Speculation Sam Marshall

Are you ok?
I just have no respect for people who waste away in the VFL cos they dont want to leave home

Sams the type of player who shouldnt get 1 penny from the AFLPA. If you are not willing to maximise your abilities dont ask for a free handout on the way out. If you are not doing your best dont ask for a handout. Just do your best instead

He played 11 games in his rookie season, even if half were as the sub. If he leaves this year he’ll basically be leaving the first chance he gets…

WTAF are you talking about? What does ANY of that have to do with Marshall?

We should be all over this guy, we need more and more runners in the team, and thats one of Marshalls best attributes. He'd actually get midfield time with the Tiges too, rather than only wing time like he's getting at the Lions.

Out of contract usually means you won't get back what you paid for him, but I don't think we have picks in the sweet spot.

Maybe something a bit more creative like 19 and 37 for 30 and 49/50 (maybe both, I assume Brisbane won't be using them anyway and we gave them a hell of a trade for Pick 20 in 2024).

Your future is what you look towards.

The absolute best case scenario still has him in a minimal role scraping for a spot against many others. Instead of scraping by, why not walk into a AFL team elsewhere and have a crack every week? What is the justification for him staying in 2027 exactly instead of going to Carlton, Richmond or Essendon

Its the spot he is in.

Id like to think he learnt the lesson from Dev Robertson who tossed away 1.5 mill to dominate the VFL as opposed to moving on and chasing a game at AFL level. I doubt it but, they never seem to learn

We don’t know if he’ll be there in 2027 or not… it’s 2026?

Marshall, by any reasonable measure, had an outstanding development year in his first season as an AFL player, ultimately culminating in a premiership medal. That alone highlights both his capability and the level of trust the coaching group had in him when it mattered most.

I would be very reluctant to lose him, as he represents the quintessential modern footballer, a player with strong kicking and hand skills, combined with the engine to cover the ground for the entirety of the game. Those attributes are highly valued in today’s game and not easily replaced.

However, this season presents a more complicated picture. With Levi and Bailey spending greater time in the midfield, along with the emergence of Reville, and Annable in the wings, Marshall has found himself biding his time in the VFL. While understandable from a structural perspective, it’s clearly not an ideal scenario from his point of view. His body language suggests some frustration, and there are indications he may look elsewhere for greater opportunity.

That would be unfortunate for Brisbane, because we’ve seen this story play out before. Fringe midfielders often thrive when given consistent opportunity at another club. Players in similar positions have gone on to have significant impact once they’ve secured regular senior minutes, and in my view, Marshall has the talent to follow that same trajectory, if not exceed it.

The broader challenge is that we are stacked in the midfield, which makes it difficult to provide him with the continuity he likely needs. At the same time, there’s a sense he may be a little impatient, though that’s understandable for a young player wanting to establish himself at AFL level.

Clubs with less polished midfields, such as Carlton, Essendon, and Richmond among them, would be remiss not to be working quietly in the background to draw him away from Brisbane. You could also see him fitting seamlessly into a number of other Melbourne-based clubs, depending on their needs and list profile.

Players like Marshall rarely become available willingly, particularly at this stage of their development. A comparable example is someone like Darcy Wilson at St Kilda, whose rapid improvement has largely been driven by consistent exposure at senior level. Marshall, in my view, has a similar developmental ceiling if given the same opportunity.

In terms of value, it’s a fascinating situation. If Marshall were playing regularly at AFL level and exploring a move, his price would likely be prohibitive for most clubs. However, given his current circumstances, there is a window now where a club could secure a player of significant upside at relatively modest cost.

For that reason alone, I’d be doing everything possible to retain him, because once players like this leave, they tend to make you regret it.

In all SERIOUSNESS, there is really no incentive for the lions to trade Marshall. He’s on a draftee contract and may solidify a spot in our 23 next year which may change his mind. No club will offer a crazy deal that we can’t refuse either.

His draftee contract expires this year (as a Pick 25 he only gets the 2 year, not the 3 year). I can't see anything to show him signing an extension unless you have something better.

If he's OOC, it doesn't necessarily mean that Brisbane have that much control over the situation.

He’s contracted until the end of next year and on the base draftee payments for the first four years or whatever it is.

He is OOC in 2027 as he was picked in the first round.

He’s a second year player on his first contract and hasn’t signed the extension/s on offer so nothing you’ve written is relevant to Marshall’s situation, literally nothing

You’re either a troll or on crack…I really can’t tell which

Yeah I just made it up tbh

That’s actually the purpose of this entire board. You’ve just gotta say stuff with conviction.
