Mayes has been poorly used in the last few years. His place is forward revolving through the mid field. He has massive tank and goal sense.

Matter of opinion not a matter of fact.

Last year Mayes was in career best form from round 10ish onwards. He definitely struggled in defence at first but when he got his confidence back he shined. I'd be happy with him staying in defence this year, but must admit the idea of him playing a wing/forward role makes mr excited.

Holy sh*t it's easy to forget Sam is only 23. Still have faith in him being a genuine pillar of the club and whatever success we have coming our way.

And lets not forget this is a kid who used to throw up before most media events in the early days and shunned publicity for all those bagging Schache for the same traits. If a guy gives his all when he crosses that white line then how he chooses or needs to spend the rest of his life is entirely his business.

Slow starters: Who needs to pick up their game?
Chris Fagan has already swung the axe on Tom Bell, Dan McStay and Ryan Lester for their tardy starts, and defender Sam Mayes can't be far away from joining them. Mayes had a fantastic 2017 season playing at half-back, finishing fifth in the best and fairest, but has been well off his best in the opening month. The Lions need more from a man that has now played 99 career games. He has been caught out defensively on occasions, both one-on-one and in the team's zone, but equally concerning is his attacking game, an area in which the 23-year-old usually thrives in his distributing role from the defensive 50. Mayes has averaged just 16 disposals in the first month, down from 21 last season, and has already coughed up 11 clangers at 2.75 a game, well over his career average of 1.7. Mayes is a confidence player and at his best is definitely in the best 22, but looks down on form at the moment.

Brisbane defender Sam Mayes agrees to explore trade options and eyes possible SA return

BRISBANE Lions defender and first-round draft pick Sam Mayes has agreed to explore a trade next month, particularly if it means a South Australian homecoming.

The 24-year-old brought up his 100-game milestone this season but did not play at AFL level after Round 14 and finished the year in the reserves in the NEAFL.

Mayes is contracted for next season but after his exit meeting with the Lions it’s understood he is open to seeking greater opportunities elsewhere and is keen to return to SA from where he was drafted with Pick 8 in 2012.

Mayes signed a three-year deal in 2016 but the Lions are not expected to stand in his way if they can find a suitor in the trade period, which may see him move to Victoria.

BRISBANE utility Sam Mayes could be on the move despite having a year to run on his contract. Mayes is keen to explore his options in search of greater opportunities after playing just six senior games this season. The Lions are understood to be open to a trade.

The 24-year-old is keen to return to South Australia but hasn't shut the door on a move elsewhere if that gives him the best opportunity of playing regularly. After finishing fifth in Brisbane's 2017 best and fairest, Mayes had a poor first month this season, was dropped, and struggled to get another look-in. He played six games in total.

Playing off half-back, Mayes is in a part of the ground where Brisbane is well stocked. Brisbane believes Mayes – taken eighth overall in the 2012 NAB AFL Draft – is good enough to rise again and would only consider allowing a move if the offer was suitable.

One poor year and instead of toughing and fighting it out and showing some bloody heart, they mosey on out and want to explore their options.

Bit more happening in Sam's personal life at the moment and through the course of the year Dylan. Whilst we all have personal problem's that arise, It's always been clear that Sam is a confidence player. I feel living back in his home state will see him help him both on field and off field. Club see's him as a 50/50 as to whether he is at the Lions next year. I say we should expect to see him in Adelaide though.

My understanding is that Sam has had issues to deal with from a family perspective previously and stuck fat with our club when it would have been easier to bail out when things were really shite.
One thing I have learned in this life is that there are three sides to every story.
