News Sam Docherty - Another ACL :((

Apologies in advance for the long post...

As someone who has worked in the sport science field, I feel the need to try and explain why you can’t attribute any blame to ANYONE in this situation.

I’m sure it’s been explained in this thread previously but an ACL rupture is a largely non-preventable injury, and often athletes who have quick feet such as Doc are susceptible when they quickly try to stop/twist.

The most common way to rupture an ACL as most of you would have seen occurs in a hyperextension of the knee. This results in the femur (thigh bone) moving in front of and then down below the patella, stretching the ligament to the point it detaches. Short of telling a player not to suddenly stop or change direction, there isn’t a way to lessen the likelihood of it happening, and yes it’s true that particularly for players who have suffered ACL tears in non-contact situations, such as Doc, they are more likely to be susceptible to the mechanics that cause this injury.

It’s not Docs fault, even if the trampoline rumour is true, as he had long completed his recovery and been given the all clear.

It’s not the surgeons fault, as it would have been noticed by someone far sooner than now had there been a structural issue.

It’s not the Carlton medical teams fault, as they held him back last season despite the fact he had completed his recovery, and no doubt have monitored him closely the entire way through the recovery process.

I understand the desire to blame someone or something, the moment I got the notification on my phone I felt sick to my stomach and much of my excitement heading into the year has been at the very least tempered. But we’ve gotta persevere, just as Doc did all this year and no doubt will for the next 9-12 months as well.

Stuck fat blue baggers, the dark times just make the bright ones all the sweeter!

Whilst this is horrible news for us (again), I think picking up Stocker is going to prove more fruitful than first thought. He will get more opportunity, as will Setterfield.

Best of luck to Sam though the gremlins must be in his mind now. Let's hope he overcomes the physical side and more importantly the mental side as well.

we all are, awg.........different people deal with it in different ways........we're still all baggers underneath...........except that one jerk.....
I do read this you know, ffs.

That's still 73% of never doing it again.

Problem is if all goes well he still will not have much impact in 2020 coming off two, so it is basically 2021 when we might get the old doc back.

…Hello Newman
No possibly not
his body management was already altered...forget impact, forget AA.....
he is still valuable as a returning experienced Carlton man.....i just hope he wasnt pushing just that little bit too hard
fiersom competitor.....unbelievable what he contributed in 2017...
just perhaps he may have been playing slightly above his limits
a lot of the guys go into damage limitation mode....and choose safe options
look at Kade.

Shit news guys was really stamping himself as a gun before the first 1 to do it again is just cruel all the best for next yr i still expect you guys to improve.
Can you replace him with new rules sorry if has been discussed but i reckon grigg should be playing afl or if you want a defender ex melb defender clisby playing at north adel may be worth a look.

We don't need to bring in someone to replace him.
His absence last year was made worse by an almost total wipe out of our backline through injury.

I feel ashamed for saying this, but i'm gonna ask Santa to send the prospect of all future injuries to Punt Road.

Absolutely gutted!
I was looking forward to our defense general coming back to lift the whole backline, but...
fmd no doc, no byrne - who do we have to play this role now? We really need a few players to step up and surprise us this year!

Honestly I'm more devastated for him than anything to do with our prospects.

While undoubtedly a much missed presence on-field, one player, especially in defense, shouldn't make such a difference that we pin all our hopes and dreams on them. We have to be able to cover them.

But his leadership and footy brain are seriously impressive, and along with all that, he seems an absolutely upstanding young man so it just really, really sucks for him.

This is how I feel as well - just horrendous for Docherty. I worry about his mental health in the short term, and his career prospects in the longer term.

I can't find it in me to worry too much about its effects on Carlton's 2019: we do have 43 other blokes on the list, and it's up to that collective to step up. After all, nearly all of them have one more season of AFL experience than they did when Docherty did his first knee.

Never good to see players injure themselves.

From a club perspective, you can look at this two ways:

1. OMG, we lost Docherty. We're screwed. 0 & 22 season coming up. World is coming to an end or
2. We're in the fortunate position to cover Doc's absence through the recruitment of Nic Newman and return of Tom Williamson.

I prefer viewing the situation with point 2.
Willo has ability to consolidate himself at Carlton football club...superb skills and his ceiling could be anything
Newman is more a solid bread and butter contributor.....
If Willo can stay injury free i am expecting to see a lot of both these two
2019 Will see a lot of improvement............but 2018 CFC was miles behind the eight ball....
remember
-nothing good leaves
-we recruit the best drafts
-spend big on trades 2019 with cap availability
-train hard
-try hard in all games
-win more
-never give in
