So he is UFA because he isnt in the top 5 (top 12%) paid players at Essendon, and to be Band 1 you effectively need to be top 5% in the competition.

So Brisbane are going to double or triple the salary of a guy who barely plays 5 games in a row before serious injury?

You've been around since 2015, you should know better than to ask this. There are countless examples of the AFL handing out Band 1 compensation when even Band 3 would be generous.

Given how much we're pouring into our team while our window is 'open', I think Draper makes sense as a somewhat known entity, instead of hoping some journeyman ruckman will meet the grade.

Especially if the new rules encouraging ruckman to jump at contests again come to fruition.

Ramsden and Reeves in our team are gettable. But you'd need to stop getting the top player in the draft for a bunch of 2nd and 3rd round picks.

I wonder how much him being unrestricted hurt Essendon. If he was restricted, Essendon could've lent on Brisbane to bump up his contract slightly to get it to band 1 by threatening to match, especially given how close it sounds like it was to band 1.

You’ve described it well, hes average to slightly above average, in no way does that scream first rounder. And that’s not even factoring in his injury and history. He’s not in the top 10 rucks in the league
