Doubt very much it will involve a player swap. Mitchel on unders and whoever the WCE send our way would be like for like in terms of salary so would achieve nothing for us.

But he is really happy to be working with Simpson because they are such close mates. He would not join any other club.
Mitchell personally believes he has 2 years left in him, so retire and assistant coach is not a consideration.
Really shabby way to treat a champion, but no hiding behind Mitchell now for Lewis and co.

From a logical perspective this makes sense. Mitchell is 34 and in the 1-2 years we'll probably need to rebuild before a confident Premiership tilt he'll retire. A two year contract at West Coast is essentially his retirement fund, and then he gets a guaranteed opportunity at some coaching experience. His wife wants to move back there, which is another factor. We would be allowed to address our somewhat one paced midfield, while also allowing an opportunity for a younger player like Lovell to get exposure and hopefully become a pivotal component of our future. Mitchell had given his all for this club, and has won four Premierships and 5 Best and Fairest awards along the journey: if anyone deserved a cushy retirement fund it's him. Simmo has also worked with Mitchell and knows what he can give. From all parties involved this move makes sense.

From an emotional standpoint, I hate this. There are no words to described how devastated I am. Mitchell is and always will be a Hawthorn legend, so just imagining him in another jumper makes me sick. I don't care how logical it is or if Clarko was acting as a friend, the fact that we can consider trading Mitchell after everything he's done is so unbelievable. I always thought he would be a one club player, and while I won't view him any differently for this move the very fact that it's happening is something I'm still not sure I can completely understand.

If we receive Pick 23 (possible Mayne compensation) from Fremantle for Hilly, would Mitchell + Pick 23 for Pick 12 be enough to satisfy the Eagles? Wow, the very suggestion makes me sick. Mitchell is 34 but his numbers are still extremely impressive, Simmo has worked with him before and seems keen on the idea, and if we only receive a second round selection for a legend I think the disappointment will dampen my excitement about receiving TMitchell and O'Meara.

I am more for seeing Sam be a one team player. He came up through the Hawthorn system through Box Hill, onto the Hawthorn list then to be a Premiership Captain. A five time Peter Crimmins Medalist, I see him coaching at Box Hill or the Eastern Ranges and keeping his family in Victoria. I wouldn't like to barrack against Sam next year.

I've never been a real fan of some of the drivel you post - this probably takes the cake. No Clarko, no threepeat. No Clarko, no modern day Hawks as we know them. Clarko doesn't always get it right, but he bloody seldom gets it wrong. Clarko is the most important thing to happen to this club since the anti merger victory. To not understand his influence and impact not just as a coach but as a footy mind off the field as well - it's blissful ignorance at best and pigheaded wilful ignorance at worst. We're all hurting over the possibility of Mitchell leaving - but that doesn't change one iota of what Clarko has delivered for us.

Interesting, makes you wonder which is correct (or which is more correct)

1. If the TOM and JOM trades go through, the Mitchell one does for salary cap reasons

2. The Mitchell trade is needed to enable the TOM or JOM trade

haven't had time to read all the other views 'but' Mitchell wants to coach post playing career. He may have 1 or 2 years left playing the game. Ideally we'd want him back as a coach, I'd reckon that there'd be part of this discussion around that transition where he enjoys the twilight of playing and gets ready to learn the coaching caper in another environment outside the Hawthorn bubble. He's a hawk champion and a champion hawk. If it happens then applaud the foresight by all!

I have no reason to doubt your source, but I find this unusual. The club decides who gets contracts and who doesn't. If they'd made deals based on the idea that two older players would retire back in July, then why offer them contracts in August? I understand it may have been difficult to not let a player like Hodge go out on his own terms (and I think he should be allowed to do so), but they must have known the cost of that decision at the time, and Mitchell was clearly continuing to be one of our very top performing players, so why give contracts to guys you want to retire, at the cost of losing our best midfielder and upcoming B&F winner? Doesn't seem to make sense.

The cold comfort in the potential loss of our club champion is how professional it all seems, and how Sam himself talks about win-win-win.

Clarkson doing this indicates he wants to coach us forever. This will upset many and it very long term thinking. Unlikely Sam will coach Hawthorn for the next decade.

Take it or leave it. I have never ever posted a "take it to the bank" post on BF.
My source is immediate family to Sam so I have no doubt.
I was actually told about this Friday, but sat on it out of respect to them until it was public domain.
Sam is not unhappy about going to WA. Him and Simmo are very close and he wants to try something new in a "safe" environment.
He is unhappy because once this deal fell over last trade period, he thought it was done.
He also believes there are other senior players on the list that should've been forced to retire as Lake was.
It was Clarko that reached out to Simmo this year to revive the deal, not Sammy. Once he signed on for another year he made plans around playing in 2017, then leaving for WC at years end to be an assistant for 2-3 years, then return to Melbourne before the twins were in High School.
Yes, Sam is on $600k at Hawthorn. And that was after taking two haircuts of $100k the previous 2 years to help out.
Sam headed up to Byron Bay a few weeks ago after he was given the news by Clarko to clear his head and spend time with family.
He'll stay if the Hawks won't eat $200k, but he's unhappy that it was Hawthorn that did this seemingly behind his back after agreeing a contract.
Hence why Clarko felt the need to personally go and speak with Sammy about this at his home. It's being sold as help us help you.

I think he's been a good coach and i respect that. I've just never warmed to him as much as other clearly have and i'm upset about Sam.
You do realise this is a football club with variety of supporters, many that will have differing opinions to yours.
I'm not really sure why you come here if you don't want to hear other peoples opinions.
