I was under the impression prior to us drafting him that he was someone with an elite kick. Still waiting to see why he was a first round draft pick. Still very early days but I thought we would have seen a bit more by now.

Those first few minutes VS Melbourne where he could do no wrong was a good indication of what he can deliver, but he hasn't been able to do that on a regular basis. I also thought we would have seen more by now especially the huge pre season he supposedly had.

Also should not be understated that he is the first player ever drafted from Phillip Island. Clearly he is seen by the as a project player with a high ceiling.

My thoughts exactly. As you said, whilst very early into his career, I too can't see how or why he was a first round selection. Another one of those where I hope to be proven very wrong.

Second year player. Give him time. He has showed a bit from limited game time this year I would have thought. Started well early against the Dees in Darwin but faded which is expected, to an extent. He has showed his kicking ability in games this year. Has only play the 9 games and I'm guessing that he was the sub in the majority of them.

On his kicking, I recall saying in periods last year that people were getting carried away by it and that comparisons to Drummond were a big reach, but yeah, people are also getting carried away with this "why was he taken in the first round" stuff this week. Its very early. There are some posters who seem to really get a reactive idea in their head each week and really run with it to the extreme.

It's not that Doc isn't that great at kicking, I think it's more so that Drummond was just that damn good. The success of some first round pick players in their first year has given people false expectations. These kids are the exception, not the rule. I expect nothing from draft picks for the first 3 years bar a handful of senior games. Years 4 and 5 is where you should see them come on. Anything before that is a bonus.

He was a first rounder because 12 members of his draft class had been prelisted by GWS the previous year and the number of first round draft picks were blown out by the alternating GWS picks. His pick probably would've been an early second rounder under normal draft conditions.

Comparisons to Drummond's kicking were certainly a bit of a reach. His kicking is still accurate and has that penetration you want. But he isn't going to ever rival guys like Hurn, Drummond, Rich, McKenzie and others.

People need to be patient. Can't expect every first/second year player to come in and have an impact like a couple of our other blokes have done previously.

With young players, I think all you can really expect to see are the glimpses. If you expect to see the total package then, most times, you will be disappointed.

Doc is showing the glimpses. There's plenty of evidence there that he should become a good footballer, given time.

Cotter, I don't think anyone on this board is getting impatient. High draft position + media coverage + club talking a player up a lot over the pre-season = higher expectations than usual. It's not that he hasn't shown anything it's that I thought he would have shown a little bit more or his talent and looked more comfortable at AFL level.

Doc is about where id expect him to be....on the fringe of the seniors and showing a bit when he gets an opportunity. If people expect more than I personally think that their expectations are the issue, not the player.

Sorry if it sounds snarky but it is a pet hate of mine that these young blokes are expected to come in and "get" senior footy straight away. For every Mayes who burst onto the scene, there are plenty of Docs who turn out just fine despite a more gradual start to their careers.

I'm wasn't necessarily referring to your post.

I don't think it is right to be questioning whether he should have been selected in the first round though. As it's been mentioned he had a couple of hic ups in his first year on board. Only played the 9 games and a couple would have resulted in him starting as the sub or getting subbed off. Saying that you can't see why/how he was a first round selection is fine by me, I just think it's a little bit premature to suggest such a thing. Was more referring to Dylan's post. Just my opinion.

That's where I expect him to be as well. Golby is the best comparison I can think of. If you watch it you will understand why Docherty will be a good player.

IIRC that was against Collingwood?. He got 10 disposals in that half and looked quite good.

I'm quietly confident he will be a good footballer. However, if he is "just" a back pocket/flanker, then he'd want to be a very good one to justify taking him with a relatively early pick. Senior standard small/medium backmen are fairly easy to come by.

If he can turn himself into a midfielder (which is where I've liked him most to date), then the draft selection really makes sense. I reckon this is another case of our list managers looking at the attributes a player offers than simply what position they play at a junior level.

Yeah, I don't see any limitations in his game to have me concerned about his potential for development. He's getting his hands on the ball, he's got pace, he's got endurance and I'm still hopeful his kicking will be quite good. Don't think he's a hard nut, but I see a lot of good ingredients there.

I thought Doc's game tonight was understated but very strong.

When he was drafted I thought he might have been a bit more of an outside player, and so did a few others who have posted here recently I suppose. What struck me tonight was his tough, desperate contested work, which was not a facet of his game that I had considered before. This dude is going places and I think it's as an all-rounder in our midfield ala the three Rs.
