SDK to the Suns

I personally think anywhere from 10-16 (ie. a bit more than his initial draft position) is fair value based on recent form. However as we know, there’s always compromise and it depends on what the other club can offer. Btw this is purely hypothetical; I don’t think SDK will leave.

Based on history, I'd say you're looking at about a 20-30% chance that a pick 10-16 will be better than de Koning is right now, assuming he's already hit his ceiling (I think most would predict that he still has improvement in him). If - as appears likely - he becomes a high possession mobile ruckman this year, I think his value goes up even further.

Still, you win some and you lose some. For pick 10 onwards in the first round, I'd prefer to just keep him. But if a player wants out and wants to go to a particular club, you can only try to extract as much value out of them as possible. If he wants out, I'd be resigned to us not getting dollar for dollar value back for him.

This one feels a bit like the shoe on the other foot. It's not often Geelong find themselves in this scenario. They're usually the ones doing this to other clubs...

I've heard that this one has been in the works for around a year now. SDK is 23 and is out of contract this year. The Suns will need a replacement for Sam Collins (31 this year) in the coming years. Witts is turning 33 and will likely need to be replaced soon too so De Koning could serve multiple roles if he makes the move north.

The article does suggest SDK is expected to stay at the Cats, but as is always the case, the longer he goes on without a contract extension, the more people will speculate on his future. Dimma has a fairly good strike rate at the Suns so far with Rioli being linked around this time last year. Should be interesting to follow, regardless of the end result.

I don't really understand this one to be honest as to why gc would want him or why he would want to go there.
Collins has just signed til 2028 and Ballard and Andrew longer and you aren't playing all 4 in defence. He isn't playing Ruck with Moyle signed for 4 years and he isn't needed forward with walter read and king. Who out of that lot would they be trading to bring him in? For what he would cost gc would not be improving a weakness much I don't think and he would want to go somewhere he has a clearly defined role. I could think of half a dozen clubs that are better fits for him.

Weird request, but okay:

Sam De Koning, strong and bold,
A Cat whose tale would soon be told.
From distant shores the whispers came,
The Gold Coast Suns had learned his name.

"Come north, young Sam!" they called so loud,
"A golden sun, not storm nor cloud!
Riches, sunshine—ours to give,
Where waves are warm and stars can live!"

But Sam, he stood where legends stay,
Where blue and white will never fray.
For echoes rang in Kardinia Park,
Of battles won in skies gone dark.

"I've felt the roar, the faithful cheer,
The bonds of mates, the dreams held near.
Not silver coins nor summer air
Could match the pride of playing there."

He turned away from gold-lit lands,
And stayed to fight with loyal hands.
For Geelong’s heart beats fierce and fast,
Where champions forge a love that lasts.

So sing his name, let echoes ring,
For Sam De Koning made his stand—
Not swayed by gold, nor fleeting flame,
But bound to Geelong’s mighty name.

Why would Ballard be going anywhere if he just signed for 5 years? Makes no sense.
Why did Luko under contract go to Port despite wanting to stay? If you are not in the best 22 you eventually go. Nobody wants to play in reserves. SDK > Ballard is the thought.

Not that it's going to happen, IMO. Ballard did have a down year last season.

gold coast need small forwards / hff not sdk
Yeah, most fans think the same. Weller and Clohesy look pretty good on flanks.

As for small forwards, mostly potential. Rogers looks pretty good in his 2nd year. Lombard is just a kid in mature body who got injured. Then there is inconsistent Rosas.

Yes but correct me if I'm wrong part of the reason you were so keen to trade luko (apart from his overpriced salary) is he can sook and be lazy. Ballard isn't either of those so why would hardback want to trade him and why would he want to leave just after signing?

I agree with the other poster who said the Suns need quality small forwards. For example that would be a huge upgrade on guys like Holman and long etc. Whereas your key position stocks are that good sdk would be a minor upgrade at best for a high price. Makes no sense to me.

After drafting Read, Walter Luko was dispensable. I don't think Luko was lazy though he looked like that sometimes, he actually run hard.

I guess some people think SDK would be significant upgrade not minor. As I mentioned I believe Ballard regressed last year. Hopefully it was just one year. It does look like Dimma is committed to play Andrew as KPD together with Collins and at the moment with Ballard. It did not look like ideal combination to me and Ballard struggled.

I personally feel Jeffrey (who seemed to make progress this off-season and is stronger) would be better pairing with Collins and Andrew than Ballard. Way more talented and better ball user.

Holman could be just depth this year. Rogers is definitely a starter. Lombard was primed to start. There is Johnston I like. Rosas has talent and could still make it. Even Gulbin showed something. Berry may get another opportunity. But yeah, mostly potential except Ainsworth.

Long was very good last year. 2nd most goals after King (26 from 17 games). Easily Suns best small forward. He surprised. Starter for me.

Walter shows small forward pressure. Quite unbelievable watching him.

It's pretty clear Dimma wants to keep ball forward, putting pressure on, causing turnovers. I guess role players will do as with Tigers.

Rowell for De Koning would almost suit both clubs needs.

Given the progress O'Sullivan has made and Henry having his best year to date.

Geelong went deep into September without Sam and to be honest, what ultimately cost them another premiership opportunity was the lack of a quality midfielder like Rowell.

Although, things may change if Sam flourishes in the ruck this year.

I don’t see how it would suit the Suns at all, and you’ve only highlighted how it would suit Geelong lol

Suns will offer up Rowell as trade bait. DeKoning will resign. We will then get Rowell on the cheap. Book mark it

Reckon you could probably get Rowell without DeKoning prematurely ending his career but if that's what it takes, I respect the hustle.

Reckon someone else will pick him up though.

I was thinking the same thing, SDK to Suns makes zero sense outside of Suns knowing they have a player with degenerative knees or something like that and are replacing them.

Otherwise it’s throwing huge money at a guy who would be playing a position that doesn’t need to be filled.

Sam will be first choice ruck at the Cats, his best mates all play for the Cats. Seems like a foregone conclusions outside him taking triple the money to walk and I wouldn’t blame him if that was the case.

Only a practice match I know, but still gets absolutely belted physically in the ruck. Skills and mobility are exceptional for a big man but Cats would be hoping he shows a bit more competitiveness in the contest as their main ruck.

Still think he ends up down back before the seasons over.

We don't have that choice unless Conway gets fit which is historically unprecedented
