Ive seen Gilbert play for the Saints for last 2 weeks and seems like an alright player. Just wondering if he will keep his spot when our injured defenders make there way back in the team. Looks like we made a good move with our 1st pick from the 2005 draft.:thumbsu:

Did not see the game but saw he was in the goals. I thought he would have been playing deep floating role in the backline. How did his goals come about?

First goal came from a contested mark (albeit against Matthew Lappin).

Second goal came from a ruck contest where he won his own ball and finished it off.

I loved his game. When he got the ball he put his head down and just ran with the ball. It was just great to see. He's still very raw but definitely something to work with.

Good to hear from him and Clinton Jones in the Social Club after the game too. Nice to hear a couple of youngsters sound so enthusiastic about playing league footy. :thumbsu:

Was fantastic on Friday. Ran the lines hard and contested contested contested.

Kind of a awkward style but just love how he just gives 100% we saw glimpses from him against Carlton. Not sure if he will be able to do the same against the swans, but yeh.

Good to see another good kid at the Saints.

I would have thought the real positive to take out of Friday night was this bloke's form, as well as the form of Gwilt and Clinton Jones.

Another week before Max (who I heard will run around with Casey this week) and Sam Fisher will be back, so another opportunity for Gilbert & Gwilt this week against quality opposition.

Very impressed with Gilbert's game. Seemed to have alot of confidence and backs himself which is good for a young player. I think Jones will be a very handy player and Gwilts job on the shag was good. There were some good signs but lets no get carried away, very interested to see how we back up against the swans this week.

Bruce was getting very excited in the commentary about sam gilbert. I think he can hold his spot when our defenders come back. He can at the very least play the bench. Looks like a player who could go alright on the foward flank or pocket, as well as his noted defence. Really excited to see how he goes once he has clocked up 50-70 games of expirience

Lets be honest gwilt was well beaten by fev, Fev kicked 6 with at the very least 3 blokes defending him. Gwilt did get a bit of the pil but his primary job was to stop fev not rack up fantasy stats. Gilbert is still another pre season away from relying on him week in and week out. He does all the things you want and once he gits a bit bigger he will be a solid player.

Are you sure you are being honest at all? Take another close look at the game and you will see that from the 6 Fev goals, the first 3 weren't Gwilt's fault at all, and the other 3, one was from 55m, the other a typical small forward goal that Milne would probably sign (had the favourable luck of the bounce for him), and only in the 6th goal he really did beat James. If you add to that the fact that he got some possies (we all know Fevola stayed too much of the game whining and so Gwilt could get free), he had more than a handy game.
Don't just look at the stats, look behind them and have a closer look and you might see more than the surface.

what did they have have to say?

Nothing out of the ordinary but both seemed pretty happy with how things were going.

Jones mentioned that there had been some interest from Freo in him but he was here now.

The Cashier, I think you're being a bit harsh on Gwilt too. Fev's one of the best forwards going around and Gwilt matched him for long periods of the game. Fev got a few cheap goals and as the game went on began to outpoint his inexperienced opponent in the marking contests. When I heard that Gwilt had been earmarked for the job I was nervous leading up to the start of the match but 2.5 hours I walked away quite pleased with how Gwilt acquitted himself.

I may of been a bit harsh, but gwilt could stay with him on leads but seemed to struggle once the ball arrived. I still have ill feelings towards gwilt as a fullback after watching him lost at sea in the practice match against the pie where frase r beat him. Another thing is that a full back relies on midfield pressure to prevent good delivery. I find it interesting how Thomas used Gwilt as a floating half forward. In the Crows final he was great and second best on field to Harvey.

