One of the most decorated players of the 21st Century and an all time Hawk great, Mitchell's milestone on Sunday should be acknowledged by the entire footy community.

Only the 7th Hawk to get to 300, and his name sits comfortably amongst the champions of that very successful footy club.

We (non Hawk fans) probably won't appreciate how good he is till he retires, his level of constistency over a long period of time is extraordinary.

He's also got a good sense of humour

Amazing to think that one of the greatest players ever could be overlooked by everyone in the 2000 draft after consecutive B&F's at U18 level before winning the Liston Trophy two years later then becoming the Rising Star.

Ranks alongside Greg Williams who's probably the best player I've ever seen.

Made me good cash in his RS year.
Been a fan ever since.

He is one of the best footballers i've ever seen and probably ranks equal with Judd and GAJ in my mind as the best midfielders.
Clinical use of the ball on both sides. Smart and evasive in traffic.
Not bad for a VFL recruit. :p

Congrats Sam. Stellar career to date.

Should overtake Ablett, Judd and Harvey this year to go to second for all-time brownlow votes. Amazing achievement and sensational player.

Could pass Dempsey too if you adjust his 1976-7 figures back to 3-2-1 format.

Needs to poll 15 votes to pass Dempsey's adjusted total and 10 more than Ablett to claim the record.

Unlucky not to win a Brownlow or a Norm Smith medal. Will go down as Hawthorn's 3rd greatest ever player behind Matthews and Dunstall. Will overtake Harvey, Ablett and Judd at the end of the year and jump into 2nd spot on the all-time Brownlow vote leader-board.

Was stated in the Hawks thread.

Considering Dempsey and the above posters correct comments, could be the #1 Brownlow vote getter by seasons end.

Will retire with the most amount of clearances by any player ever.

5th highest per game disposal average of all time.

13th best Per-game Brownlow average of all time. Ablett .81 votes per game, Judd .79, Mitchell .78.

He should consider himself unlucky that he doesn't have 2 brownlows, let alone none. Absolute star.

Been a pleasure to watch Mitchell develop into a top 5 Hawthorn champion. He does things with the footy that very few others can do and he could be the best big-match midfielder I have ever seen. His finals record is mind-boggling really and the brilliant performances in the last two GF's closed the book on the last real question mark over his legacy.

Genius footballer.

Isn't it one of the conditions of GOAT to not win a brownlow?

The modern day Greg Williams.
Got to admire a player who week to week maintains a very high level of output.

He could very well be the last player standing in the 2001 draft. :p

Ablett, Hodge, Montagna, Swan, Bartel and Dal Santo might all retire at the end of the season. Mitchell already signed a 1 year deal for next year and out of the class of 2001 he's playing the best footy right now.

Of that list, maybe only Dal and Hodge (if you win 4 in a row) might retire. Can very much see the others going on.

For a guy that is short & slow he has proved anyone can make it in our great game.

The amazing thing is his consistency and the last 2 years have arguably been his best.
I've been lucky to see some great Hawthorn players and he is well and truly in that mix.

Wanted to make this thread all week but glad to see an opposition supporter put it up.

Top 3 Hawk of all time now.

Just so consistent. One of my favourite Mitchell stats:

Mitchell has the highest disposal average in finals of any player ever (29). Of his 22 finals, he had 29+ disposals in 16 of them (despite first tag), being BOG or close to in all of these. The next best all time is Jimmy Bartel who has done it 6 fewer times from 4 additional finals.
