Will be very interested to see what Harley is asking for / offered in a few years' time.

He will be up there.

And if he takes the mantle as the #1 mid and realises his talent it will be worth it.

Who pays rucks $1.7m?

Who has their ruck as the top paid player on the list?

I'd pay $1.7 for year 1 and 2 and then it backs down to a more reasonable sum..

$1.7m per season?

Jeez, I'd play for the saints for that

Honestly if you were paying him half that, you are still paying on potential, I mean the Blues have played Pittonet in the ruck ahead of him at times FFS.

It would be the most desperate contract since North loaded up on Polec.

Absolutely, I remember Hardwick once said you don't put a rolls royce in the centre to ruck. So paying a ruck that much money is very odd.

$1.7 m is silly money when the cap is $17m going to $18.3 next season.

That's 10% of you entire cap on one player.

There are 40 players on a list.

How would other players feel about that?

Especially if he gets injured or drops off in form.

That's a risky move IMO.
Agree 100%. My guess is TDK will stay at Carlton on much more cash than Carlton want's to pay him. Job done.

There has been no official offer, and there probably never will be. And St Kilda will throw silly money at a midfielder.

1.7 for TDK is Saints kinda crazy money.

You never go full Grant Thomas.

1.7mill / year for TDK is full Grant Thomas.

Harley Reid... different story.

GO Catters

Then the cap goes up again in 2026 and then again 2027 ..... and no doubt again in the following years

The total player payments will jump to $15,788,222 in 2024, before rising to $17.76m in 2025, $18.29m in 2026 and $18.44m in 2027.

It could be that the TDK contract price we are hearing is overstated .... very likely less and also with certain stipulations attached.

It's all hearsay ..... what isn't hearsay is that Blues supporters are getting nervous about losing one of their best impactful players and that their current Premiership window is closing fast

Well, it's easy to say that when you've never really had a Rolls Royce who could play ruck, so on that I disagree. But I definitely feel like luring 'potential' stars with godfather deals has a very patchy success rate. And I reckon that's multiplied when you're talking about prising a ruck away, which sort of agrees with Hardwick in a way.

Where rucks are concerned, my philosophy would be: pay up to re-sign your own where it's justified, but I'd rather roll the dice on getting a bargain with a late bloomer in the third round, or someone stuck behind an established AA calibre ruck in the state leagues.

On SDK, my take is a (completely understandable) down year in 2023, followed by a solid return to form in 2024 (and excitingly demonstrating a couple more potential strings to his bow), though he doesn't quite have the 2022 gloss on him, where he was runner-up to Daicos in the Rising Star and barely put a foot wrong all year as 21 year old CHB in a premiership side.

My only real concern with him is getting yanked around too much as the next Blicavs: whatever it is, I'd like them to find his best position and stick to it. I think he'll be fine, hope he stays.

I absolutely would not bank any cap increases pay the current agreement.

Memberships, ticket sales, kayo subscriptions, all their revenue depends on people having disposable income. Australians i think will all come to understand the role iron ore has played in the building of wealth around here very soon.

If you can offer him so much that it forces Carlton to leave SDK to us then that would be just super

Thanks

I’ll start by saying I’m a fan of SDK. However if he can’t get back to his 2022 form, then I wouldn’t be unhappy if he were to leave for adequate compensation (obviously would need to be a trade). We are pretty set in our backline for the next 5-7 years and have COS waiting in the wings.

I don't think it's likely there's adequate compensation out there for him.

Sometimes you get a win at the trade table, and sometimes it's a loss 📉

Depends what you mean by round 1 pick.

I think there's maybe a 5% chance of a future history where we get back what we lost if he leaves
I personally think anywhere from 10-16 (ie. a bit more than his initial draft position) is fair value based on recent form. However as we know, there’s always compromise and it depends on what the other club can offer. Btw this is purely hypothetical; I don’t think SDK will leave.

Not leaving i think is best for us.

Sending him back to the backline with COS to come in should give us one of the best young backline kp combos getting around.

We'll still need to find a ruckman until either Edwards hits hit target weight or Conway gets out of hospital

This one feels a bit like the shoe on the other foot. It's not often Geelong find themselves in this scenario. They're usually the ones doing this to other clubs...

I've heard that this one has been in the works for around a year now. SDK is 23 and is out of contract this year. The Suns will need a replacement for Sam Collins (31 this year) in the coming years. Witts is turning 33 and will likely need to be replaced soon too so De Koning could serve multiple roles if he makes the move north.

The article does suggest SDK is expected to stay at the Cats, but as is always the case, the longer he goes on without a contract extension, the more people will speculate on his future. Dimma has a fairly good strike rate at the Suns so far with Rioli being linked around this time last year. Should be interesting to follow, regardless of the end result.

They'll always say expected to stay unless it's obviously not true.

We first got wind about a year ago too

Also, the timing of our conversation with Rowell was clearly just feeling out something in return. Sounds like it was a dead end

Turnabout is fair play. Good luck to the Suns.
