Is shiels and gunstan current B&F winners?? Do they poll in the brownlow much ? I didn't see them even fire in the finals, I've been waiting for Gunstan to stand and be counted for ages no sign of that even with roughy out!
Gunston hasn't stood up? What about the all the Finals he's played in? He has been awesome for us but obviously struggled a little this year without Roughy. We all know he isn't the no. 1 forward because of size but you got to give home credit for trying his butt off this year. With Vikery in and hopefully Rough back Gunston will be back to his best. No doubt.

Seriously all the outrage on here is over the top...
Yep be emotional.
Yep be upset.
Yep be angry.

But at the end of the day if Sam Mitchell wants to do this for his career post playing and for his family, who are we to say he shouldn't?

Remember this is the man who slept in a hospital to be with his daughter in her time of need, yet never missed a game, or training.

Time to give back, people. If Sam wanted to play a game for every other club next year he would do so with my blessing. Loyalty is thrown around here often, but only if it suits the persons agenda. Loyalty can also mean we honour Sams wishes regardless of what they are, and how much we don't necessarily like them.

And as the last thing I say on this topic, if WCE play us at home next year, and I hear even 1 Hawks supporter say anything untoward about Sam, I just hope they have internet access in her majesty's hotel. ;)

still makes zero sense for me...He would be able to go into coaching of he played for the hawks this year.

This is one of the most bizarre situations i can recall.

I know there is a rivalry between our clubs but i sincerely hope clarko pulls his head in and you guys get to keep mitchell.
Cool with what you say.
Just need to change your sales pitch to, T&C apply / only applicable to those on contracts less than the afl nominated amount(insert dollar amount), Bondi Billionaires need not apply.:thumbsu::rainbow:

Maybe Sam feels the need to have his future as cut and dried as possible

Posts like this is why Hawthorn fans have a bad name on here.

far out, some emotion in here. To be expected i guess. Those saying we are losing our 5 time club champion, 3 x AA and arguably top 5 Hawthorn player for nothing need to realize something. If he retired next year, as he would likely have. We truly would have lost him for no player or football gain. The only gain would have been the romantic notion that he retired a one club champion. This way we get a pick, or pick swap to our advantage or pick and a player, depending on what you believe. That is actually something. Mitchell gets to the West a year earlier and the West Coast get the quality ball movement they so desperately miss (Not that that is our priority). It really is a win / win when you look at it with your head. The only loss is not having Mitchell next year, but I don't think we would be serious contenders next year anyway. It is gut wrenching if you let your heart take over.

I just don't get it, if this is all for just salary cap relief then why sign all the older blokes to new contracts last year? Was Sammy the only one who didn't take much of a pay cut and thus is the biggest contract the club can move on?
That's only way moving Sam on over Gibbo or Hodge makes sense. If Sam is still in $500k+ and the other 3 are on around $400k.

One of the best things for a player who wants to coach to do is to try it in different environments, otherwise you stay in once place to play and coach and you'll get stale.

Look at Michael Voss, was signed up to be an assistance at West Coast but cancelled it to coach Brisbane and now he will likely never coach a team again.

Mitchell now gets to go to another professional organization which has a similar coaching style and gain much needed experience.

Some tidbits for you guys.

MORE ON SAM MITCHELL

Our Hawthorn man, Ashley Browne, was off yesterday, but has a few points about the Sam Mitchell revelation, to be considered.

1. Taking a purely hard-headed, list management approach, the Hawks ideally would have moved on two of Mitchell, Luke Hodge, Shaun Burgoyne and Josh Gibson at the end of 2016. But it is not easy, nor right to tell legends of the club their time is up. The relationship between the Hawks and seven-time premiership player Michael Tuck was damaged for years and some might say still is. Look how big the Mitchell news was yesterday and multiply that by two. Moving Mitchell on now helps fast-track a mini-rebuild.

2. Yes, Mitchell is arguably Hawthorn's best player. There will be times next year when he dominates for the Eagles and the inevitable 'What were the Hawks thinking?' headlines will be written. It may make it harder for the Hawks to win the 2017 flag, but those coming in will keep them in the mix for the next few years. Mitchell leaving now just brings forward by 12 months a personnel move that was always going to happen.

