I've seen plenty of chest beating regarding the way Hawthorn treats it's players and why we're a destination club over the past few years on bigfooty. Anyone who has half a brain should understand that what's currently going on with Mitchell is exactly the reason why you feel confident beating said chest.

WC are similar. We may not be the destination Hawthorn are, but generally retain players. There is the goodwill strategy and the Dodoro/Collingwood strategy. Which is better?

Yeah, I get that, like cap space etc.

Just still Shattered...
I understand totally, but it may be a win win.

Hard not to just think about 2017, but what if the work done now, means the club contends again in 3 years with Mitchell returning to a senior role? Clarko has always had sustained success as a priority.

The only way this makes sense is if the Hawks have a player in mind they are targeting and need the cap space? Otherwise its dumb...

Still wouldn't make sense as you'd rather Sam Mitchell on your list in 2017 than Tyrone Vickery who we signed a couple of days ago on a hefty contract wouldn't you ?

How will a draft pick between 30-50 really help us compete in 3 or 4 years ? Im sorry but I don't really see anything in this for Hawthorn...

It's not Mitch or TV though, completely different parts of the list. You've latched onto his based on $$$ I don't think it's about being under the TPP for next year. I also don't know that we will understand why they did it before next off season.

There is Richmond Vickery and will be Hawthorn Vickery.

This way, at least the Hawks get a pick, which may be on traded so GC/Brisbane can pick up a later academy player. If Hawthorn drop a little in 2017, Mitchell dips in output and leaves as a coach in 2017, the club may see it as a lost development year for O'Rorke and Lovell, as well as getting nothing for Mitchell and maybe having to backload contracts of incoming players.

Can someone tell me why exactly we're doing this?

Let's look at the scenarios

- Sam goes to West Coast, plays for 2 years. We receive 1st round pick. Everyone is a winner and I suppose I can kind of understand a deal like this (particularly if he comes back after those years to coach with us).

- Sam goes to West Coast, plays for 2 years and we receive a 2nd round pick. Why on earth would we trade our reigning B+F winner for pennies in the dollar? Particularly when his value isn't purely linked to his on-field ability, but also his ability to teach and curate our younger mids?

Graham Wright says we dont need to offload Sam to afford Jaeger and Tom.

Am I missing something?
I think room is being made for another inclusion. They appear to have already made room for Vickery, O'Meara and TM and could do with another ruck - maybe Lobbe - with Ceglar injured, rumours of McEvoy considering retiring and Vickery more key forward than straight ruck. They could also do with an Eric McKenzie down back.

I trust Clarko and GW know what their strategy is, although I hope it is better than what their Joey strategy was when we traded Josh to Sydney for pick 39 and got Sam Grimley with that.

It won't be between 30-50, it will be later.

What it does is opens a list space. Frees up cap room, so Hawks can get O'Meara, Mitchell and maybe another. It prevents the need to backload contracts, so there is more cap space to chase talent next season. It also means young players get a game.

I agree. I'd rather get a player in return that's a known quantity, then pot luck in a pick from 30 - 50.

Yes, Sam was pick 36, and we've had some good fortune in that range, but it's so hit and miss. Hell, even top 20 can be hit and miss.

They've already said it's not related to getting T Mitchell and O'Meara and as for list space, there are a few spuds running around at Box Hill that I would delist before Sam!

You obviously haven't watched much of JOR have you ?

I don't believe that at all.

Also, he never mentioned the cap, just said it won't impact the deal to get them to the club. That could mean, the Mitchell pick isn't needed for the other trades.

Also consider, Mitchell adds 500-700k to next years cap, this may squeeze a similar amount of O'mearas and the other Mitchells into following seasons. What happens if Hawthorn has a strategy to target some big players in 17/18 and needs the cap room?

Yeah If we land Nat Fyfe all will be forgiven, but until then.....

Yea
Arguably our second best player in our history, finishing his career at the Eagles. Gutted.
t
It's a brilliant move by West Coast. Priddis getting the ball, Mitchell distributing it.

Devastating he won't finish his career in a Hawks jumper :(
that is what we need but he will always be a hawthorn legend jeez he teach a thing or 5 to the Eagles mids

Possibly Hawthorn made next year Mitch's last and offered to release him early as he definitely owed the club nothing and
looks as though he wants to go west anyway. We might be worse off a year early or do they know something about the
other Mitch and JOM, in which case we'll be better off regardless.

just fuming over this so so angry....who knew simmonds was palesy with mitch, who knew his wife wanted to head west, who knew clarko would encourage it...geezus thanks for the heads up guys, it felt like somebody just punched me in the gut several times today/...i don;t care about vickery or JOM or TOM i just want our favourite son to have a farewell season give us a chance to say goodbye...oh but thats right its all about premierships...mmm funny that.... can't see us being a contender in 17 without Mitch:( understand its a long term thing but you don't use your B&F to do it!