Gwilt should never be playing on the number one forward. He may turn out to be a very handy player, but fullback wasn't his position. Due to out circumstances, it's quite understandable for gwilt needing to play full back. I think he did the best he could of done. Would love to see him get more games in more suited roles (wing, back flank???) He can find a bit of the footy as he showed on fri night.

point 1. re practice match. it was gwuilts only 2nd may be 3rd game playing fullback and is only beginning to learn how to play as fullback .

point 2. gainst the crows. it was the the crows who didn't bother matching anyone up against him and that was one reason why he did so well. given no respect at all and he jumped them.

since then he had not done much as other teams looked at him. This year he has plyed all preseason games as a backman, and in his 2 gmaes this year was also as a backman. give the guy a break!

Are you Sam Gilbert? Are you?!

To be honest, we only really have a couple of REAL defenders in the side.

Max, Sam Fisher, Leigh Fisher, Bakes, Matty Macguire and Andrew Thompson. Thompson and Bakes really are now seen in the back 50.

Anyone else playing defensively is more for rebounding the ball forward, than as a defensive stopper. Gram and Godard and doing a fantastic job in this regard.

Raph Clarke when fit slides into this category as well.

Gwilt is an interesting prospect. I would rather see him up forward more. If, and thats a HUGE IF we could ever get our near possible line up forward, with Gehrig, Reiwoldt, Kosi, Hamil and Milne.

Having Guilt slide in and out as he pleases would be great. Start him on the wing and let him float forward. If he can develop that potential, I think he would provide all sorts of defensive match up problems.

This is the weirdest thread ever. Gilbert looks very raw, he has a very lean body and I cant hit a contest hard... plus I dont think he has the agility to counter this.

Gwilt was out of his weight division and he was beat, lets not make 'excuses'. I was happy with his efforts he did contribute offensively and although he got beat for 6 (Fev was his man and he is accountable)... I think it could have been a lot worse!
I think he should be given his opportunity to remain in the side, over Gibert, as said he would definately be another pre-season away.

sounds good but its not realistic... do you really expect Hamill to play anymore than 5-10 games?
do you expect Milne to be around beyond this year?
there is doubt every year surroundings Gehrig's future?
and when will the real Kosi please stand up?

Leaves you with Reiwoldt

Just thought I would come over and comment on this kid who i thought was great last week. Runs the lines well and seems pretty hard at it. Good first couple of games. He really impressed me :thumbsu:

Will will trade you for Lance Franklin then? Jordan Lewis?

I'm not going to waste very much of my time with you. Just re-read what I wrote: "Take a damn closer look at the game", AGAIN. If you are defending Fev and some other attacking player gets free of his man, and has a 2-on-1 against you, what would you do? Stay with Fev and let him score? Of course not, you'd try to create some doubts and and improve the few possiblities one defender has to stop 2 attackers. Are you accountable in the end if Fev scores in that play? I think not, and that is NOT a damn excuse. If you look closer, you'll see at least 3 of 6 Fev goals were not his fault AT ALL. You're entitled to your own opinion, even if it is a crazy one.

Cant recall goal for goal but it would seem your St Kilda goggles were in full swing.

I do however remember times where Gwilt got caught up field leaving Fev by himself, hence leaving anther St Kilda player 2 on 1.... I do remember when St Kilda had a 2 on 1 vs Fev (which included Gwilt) and Fev in the worst position out-marked them both.

I'm not saying Gwilt has to take the wrap for every goal kicked by Fev however I am saying that Gwilt was Fev's opponent and as the primary forward and one of the most influencial players in the game you'd want to be by his side!! I dont know what the coaching instructions were, but it played out that this wasnt always the case.

Fev is a class player... Gwilt is very inexperienced... I am happy to leave it at that and say he got beat a few times... Fev's contributions doesnt end with goals either, so you can point out that YOU THINK 3 of the 6 goals werent directly Gwilts fault... what about other occasions where he got free and set up other Carlton players for goals.

You seem to think its so black and white... hang on, Red, Black and White. I love my Saints but I have the honesty to admit when a guy got beat. Not many guys are going to beat Fev... full stop.

do you expect Milne to be around beyond this year?

Yes..

Consistently getting two + goals a game and under Ross L, is now tackling and assisting more... and this is coming from someone who last year would have been happy for him to get the chop.