3. The Hawks will be OK. They are a pretty resilient footy club. They won two flags after Lance Franklin changed clubs, while their fans have also had to get used to the sight of club icons John Kennedy snr, Leigh Matthews, David Parkin, Dermott Brereton and Gary Ayres wearing other colours, some as a player some as coach, yet the flags kept coming. At Hawthorn, the club is bigger than the individual and the record speaks for itself.

4. The club also deserves credit for not falling into the same 'prodigal son' trap as the Brisbane Lions with Michael Voss and Essendon with James Hird, both of which ended disastrously and Collingwood at Nathan Buckley where the jury is still very much out. Hawthorn has no fears about its greats moving on to other clubs. Luke Hodge might be in the same boat in 12 months.

5. Thinking one step ahead of the pack has always been a Mitchell trait. You can see it in how he plays. He reads the play better than any player in the competition. One source said of Mitchell said he has been planning his move into coaching for some time now and that he had already identified the club he wants to join as an assistant coach. The same source said the end game is to return to Hawthorn as senior coach.

6. One downside for supporters is that they don't get the chance to say goodbye to Mitchell properly. But given the goodwill that seems the hallmark of this move, don't rule out a farewell motorcade for Mitchell at an MCG home game next year if his West Coast commitments allow it. Easter Monday could be a chance if it's a Hawthorn home game against Geelong.

We've all been sold a lemon -this is an awful decision by the club. Does anyone honestly think sam is champing at the bit to play for a club that has to fly thousands of kms every second week?
We've tipped out not only the wrong bloke but the guy who's copped more physical punishment and been the most selfless (6x 1 year deals?) than anyone else in this era. This is a culture killing moment...anyone swallowing the afl media rhetoric is a fool.

I am starting to think the same thing. Don't believe everything you read or hear, including Sam's explanation from yesterday which was full of contradictions.

Totally agree. This is Clarkson's 'jumping the shark' moment. Jobs for the boys at the expense of Hawthorn's flag challenge in 2017. Pick swaps in return for one of our greatest players of all time? You must be joking. It's handing West Coast a top 4 spot.

I've seen very little angst pointed in Mitchell's direction on here to be honest.

After the remarkable service he's given the club, nobody could begrudge him departing if it's the right move for him and his family, and if he had initiated this trade off his own bat I'm sure we'd all be expressing shock and disappointment but for the most part thanking him for all he's done and wishing him all the best.

What's sticking in everyone's craw is that in reality Mitch has actually been pushed out by the club - he was signed on for next year and happy to stay, and Clarko "blindsided" him by suggesting that an immediate trade to the Eagles might be in his best interests.

Those of us who are upset or angry are generally directing this at the club for creating this situation, not at Mitch for running with it.

Here's a thought. Michael Jordan played for Chicago Bulls, White Sox and Washington Wizards. To the purist, he will always be a Bulls man. No different for Sam Mitchell.
Dermie. Is he a Hawk, a Swan or a Pie. He left under far worse circumstances. Basically openly slated the club for not paying him enough. Sammy will always be 5 times Crimmins medal winner, 4 time premiership champ and premiership captain at the Hawks. He will NEVER be that anywhere else. he is a Hawk, full stop.

Jobs for the boys? Is Clarko's best mate lining up for us in the centre square next year? It's truly astounding the vitriol coming Clarko's way.

That "suggestion" also came with "mate we are happy for you to be here". He was given options, all of that is on public record. Everything else is rumor and hearsay that we cling onto because it serves our distaste for the trade

I am not sure that's correct... I thought Clarko went to him suggesting he leave ? so its not that Mitchell wanted to play at WC next year, he just wanted to coach there a year or two down the line...so the real anger is , why go to our best player, when in a premiership window, and almost push him out the door ?

No unlike you I believe in loyalty something that is sorely lacking in the AFL.So abusing me is your biggest win for the day! get off it!!

Reading your mean spirited, inarticulate and highly abusive rant where you disparage Luke Hodge among others says all I need to know about you and your loyalty.
You aint got none.
You don't know none.
You're a self serving troll who wets the bed nearly every post, all season and now year long, hoping to be understood and commiserated with for your foul weather outlook on life and football.

It's plain old disturbing is what it is.
