Lol I made a similar thread last midseason but some sookie censor shut it down..... lmao so obvious to anyone with eyes and a basic understanding of footy that the kid had AFL standard talent and in all honesty on tonight's performance would be head and shoulders our best player. 4 list spots available, club said they'd take 3 players, yet bizarrely only took 2 how's Gray's prospects looking in comparison? With spuds like Samson, Kozitsche, and injured kids he'll still struggle to get a game and be the next Bradtke. Then again Saad was under our noses playing with us when we were Coburg, blatantly obvious he was worthy too. To all the Davidson doubters last year who smugly bagged the believers GAGF lol

Listen I’m prepared to move on but that’s rubbish , he’s an outside mid that gets 20-30p a game . Ours get 8-9 while direct opponent gets 30+ ,,,, that’s why u get beaten ,,, ground control to major Tom ,,, you win more positions , youre in the game

Ross’s game against Carlton had minimal line ups in the centre
And even when he did it was as an outsid mid

His main position is high half forward/wing

Same as Davidson

it really does come down to who we want running through the midfield and how we want to set it up

currently in rd1&2 we've done 2 somewhat different cba% setups

in rd2 that's 1 ruck & 4 main midfielders with 2 midfielders between 18-26% (although last year we mainly did 4 mids and dusty with the 10-35% as the 5th mid), and also the chop out rucks

who knows how that will change in the coming weeks when mcauliffe, smillie & prestia are available, and then hotton later in the year, although with hotton i suspect he'll have a decent stint in the vfl and probably wouldn't get pushed into the midfield in the afl this year

if we're to just look at next year though (with prestia retired), the cbas could look like

main ruck = nank
chop out = whoever
mid 1 = taranto
mid 2 = hopper
mid 3 = smillie
mid 4 = lalor
~25% mid5 = mcauliffe/hotton(? not sure where mcauliffe would play if not full time mid though, great and long kick so maybe half-forward rotating with lalor/smillie)

sydney are a team that basically only uses 4 mids altogether in centre bounces

now obviously you don't have to attend a lot of centre bounces to play midfield, and even dusty would attend centre bounces but then drift fwd, so these numbers don't mean a whole lot

but then comes the question, where would we put reid? or, where would we put 1-2 of sharp/rodriguez/greeves/(insert other good mid draftee)

taranto and hopper will most likely have 3-4 years to go and as it stands, probably won't get dropped unless they keep up the performances of rd2 the whole year

i guess one way to ensure smillie gets more centre bounce attendances is to have the 197cm kid ruck, but make sure he never contests the centre bounce so he doesn't a flying knee or knee on knee contact, and just have him contest stoppages around the ground. would also mean we don't have to send any of our fwds into the ruck if they're not suitable for it

so it's kind of why i'm partial to drafting that CDT guy if he grows a couple cm and dominates this year. he can develop 2-3 years until nank retires, and then we use the other pick on a mid. i'd love sharp if it meant he instantly replaced hopper who he's already better than. and i'm also a very big fan of greeves, who is more versatile than sharp as it stands so can play different positions in afl and can stew in the vfl for a few years without having a "go home factor" like sharp & rodriguez

Absolutely

I’m wrapped for him and hope he has a long and successful career

But it was just a case of bad timing imo, the club elected to back in what we already had and wanted to concentrate on fixing up some of the larger list issues that we faced/face

An outside player on the wing isn’t and shouldn’t of been the priority for us for where our list was it

You're looking at CBA stats to determine whether or not he plays as an inside mid. 6-6-6 means only three players can start in the middle, so across the first two games Ross has mainly started on the edge of the forward 50 and immediately pushed up to join his fellow mids when the ball is bounced.

Think Lambert, but a more attacking role where he stays on the forward side of the stoppage ready to burst away if we win the ball, rather than providing defensive cover.

The only time Ross has pushed out to the wing was late in the second quarter against Port.

It has everything to do with managing primary list spots and 2024 draft picks. At the time of the MSD we had contracts in front of four out of contract players (Baker, Graham, Pickett and Dusty), plus seven 2024 national draft picks.

We could have signed two more guys on 6 month contracts though, and delisted them if they didn't show enough.

If we'd done that with the Doc, it likely means Dow would have been delisted.

You are right in a sense, but he’s another that would have filled a spot on the ground that we need to in the future. He was a miss and right under our nose. He’d be getting games for us now and in the future as at the very worst a solid contributor to our team.

It’s a miss considering he was right under our noses and blind Freddy was calling us to take a shot on him in the msd with our last pick.

midfield is not centre, it is between the arcs

if he is not midfield he is either back, forward or ruck, only have to look at the fantasy categories as a indicator but not gospel

We went for a full-rebuild not a quick fix, getting Davidson would have been a quick fix mentality, I can see why we went with all kids in the draft.
