Would someone please confirm (missed SEN this morning) that Sam had already set up the Eagles assistant's position prior to Clarko asking Sam whether Sam wanted to move his family over early.

Would have thought it would be better for Sam to go somewhere like the Swans to get outside the "Hawthorn" system and into a Paul Roos/John Longmire system. The Roos and Clarkson schools seem to be the dominant ones at the moment.

In a trade he would have to be worth more than Deledio right? Will probably play the same amount of games. One will play at an elite level, the other below that.

Obviously a huge shock. Been in motion for atleast 12 months. Him and family were always intending to move away.

Perhaps people should listen to the words spoken by Mitchell before slagging the club, clarko and all involved.
Nobody should begrudge Sam for looking after his future after all he's done for hawthorn or the club for helping set him up for his future.
I have nothing wrong with him looking after life AFTER football. But that is for after his playing career.

Would be so wrong to rob the fans of the opportunity to clap him off as he retires a 6 time premiership player. This is worse than trading croad.

This is shit. Why didn't we offer him an assistant role when he's done? We get someone poached every year, there is plenty of room in the coaches box!

Because he know's our players too well. He's heard the same message for the last 13 years. Good career move.

In Clarkos last press conference he admitted that the game is changing once again. I think he realises that the Bulldogs setup of contested footy with breakaway pace and moving it on quickly is the way of the future.

Whilst Sam would most likely still be our best player next year and prob win the BnF again that won't benefit our development.

Letting Sam go could possibly make a couple of guys careers. If we change game plans and go to win more of the contested ball than that will really suit someone like Langfords game where his pace and ball winning ability are second to none. The Bulldogs proved that youth is the way of the future. Could allow JOR more game time as well.

He will always be a Hawk. One of our best ever 5 players and an absolute champion bloke. However it's pretty easy to see that we need a mini rebuild to be competitive again!

This is too bizarre I'm so upset more than the Croad trade , Croad hadn't played307 games:( totally different!!!

Moving on an absolute legend for cap space. Is this what the game has come to?
We are actually looking after his best interests...

Keeping him at the Hawks to stay a one club player then giving him a coaching role here when he is done is too much?
Buckley, Voss, Hird.

Being in the one system your whole life doesn't help anyone.

Move around and learn. Come back a smarter man and lead Hawks again post-Clarkson

He then becomes an assistant coach in WC for a few years then comes back to Hawthorn as coach when Clarko retires.

Quite amazing how brilliant a mind Clarko has.

Its horrible now, but Clarko is thinking about the next 10 or 15 years.
These are my thoughts as well all Part of the Clarko retirement plan, I am absolutely shattered to see Sammy go if it happens (I am going to have to have a very emotional conversation with my 8yr old daughter) but it is a positive move for all parties

So sad, but can't begrudge Mitchell anything after all he has given us.

Watching someone who is arguably our second best player ever running around in another jumper for the last few years of his career will not be easy. Don't like what it does for our chances of playing finals again next year either. Even at 34 he was holding us together all year with his consistency. Could easily play 2-3 more years for WC given how he is travelling and the type of game style he plays where pace means very little to his performance.

Can't see us getting much for him. Even someone as good as Mitchell isn't worth much at his age. Look at boomer, who was still playing good footy, but got zero interest from other clubs. I do wonder if we'd be better off if he was a free agent rather than contracted, as the compo pick might be more than we get otherwise. Does B&F placing count in the compensation formula? Maybe we could cancel his contract and make him a free agent if it maximised our return?

Whatever unfolds over the next few days, I hope Mitchell gets what he and his family wants out of this deal, he deserves the very best given I reckon you could make an argument for having zero flags instead of 4 over the last few years without him.

Paul Roos/John Longmire system doesn't work so probably best he doesn't bother learning it.

Clarko system is taking the world by storm so makes sense he masters that one.

Is it too early to start calling him a cheating sniping campaigner?

Please!!!
While this no doubt benefits Sam this decision is all about what's in the best interests of the club. Let's not try and dress it up

I can't believe this I'm gutted what do we get for him ?????you can't replace that.... At least finish your career with the club you started with.He was why I was following the hawks.I don't care clarko is wrong on this!!! What two Mitchell's in one club , too much??? God the world has gone mad!!!!!
Question. Don't players become coaches after they finish playing?
Plenty of time to find an assistants job when finished, might be far more to this than meets the eye. Cap space, need to find trade value, succession plan to phase out older players, move on some of the older stronger leaders to bring on younger leaders?

Ruthless Hawks are back.
