He'll probably have to in order to get a game. He'd probably only be ahead of McKenzie down back, maybe Lienert too but I think the coaches rate Lienert so would start Mayes behind him.

Our high half forward / wing stocks are pretty much Boak (only a year or 2 left), Farrell, Motlop, Barry and maybe Burton/Hoff (only a few years left) if they're played on the wing...so he's probably got a better chance getting a game on that line.

I've been numbed by the collective experience of us recruiting Jay Nash, Danny Meyer, Jimmy Toumpas and Jack Trengove, all as highly rated SA juniors who failed at their first AFL clubs and did next to buggerall for us.

The one stunning exception to this has been Jay Schulz.

In fairness, Mayes has had a more prolific career (both by games played and statistical output) than all of the other guys to this point of his career. Really hope that he can be more than SANFL standard depth but not expecting much.

Sam hasn't had a double hip operation like Jimmy. That's what destroyed Jimmy's career. If you watched him play footy before those operations you knew he had the talent to be a very good player.

If Sam can become a good ordinary footballer for us then that will be a good start. If he can do better then that's a bonus.
 
Can anybody remember what made him so highly rated as a junior? Does he get a lot of the ball? Good at finding the goals? Did he play as a mid as a junior, or was he a small fwd?

Some info on him from his draft year ....
So impressive in his junior years was Mayes that he was an All-Australian as a bottom-ager in 2011, and then as the South Australian Under 18 vice-captain in 2012 he was unlucky to miss out on the honour again. That year he managed 22 league games for North Adelaide in the SANFL, booting 21 goals along the way. He was then known for having one of the best kicks in his draft year and a strong mark.

Perhaps one of the best kicks in the draft, Mayes is an athletic forward who can move through the midfield and do it with ease. He takes marks, he leads hard at the ball, and he is the perfect size for the modern player. He will inject all those traits into Port Adelaide, who rate him well within the best 10 or 12 players available this year. The fact he is a homegrown talent is also an important consideration for the Power, given the recent loss of homesick defender Ben Jacobs. (Aaah! They had to remind us!!)

Mayes is a medium-sized lead-up forward and a two-time under 18 All-Australian who played senior football for North Adelaide in the SANFL this year. At 187cm-tall and 78 kg, he is quick, agile and has clean hands at both ground level and in marking contests. He has an excellent workrate and is good user of the ball.

A dependable shot at goal, Mayes is also capable of running through the midfield and has been likened to Western Bulldogs star Ryan Griffin.

What the **** is with all the Toumpas comparisons? Quit with the negative mindset, Toumpas was cooked. Mayes is a completely different kettle of fish.

Exactly, Toumpas came to Port after only playing 27 games after 3 years in the system while also having major injury concerns. Mayes however has been in the system for 6 years, played 101 games and has never really had any injury problems. Mayes is AFL proven while Toumpas wasn’t, we just traded for him in hope we could turn him into an AFL standard player.

Time will tell, though I think you’re underrating him.
 
FYI Mayes averaged 20.9 disposals a game last year. We only have three players who averaged more in 2018, and one of them left for Norf.

Had a down year in 2018, sure, but he doesn't deserve to be mentioned in the same sentence as Jake Neade. Neade has never even had 21 disposals in an AFL game, let alone averaged it over a season.

off the HFF he is best 22, HBF he isnt... winger maybe....

In front of farell and certainly sgray. would have to have a big preseason but the toss up would be between him and farell for round 1.

If we're having issues dislodging Neade from the first 22 then we are truly stuffed.

Never said neade is best 22 saying he is a depth peice that when the coaches say let’s bring in neade someone pops up and says no we have Mayes let’s go with him instead or instead of bringing up neade they bring up Mayes instead
