Is it possible for Menegola to get picked this week.

26 disposals
5 marks
5 tackles
5 clearances
14 contested possessions
6 inside 50's
65.4% DE (inside player so not unusual)
a little mongrel in him

lets hope he continues his form as he is exactly the player we required.

Richly deserved and fantastic effort. Just shows you not all of the gems are chosen early in the draft.

Too old - has to be under 21 as of 1 Jan the current year.

Sam was 23 on 1 Jan, and turned 24 in March - so no he won't get the nod this week.

Wasn't this the bloke Hawthorn blew down the road whilst keeping front runners like Smith and Hill?

I am a little over exuberant about his game. Great effort

It's been a problem for us with a few editions to our team since 2007 - Taylor, Blicavs, Ruggles and now Menegola all just a couple/few years too old when they debuted for us and had efforts that would have been deserving of a nomination. And I didn't include Pods in that list as he was way over the age limit.

Just shows the success we have had with mature aged recruits over the past decade.

He's too old sadly but **** he was good. I was actually a few years above him in high school and back in the day I knew him reasonably well, just to explain my interest in him further than the Freo connection.

Serious question, does he have a real future at the club? I think he's tidied his disposal up to an acceptable level but y'all may disagree.

Possibly has a future at the club long term will be interesting to see. Wouldn't play a tagging role I don't think with Scooter Selwood coming in to be that run-player from next week or the week after.

So would have to be in the team as a ball winning midfielder I'd think, if he keeps playing like that then could be part of the main midfield rotations I'd think (possibly not the starting bounce though Danger, J. Selwood & S. Selwood eventually) along with Guthrie, Duncan & Caddy (when he returns).

So really have no idea to be honest, will keep his spot, this allows us to bring Caddy back in the VFL to ease his way back into the seniors instead of straight away. We'd be dropping Cowan first if a Scott Selwood was to come in next week anyway so.

Keep it up Sammy!

Good or bad having no time to think about it ... he came in and played like a mature player , not someone on his debut. He missed a bit by foot yet he seemed to be going for the short pass more than his more natural long boot. Probably conscious of not just "no braining" it. More games , more confidence in his place , more familiarity with his teammates.. it will be easier to judge his disposal by foot. However even without perfect disposal I feel he not worse than many a player that are regulars and has other assets that should get him a regular game. The game is so contested now that strong bodies runner like him quite often have more to offer than a better kicking outside players.

Well at 24 with the ability to bring run and contested ball..I cant see why he wouldn't have a future. What is a draftee standard ..2 year contract? One game is only one game and he has to prove himself across multiple games but I would have thought SHocking would be offering him another contract at years end.

I think he does absolutely, at the Cats we have some decent outside type players (Duncan, Motlop, Cocky although he'll develop into a Danger type, Lang, Gregson when he's in there etc) but we really do lack hard bodied big inside mids who know how to accumulate possessions and win clearances, right now we have 2 in the team in Danger and Selwood (Caddy is that type but can't yet consistently win 30 touches and plays a bit more forward) so he fills a hole and he fills it well.
If he performs like last night consistently (which is asking a lot for a debutant) he'd sit in our top 5 midfielders comfortably.

After what ive seen the last few weeks from him, and with no disrespect to him, but he makes our bottom 6 better. His fitness and ability to be inside creating defensive pressure if we dont get it or get it going our way if we do get all game long makes us better.

Hes got decent pace, decent skills and seems to get it done. If he plays like this for the next 11 weeks... it will go a long way to pushing us deep.

He's still got massive work to do but it seems the tools, desire and ability is there.

Hard to say short term.we have caddy and scott selwood about to come back in who play the same position as him so it will be hard for him to keep his spot. But i definitely think he has earnt anothet contract-talk at the club is they are very impressed with his workrate and when you are in a premiership window as we are cheap capable depth (menegola wouldny be on much money) is valuable so he would be more useful to us than horlin smith or smedts or vardy who are probably all on 200k a year more with less output.

I heard Krock adressing your Twitter question post match about where Sam fits in aerobically at the club and it was good honesty with the answer.

The club doesn't worry about beep tests or 2km time trails, instead they introduced a 15 minute run due to players having to spend extra time of the ground with changes to the interchange cap.

No surprise that Blicavs leads the way - T. Selwood said that in the 15 minutes he runs approximately 4.5kms and can lap teammates multiple times, including the warm up lap and cool down lap. In previous seasons Walker was the closest teammate then guys like Selwood. With Menegola he has helped bridge the gap, will stick with Blicavs as long as he can and finished about 150m behind the distance runner, with the next lot a lap behind from the sound of things - that puts into perspective what his running ability is like.

He can be our rising star! Like Ruggles and McCarthy he looks like he has been part of this team for a long time

Makes you think with quite a few teams now drafting more mature players, maybe they need to change the eligibility criteria and perhaps make it to be eligible, you just need to make your AFL debut in the year you're nominated.

Using that criteria, blokes like McDonald-Tipungwuti, Ruggles, Menegola, Marcus Adams, Menegola, Hartley and Josh Smith would be eligible, alongside current Rising Star nominees Weitering, Parish and Petracca.

The Rising Star is stupid, the eligibility criteria makes no sense. It favours players who only play 3-4 games in their first year, (without being nominated) and then breaking out in their second year.

Should just be best first year player, keep the nominations though, and remove the age limit.

Players can receive nominations in different years if they are eligible for the Rising Star in multiple years.

There have been 10 players who have received 2 nominations, including: Ducan Kellaway, Luke Power, Nathan Jones, Michael Hurley, Mark LeCras, Sam Blease.

There is a best first year player award and that is voted on by the players and given out at the AFLPA awards night.

Pick 66 - a very good get - might become a special number at Geelong - like 5 (obvious multiple reasons ) - but 5 nearly gets trumped by 7 ( because Joel came with pick 7 )

As for his running ability mentioned in an earlier post - i read last year that his best mate at Freo- or his trainining mate was Nate Fyfe - they used to train together - and Fyfe is a hell of an athlete

I watched one of these runs at the College last summer. Menegola ran in the second group ( not sure whether they were graded or random). He ran right on Blicavs shoulder for the whole trip bar the last 3/4 lap where Blitz slowly worked away. The pair lapped plenty.

In the VFL last week Menegola showed he knows where to run as well. Very good at getting to the right spots for the next contest.

There is no doubt he will be much better asset if he improves his kicking. As it stands however I am not worried. He has kicked long goals on the run with ease in the VFL (you'll see earlier ones on his highlight package) and he does have a serviceable left foot. Inside mid so a 70-75% efficiency would be good
enough if combined with 25 +5+5 each week.

2 year contracts only mandatory at draft age, older and it can be one year as we did with stephenson. Whether he got 1 year or two i would think on current form we will offer menegola another contract.
