful are very very happy with him and will gladly see him play out his whole career at the eagles.

i think beau looks as if he has the goods. Also, you have to understand what fantasia was saying you see everyone over here was very ********ed off because lots of the media ppl over here were saying that they were ripped off, so fantasia was trying to cover his ass.

and i dont get what everyone means by 'he wasnt on the table' i realise that he wasnt out of contract, but that is no big deal for WA and SA teams anyway, like if stenglein wasnt traded then there was no way freo or wcoast could pick him up in the draft. he would of stayed. so if we wanted to we could say we want butler (if this was who we wanted) or stenglein stays, there would be nothing wcoast could do, if they really wanted him they would ahve to cough up(within reason ofcourse).

why cant anyone see that???

by the way stenglein will add heaps to your midfield, very underrated on here, definitely the type of player you need. and theres no way he'll play defence.

No nothing is based on evidence you dont know any more than me, its just opinion thats all, are you telling me you have inside knowledge at wcoast???

You have no idea how 'hard' we went for waters or butler, if we wanted them i'd say the trade would have dragged out alot longer than it did. And fantasia's quote was to cover his ass, as he is always doing. what do you think he is going to say 'we tried to get them and failed?' ofcourse not, even you can see that.

and yes i know what a troll is but you seem to try and say it at every chance you get. Yep waters is a good player, have to wait and see about butler, and certainly wont win a brownlow in 2yrs like some of you think
