Personally I can't put a positive spin on this news like some others seem to be. Will be devastated to see one of our all time greats running around in another jumper for a couple of years. If ever there was someone I expected to finish their career as a one club player, it was Mitch.

Think of it as Sammy doing his last bit to help hawthorn out and get us a young player that will contribute for years to come.
In a years time mitch will hold no trade value and he will retire and we will get nothing from it other than a sad goodbye to a legend.
If clarko has spoken to mitch about this in agreeance months ago as reported then this is a strategic hawthorn move and we should all embrace it, as much as it may be hard to swallow right now.

I think it would be very difficult for him to jump straight into an assistant coach role for a group he's played with for so long. The coaching relationship is completely different to the playing relationship. Makes sense for him to develop his coaching skills elsewhere and come back once the player turnover means he's no longer in a situation where he'd be coaching his close mates.

He needs to work elsewhere first. You need to see how other people do business, get different experiences. As others have mentioned in 5+ years he may be looking at a senior gig, perhaps with us.

Perhaps thre could be some kind of "gentleman's agreement" between Clarko and Simmo that Mitch won't play in Eagles v Hawks games - they can list him as having a corkie!

Shattered. I'm absolutely SHATTERED. I love Sammy. Getting Tom Mitchell in isn't a like for like because no one in the AFL is as good on both sides of their body as Sammy.

I'm trusting the Hawks on this one, and I get all the pros and cons (for Sam as well) but still shattered.

Former Hawthorn Captain Sam Mitchell says he is open to a trade to the West Coast Eagles if both clubs can negotiate a deal.

He says the Eagles were the ones who broached the idea of coaching at the club around 12 months ago.

“Probably 12 months ago I was in chats with West Coast about coaching, you never know how long you’re going to play at my age,” Mitchell told SEN Breakfast with Frank and Ox.

“West Coast came to me with the idea of coaching when I was finished, playing there wasn’t really on the table.

“I spoke to Hawthorn about that, they know I have done a lot of coaching preparation…my future is in coaching.”

Mitchell says Hawks Coach Alastair Clarkson is well aware of the potential move and as a friend mentioned that it may be worthwhile to play for West Coast before potentially coaching there.

His wife also suggested if they wanted to move now would be the perfect time.

“A couple of weeks ago Clarko came over…we had a very open chat and he said look I know you want to go into coaching, you’re not going to play forever with Hawthorn,” he said .

“Would it be interesting for you to go and play over there for a little bit and then go into coaching?

“After chatting with him and then my wife…she was like let’s do it our kids are the perfect age, my daughter’s starting prep next year…if we’re going to move its probably better for us to do it now.”

The reigning Hawks'Best and Fairest believes were he to move it could be a win for both clubs, but says he’s more than happy to stay at Hawthorn if a deal can’t be arranged.

“I guess the way we look at it is it could be a win for Hawthorn and help free up some salary cap stuff and not have to move on all the guys that are being talked about,” said Mitchell.

“Hopefully I can go over and help West Coast if that happens.

“If I stay at Hawthorn that’s ok, that’s great. I’ve had a great career there and would continue to do so.

“If I moved to West Coast then I would be really excited by something new.”

I am not sure if we are challengers again next year without him.

Indeed. Will make it much harder to even make finals. With the TOM and JOM trades not yet done, I hope it doesn't impact their enthusiasm to come. Starts to look more like a full rebuild a year earlier than I was expecting (not that we haven't been working on getting games into the younger players this year).
