CARLTON Football Club can confirm defender Sam Docherty has ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament at a pre-season training session on Wednesday.

The 24-year-old will undergo traditional surgery over the coming days before commencing his rehabilitation process.

I like Doc as much as the next bloke. Yes he's a good player but he's basically a intercept, clean up, back man with a bit of attacking run for good measure.

VERY replaceable.

Far out, poor Sam. It doesn't get more gutting than this, the road back would be looking overwhelmingly long and steep for him right now, I suspect.

I'm sure he'll tackle his recovery and rehab like the consummate professional that he is, but it puts a cloud over even his 2019 season - it so often takes that extra year (or the best part thereof) for players to get back to their best after missing a season. Doesn't bear thinking about... awful.

Absolutely gutting.
