Footy Tragic mock draft

PICK 13 (GWS) – SAM DOCHERTY
Height: 183cm, Weight: 85kg, DOB: 17/10/1993
Recruited from: Gippsland Power

I haven’t heard much at all concerning Sam Docherty, so this pick is based purely on where I think he should go. Sam is arguably the best kick in this draft and he’ll be clearing the defence with sixty metre penetrating bombs from day one. He’s not exactly a stopping defender, but he can do a job when asked. Sam is very much in a similar mould to Shannon Hurn at the Eagles. He has a big build, and is at his damaging best when he is released. I think long-term Sam can become an outside midfielder.

SEN .....

Represented Vic Country at the NAB AFL Under-18 Championships winning best on ground honours against WA in one of the two games he played. Half Back Flanker who provides plenty of run from defence with his explosive speed. Kicking skills are exceptional and is very composed when he has the footy. His ability to win one-on-one contests is outstanding and loves providing plenty of rebound 50s from defence.

It is believed that a record was made with Phillip island firsts last Saturday when there were four sets of brothers in the senior team. The photo shows the eight players before the game.

Sam Docherty became the youngest regular senior player last year in recent years at the age of 15 and Josh and him played most of last year together both in the Seniors and the final series in the U18s.

Re: How Did We Do In The Draft

Hi guys, as a Phillip Is. resident I've watched Doc play all his junior footy and he is outstanding. You've got a real winner there!

Andrew Hamilton

However, the decision to go for Docherty with their second selection, pick 12, surprised me because it is the one area of the ground they are well covered with the likes of Ash McGrath, Josh Drummond, Jed Adcock and Hanley.

The selection of Docherty suggests Irishman Pearce Hanley could spend more time up the ground next year.

That, and Ash could play forward, Drummond is nearly gooooonnnee and Adcock is good, but isn't a zone busting defender. He fits a bit need, Hammo just has no clue. Hanley getting on a wing is a win !

AFL draft combine: Medium defenders

Docherty was robbed of a pre-season by a strained QL (quadratus lumborum) muscle in his back early in his under-age TAC Cup year and wasn't picked by the Power.

He made the Gippsland squad this year and was in the initial Vic Country squad for the 2011 NAB AFL Under-18 Championships, but didn't make the final cut.

Undeterred, Docherty went back to the Power, earned a recall for Country's fourth game and played a starring role alongside teammates he had mostly met for the first time just days before.

Docherty has carried that good form into the TAC Cup where his poise under pressure, pace and distribution coming out of the back half have moved him from rookie chance to first-round contender.

Sam Docherty is a serious talent that could potentially be a top ten draft pick if it wasn’t for his injury history. He only played the first final, getting 22 possessions off the half-back flank. Sam is a running defender, arguably the best in the draft at this role, with his penetrating, precise kicking as well as his overhead marking and ability to read the incoming play. He only stands at 183cm, but he is a serious talent, that will flourish at AFL level.

Vic Country teaches WA a lesson

Another to impress was Sam Docherty who repelled solidly from defence with 21 possessions and five rebound 50s.

It was his first game of the championships, but the occasion did not appear to faze him as he displayed good composure in defence.

Best:
Country: Docherty, Schache, C. Smith, Pongracic, O’Hanlon, Kelly
WA: Schloithe, Jupp, Nelson, Bulger, Eardley

Doc's dash and ability to rapidly identify and hit a target 60m up field are mouth watering. However the snippet from his highlight video that probably impressed me most is around the 28 sec mark where he taps the ball ahead of him in a congested situation and shepherds his teammate thru for a clean collect. That sort of quick, selfless, instinctive reading of the play will be a boon for his teammates.

He could be a real chance of making Hanley's spot his own sooner rather than later, as Pearce (hopefully) pushes into the midfield.

I think we've got a good'un here. :thumbsu:

Just hope the hype matches his actual output. I'm still haunted by our response after Tom Collier was drafted. He seemed so impressive but his actual output, through a lack of confidence, killed his chances of becoming a regular player with us.

I think Collier probably got away with just running in straight lines and bullocking his way through at junior level and was found out for it at AFL level.

I think Docherty has a more complementary mix of attributes to make it at AFL level. At the very least, he has the pace to break away from the congestion and buy himself the extra half second to think about his next move that Collier didn't.

As a rebounder, I think he'll be very good. Reports over his pure ability to beat his man in a defensive capacity are a little more mixed. Some saying he is excellent, others just that he is okay. This is the area that may take some more time to work on.

Lot of Luke Hodge in that kicking action (right footed version).

Be anywhere close in development and we can put one more name down on POBT's premiership squad.

The risk with Docherty it would seem is his lack of exposed form. Unlike Longer, who has been highly regarded for a long time, Docherty has emerged from the clouds just recently.

Adam Dovvie (Gippsland Power coach)

DOB: 17/10/93. Ht: 183cm. Wt: 85kg.
Pos: Medium defender.
"Sam has been a great story this year. He plays the game at a really good speed; although he doesn't test the quickest, he plays the game quicker than most. He's got a competitive streak in him and is a great kid. He is a terrific handballer and a strong mark for his size. Can play on both smalls and tails and doesn't have too many weaknesses."

“Sam Docherty is a half-back and was probably best described to me as a Jed Adcock (type of player). He interviewed exceptionally well at the Draft Combine and is obviously an outstanding individual,” he said.

The Phillip Island kid arrives

The Gippsland Power defender was soaking up some sun in Bali after arranging a three-week holiday with his mates at the start of the year.

After missing the entire 2010 TAC Cup season, being drafted was the last thing on Docherty's mind when he planned the holiday.

"I hadn't even made the Gippsland Power squad, so I hadn't even thought twice about it (clashing with the draft)," Docherty said.

"Then half way through the year when clubs started talking to me I thought I better check what day the draft was and it was smack bang in the middle of my holidays, so I started to get edgy.

"As the year went on it became more realistic so I had to cut my holidays back to six nights from three-and-a-half weeks."

"Nobody has ever been drafted from Phillip Island so it's massive for the community and massive for my family as well," he said.

"Dad was down at the pub; pretty much my whole local football club was down there [on draft night], so it's absolutely huge."

You can teach alot of things in footy. Kicking it 60m is not one of those things imo.
