There's always gonna be a handful of these every year. 2 topliners out for next year already in Brodie Smith and now Doc.

For the Eagles, Nic Nat is now back. For Adelaide, and now Carlton, in 2019 Smith and Doc will be back.

It's footy. You ride the up's and the down's.

Bad luck to Docherty - ACL injuries are terrible. Pretty much the worst injury out of all the 'regular injuries' that footballers get.

That's a shame, really like watching him play and it's sad to see anyone rupture their ACL. A good chance for the likes of Williamson and Macreadie to step up and take more responsibility.
Byrne is the one.

As bad as this is for Carlton (and fantasy players) I think the worst is thing is the development of Doch. He's still young but on his current trajectory he's was on track to become a top 10 player in the league. Might not ever reach his potential now, but fingers crossed.

Bad news for Docherty although recover these days is way better and it's not a bad time of the year to do one given he can just write the year off and be ready to go in 2019.

Not good news for Carlton but they just picked up Mullett, Simpson has a year left, the Irishman can play and their backline is otherwise strong. Docherty could've gone in to the middle to replace Gibbs but if Cripps and Murphy stay fit they get more room to blood the kids and build a deeper midfield anyway. When Gibbs got traded it always limited Carlton's improvement next year so it's better to have an injury now than 2019. Silver linings.

Sucks.

Silver lining - it seems like the opposite but this is actually the best time of the year to do an ACL, if one must be done of course!

There’s the traditional 12 months of rehab, at which you’d expect the player to be back at 100% mobility etc. This means for him, it’ll be a full rehab, followed by a full preseason, and then all things being equal he’ll be cherry ripe in 2019.

While generally a 12 month injury, depending on timing an ACL can often wreck two seasons. Do it in March and you miss the season anyway plus all the preseason which stuffs you again.

It’s a bitch mentally but can allow him to do surgery, early rehab for a few months, disappear to Europe for a while, come back, compete rehab and then do a full pre-season. He won’t be behind the 8 ball fitness-wise in 2019.

Byrne is the one.
Still young with lots of potential but just can't seem to get his body right. Will be handy if he plays, but just can't rely on him to be fit. I'd play him ahead of Mullet if he's fit to get games into him, but looking forward to seeing more of Willow and Macreadie.
With our back line being one of our deepest lines and a lot of our talls being reasonably mobile, we could opt to go a bit taller most weeks too.

Devastated for Doc. I was hoping for a change of the guard this year with Doc as Cap and Cripps as VC. I guess technically it could still happen with Cripps as acting Cap for 2018, but not sure a team has ever named a new captain while the player was injured, so probably not likely.

And ACL's in preseason are particularly gut-wrenching, although it's probably the "best" time to do it since it gives him a chance to be right for rnd 1 2019

I'd argue Brodie Smith's ACL in the first week on finals is about the worst possible time to do a knee but this isn't a compeition over which supporters suffered the greatest. An ACL is bad news whenever it happens.
