No falling out, he’s good mates with Simpson. Four years was always going to be stretch with family and offers the Vic clubs would come up with.
Surely it has to be as head coach somewhere as dont think the Club would let him break his contract otherwise. Can remember reading in the past that the Club doesn't stand in an assistants coaches way if he gets offered the head gig, but not if it's only as an assistant, ie stepping sideways?? I wonder if Sam has been offered the top gig at Carlton next year, or possibly St Kilda?

Yeah far too soon but he can't do much worse than the last couple
Yes think Sam needs more time as an assistant - eg like Woosha when he went to Carlton to do his apprenticeship. Hope Sam hasn't got a bit ahead of himself as have seen failure before. Think a 2 year minimum apprenticeship as an assistant is required before taking the next step. Look what happened to Voss and Hird and up until recent times Buckley also had his failings.

Don’t know which club, but maybe guaranteed succession plan to replace Clarko or Woosha! Only know he more then likely wasn’t staying beyond this year.

Could have been orchestrated by Vince McLachlan and his cronies at the WWEFL as an attempt to improve ratings next season. He's popular in Victoria, they probably figure more people will tune in to watch a Mitchell lead St Kilda.

Pretty settled in Melbourne from what I am told .... but really like your suggestion.

Read an article stating that a lot of teams including Brisbane were interested in him. But yeah, it would hard tempting him to move away from Melbourne.

I had a conversation a few years back with Stan Alves and he told me that when he took the Saints job he was very mindful of how many coaches they had sacked in the previous 20 years.
But he took the job on ....... knowing that he had a clear plan as to how to approach the task at hand.

Also said his biggest mistake was not enrolling the Board in the journey and being in step with his plan.
He said he had the players and the assistant coaches and the Administration were all on the same page ..... but he never got the board enrolled and at the end of the day its was what ultimately cost him his job.

Said the political nature of St Kilda's instability had been a thorn in it's side for many years and he couldn't see stability being restored with the perpetual conflict between the power brokers that ran and funded the Club.

Now that was a few years ago .............. but I cant see that a lot has changed and If Mitchell takes on the Head Coaching gig...... he better be up for the role as the track record of the Saints power brokers paints a very ugly and divisive picture.

Surely a head coaching job and if so could be a big mistake taking over one of those rabbles unless he got full reign to clean the playing list out straight away. Possibility that they’ve lined up a succession plan for Clarko. Assistant coach next year and take over for 2020?

Edit: Also waiting for the inevitable Damien Barrett article halfway through the finals series “How will Sam Mitchell’s departure at the end of the season affect the Eagles ability to contend in 2018”

Doesn't surprise me really, obviously a reason when a team spends so long being unsuccessful

Hawks Board think Saints is the destination......... IMO way to soon to leap into that gig for Sammy.
Saints been through more coaches than any other Club in the last 30 years.

Patience needed Grasshopper.
Who knows he might get Gaff to follow him to St Kilda as part of the plan

This blows a lot. But we were lucky to have had him at the club for a small time, hopefully he keeps teaching his tricks until the day he leaves. Wish him well.

If he's taking up a senior assistant position then that is also a promotion and the club wouldn't block him. I'd say that is more likely, can't see any head coaches getting sacked this year.
