Anyone feel we just got Toumpas 2.0

Top 10 draft pick who can’t make the big time

Nope. Toumpas never showed anything at Melbourne. Up until 2018 Mayes had played 95 games for Brisbane and was starting to develop into a quality player. This year he was poor, but (according to the Brisbane board anyway) he had some serious personal issues which likely contributed to that, and those issues were the cause of him wanting to come back to SA in the first place.

Mayes is a good player who had a bad year. Toumpas was just a bad player.

If Ollie hadn’t slipped down to us he was coming here in his draft year so the bloke can play

Just hope we use him in the same role he was an outstanding junior in ie wing/HFF

Which apparently I think I’ve read somewhere he’s already said that’s what he’s been told he’s doing?

As we know, HFF here is HBF everywhere else. #hinkleyball

Said on FiveAA last night that he's had discussions with a few people from Port and they see him as a HFF/winger.

Said he always has HBF to fall back on but doesn't sound like that's where we see him, which is good.

Sam Mayes on how his move came about:

“I sat down with Fages (Lions coach Chris Fagan) during the year and he sort of just said if you want to go explore your options you can. We kept pretty civil about it the whole time and it’s good to be coming back to my home state to be playing some footy. I’m looking forward to it.”

Sam Mayes on being overlooked by Port Adelaide with pick 7 in the 2012 Draft in favour of Ollie Wines and instead being taken with pick 8 by Brisbane:

“I did end up getting drafted the pick after Port Adelaide but six years later and I’m now at the club and pretty excited about it.”

Sam Mayes on forcing his way into the Port Adelaide side after a disappointing 2018:

“I have great confidence that I can get back to playing my best footy and that my best footy is good enough so I’m looking forward to working hard over this offseason and in pre-season and putting my best foot forward.”

Sam Mayes on discussions with the club regarding his best position:

“I think there’ll probably be a few more (discussions to be had) but I think on the wing or half forward but obviously having played half back the last couple of years I have the ability to go there if need be.”

Sam Mayes on what excites him about playing for Port Adelaide:

“They are a very good side, playing against them previously they’re been very hard to beat. They have some very good players and leaders in Ollie Wines, Travis Boak, Brad Ebert, those sorts of guys and then their youth is very very talented as well, like your Riley Bonners and those sorts of players. Obviously playing in front of big crowds is pretty exciting to me because in Brisbane we struggled to get to the 20,000. And playing in front of my family in my home state is pretty big for me so I’m looking forward to that.”

I feel like Rockliff is more of a Toumpas 2.0, mainly because Rockliff is so slow that word has recently filtered through that Rockliff will be taking over from the point Jimmy was up to in his time trial, and hopefully he might finish by the start of preseason.

Sliding Doors..... Wingard off the 'G' which seems to be what he thinks he deserves, Mayes happy to be at Adelaide Oval.

As long as we play like a bloody team I think we will go OK next year, I'm optimistic and look forward to 2019.

Interesting that Ollie was the first name he mentioned as leader.

Wonder if he knows something we don't?

Its commonly known that Mayes chucks a vommy before every game due to nerves. Not trying to overanalyse, sounds like he has a few anxiety issues as is. Hopefully comes to terms with them all especially moving to a new environment, its not easy.

The inevitable "Did you support the Crows or Port growing up?" question from Elbows and Wildy - "Neither, I was a Melbourne Demons supporter." :p

Speaking of sliding doors...

IF: Melbourne had drafted Ollie instead of Jimmy Toumpas in 2012
THEN: I wonder if Port would have drafted Jimmy or Sam at #7

I hope he goes better than Jimmy...

That has to be one of the least exciting "highlights" packages I've seen. I'm not knocking him or his ability to play a role in the side, he's just very different to the guys we traded out.

Can't judge a player on a highlights package. The club have been getting everything else wrong this season, I'm not surprised they've only bothered to produce a 1 minute long 'highlights package' consisting solely of moments from 3 games from the worst season of Mayes' career.

You'd be surprised at the number of players in the league that do
