He's also older, has spent more time in the AFL system and more time playing senior football. Let's see how Gore and Jansen are playing when they're 24 and have been at an AFL club for five years or so.
Even more reason why he is such a valuable pick up - he didn't spend 5 years on our list clogging up a spot while he was developing - we got him fully developed. These pick ups are crucial to efficiently managing your list, they are the number 1 market inefficiency to exploit in my opinion.

It is free outsourcing of your player development - thanks Freo, Hawthorn and the WAFL! (Just keep any potential recruits away from Brisbane, GC or Richmond, that stink might never wear off....)

He's a good pickup, no doubt about that. As was Ruggles. I said when he was drafted that I was happy we took a player like him, because given the picks we had and the position the list was in, I thought we were better going for more mature bodies that could add depth or plug holes. Menegola has been better than expected, though. Maybe he can be Geelong's Simpkin, just relevant for a lot longer.

I think the comparison you are looking for is more Mick Barlow than Joffa Simpkin tbh.

The parallel I was drawing was that Simpkin was on Geelong's list and after being delisted was snatched up by Hawthorn and became a premiership player. Menegola was delisted by Hawthorn and will hopefully have similar success at Geelong.

Since making his debut in round 18, six years since first being on an AFL list, Menegola has been making up for lost time and has quickly established himself in the Cats' best 22.

Menegola has averaged 16.4 Schick AFL Player Ratingspoints to be ranked 14th in the AFL in the past five rounds.

He is eighth in the competition for inside 50s (5.3), 10th in groundball gets (9.2) and 20th in score involvements (7.7).

The only other players to rank inside the top 20 (over that stretch) in those categories are All Australian squad members Dangerfield and the Sydney Swans' Josh Kennedy.

And he scored a perfect 10 from the coaches in the Brisbane game. The sooner the rising star award is modified to include mature-age players in their first season in the seniors, maher better.

BRISBANE LIONS v GEELONG
10 Sam Menegola (Geel)
7 Patrick Dangerfield (Geel)
7 Steven Motlop (Geel)
2 Cameron Guthrie (Geel)
2 Daniel Rich (BL)
1 Tom Rockliff (BL)
1 Scott Selwood (Geel)

Simpkin who I was a fan of was a decent player who played in a premiership and I hope Menegola will do the same. The difference is with his bigger body and huge endurance and handball in close he can become more than just a role player as Joffa was, he can become a real bona fide quality player if he keeps developing.

Ben Guthrie August 29, 2016 9:00 PM GEELONG's reliance on Patrick Dangerfield and Joel Selwood is well documented but until recently the Cats lacked a genuine hard-edged midfielder to complement the influence of the star duo.

Bit of a back hander to his brother there :p

Some people just need a change of environment and a chance.
Menegola got both.

But it does not always work - see Taylor Hunt.

He's hungry as and I hope it rubs off on some of his peers.

Yes just like not all VFL guns turn out to be Pods... , not all Geelong VFL type turn out to be Egan.

But for late picks as we had last year , its proven to be a very smart recruitment choice to at least go that way with one.

I love how hungry he is. He also seems to be confident in the way he plays but in his interviews remains hyper aware he's not assured of anything. I know that's understandable considering his journey, but I love his focus, energy, modesty, and commitment and confidence.

(Credit to all the clever people here, who after one NAB Cup half game, were counting down the days till he was available)

The thing is we hit the absolute jackpot with Menegola and Ruggles. If you go though the last 10 years worth of draft mature age recruits don't have the greatest strike rate And the ones that do breakthrough to AFL level don't always have the most longevity.

It's okay he is poling in the annual Podsy Awards

One of our better drafts and Menegola is the best of them by a distance.
I had faith in the Menegola pick as soon as I saw those WAFL highlights from last season.

I knew this guy would make it, and I had been talking him up to my mates before he even had his debut.

I'd go so far as saying he is probably our third best midfielder on our list, and it shows now that the coaches are placing him in the center bounces at game start.

Having him in the midfield with Scooter, means Guthrie and Duncan can move to outside roles, which is a huge win for us.

He is a confident bloke, you can tell the way he plays that he backs himself.

He was clutch when eveybody else was fumbling. Saved the game twice in the last 5 minutes. Love him

This man's only defeat with us was a nab challenge. And his finals performance is just superb.
I don't know if it's right, but his knee injury in that game may be a good thing for him. He's having a full preseason but he didn't have to endure a full season of footy. A few month out and VFL matches really helped him build fitness and personal confidence. Had he played from the start he might be worn out at this stage. Now his body is in peak form and he will be a huge contributor for us.
