Traded Sam Docherty (2012-2013)

MUST play next week. Surely.

(Unless needed in the reserves).

I have a theory about him not being selected so far - Vossy has looked ahead and realised there are not many defensive rookies for dream team next year and so has held the Doc back so he can be available for him to pick at bottom price. ;)

Good to see him finishing the year strongly. Hopefully we will see a lot of him next year after a big preseason.

providing he doesnt score to much like webberley did last year

I'm starting to think Docherty really is being viewed as a midfielder, and might be the elite midfielder we're looking for. Obviously very, very premature at this stage, but his draft year was quite an interesting one last season, and had he had the opportunities that some others had - in the midfield especially - I think he could well have been a top five pick. Very excited about his future, and hope he gets a game this week.

This is his week surely. Does anyone know if he travelled with the Reserves to NT.

It would be great to for Sam to know how fast AFL is. It should give him confidence if he plays. We wont find out until Friday though :(

might be right mate, and especially considering the midfield experiment with bot Hanley and adcock seems to have stopped, and Harwood had been revamped as a defender.

How much of that is because Golby went down though?

Haha.. Been thinking the same thing. One of my first picked next year.

I'd love to see him get a game this week. He's been dominating in the ressies and deserves to get a game.

Docherty is fairly well spoken. He strikes me as a responsible lad and an above average student at school.

Based on how he has progressed throughout the year I imagine he would have played senior footy if he didn't have the hip injury.

Michael Whiting

If I had it my way, other than the really exceptional individuals, they wouldn't play senior footy at all. They have to build a big base and base fitness. They don't really have a pre-season. They don't start pre-season until December. They're here a few weeks, have Christmas and come back and 'Now I'm an AFL footballer'. Your first day really is when you start in the new year. They're eight weeks behind, they have no base and their strength isn't good enough and they're moving from home and they're cooking their own stuff now and they're in a different environment … you think about how much they go through, it's enormous. You've got to take that into consideration. Clearly, at the moment, we're happy to play the first year players, because we want to have a look at them, see what they're capable of and if they're comfortable. Then we can pick the eyes and see what they need to work on. Some will get games and some will have to fight. In Sam's case he's had to fight and that won't hurt him.

Maybe a little like our other first round draft pick Polec.

I think reports of Polec's arrogance are way off the mark. Sad bi-product of humour not coming through as well in text from that quote.

I'm possibly reading this wrong, but it seemed that Vossy was hinting at a touch of arrogance/entitlement in Doc.

Think you are reading it wrong. I think Whiting was.

I got the impression that Docherty was pretty disappointed and that he expected to play in the firsts and he probably thought he was good enough. Voss wasn't taking any risks though with a kid who had no preseason due to hip surgery and thought a year in the reserves would do him no harm in the long run. Docherty is hungry, got through the year well and should be right to go for next year.

If I was Voss I would be pointing him in the direction of Rocky for a chat. Do what Rocky did between year 1 and 2 and you will play a lot of games Sam.

Loved what I saw of him in the first quarter last Saturday. Was everywhere. Clean, hard, skillful. Think we've definitely got a good one here.

Michael Voss

"These are important days because they signify what sort of physical gains you can make across the group," Voss said.

"There's always guys that can do better but there's some guys like Sam Docherty who looks like he's looked after himself."
