I've seen very little angst pointed in Mitchell's direction on here to be honest.

After the remarkable service he's given the club, nobody could begrudge him departing if it's the right move for him and his family, and if he had initiated this trade off his own bat I'm sure we'd all be expressing shock and disappointment but for the most part thanking him for all he's done and wishing him all the best.

What's sticking in everyone's craw is that in reality Mitch has actually been pushed out by the club - he was signed on for next year and happy to stay, and Clarko "blindsided" him by suggesting that an immediate trade to the Eagles might be in his best interests.

Those of us who are upset or angry are generally directing this at the club for creating this situation, not at Mitch for running with it.
I never said anyone is angry at Sam. Everyone is clearly upset at Clarko/Hawthorn.

Haven't seen anything from Sam saying he was pushed out. What I did see was him being offered to move to Perth before he needs to pull his girls out of school, OR HIM BEING MORE THAN WELCOME TO PLAY THIS YEAR WITH US.

I'm happy to take what Sam and Clarko are saying on face value, because they've never lied before. Why is it too hard to fathom that someone wants to experience a different play style, team environment before they move into the career they've wanted more than actually playing??

Jobs for the boys? Is Clarko's best mate lining up for us in the centre square next year? It's truly astounding the vitriol coming Clarko's way.

This is a cosy arrangement to help out Clarko's mate Adam Simpson, with dubious extra benefits for Mitchell's future coaching career. It's a strange incestuous little arrangement that smacks of hubris. No one has been a greater admirer of Clarko than me from day 1, but this scenario has an extremely bad smell about it.

Very confusing time for all of us. In a way I don't believe anything that is said in the media and atm I don't believe what is coming out of the HFC. It's a bit like when one of our players is injured and what is meant to be a 2 week injury turns into a 10 weeker!! Sugar coating if you get my drift.

But at the end of the day, The club will either look like geniuses or this will be a huge fk up and will damage all the good hard work that has been done over the last 10 years. Time will only tell. BUT, if Vickery, T.Mitch and (Maybe) J.O'Meara do not fire, then I fear for the club. Having said that, Mitch was our best player by a country mile this year, SO, yep we had an off year, but having sacrificed arguably our best player over the last 10 years, the rest of the list might just want to pull their collective fingers out!! And that is putting it politely.

I don't like the idea of Mitch going, but something tells me that there is something else going on, that the club is keeping very close to their chest.

You know that Sammy is closer to Simmo than Clarko is, right? It's part of the reason he wants to go there to coach.

Good effort mate!! Here's my version... Clarko has F....... lost his mind!! He is trying to be big Giver so he can think of himself as an amazing human being who only cares about looking after and helping people around him... Hawthorn management respect his achievements way too much to question anything he says...so they blindly follow him... and Now this attitude is coming at the cost of our success chances!! It would be nice if, like everyone else in this industry, he was held accountable for his actions.. I am not denying he's a legend given what he has done for us... but when you beat your chest at the B&F saying our supporters are our heartbeat, you don't make decisions like this which show no regard for supporters sentiments.. Maybe his time is done,,, or should be otherwise he will end up sending all our intellectual property to other clubs just so he can HELP them out... who cares about the supporters hey!

Wow.
I guess the supporters should run the club, at least the ones that agree with you.
No doubt you'll do an amazing job, but if you can't deliver 4 flags, 3 in 4 years, you will enjoy having you name, reputation, and very essence of being a decent human being - trashed by people on the internet.

Quality stuff.

As with every true Hawk I was stunned by the news but on digesting it I absolutely agree with it. Mitchell will always be a Hawthorn legend and a final season or two at West Coast won't change that. He is 34 and has a limited playing future. To sacrifice club success for the sake of one players' career is taking the wrong path. On top of everything else it is an amicable deal all round.

We lost 4 of our last 6 games (would have been 5 if not for Fitzpatrick) and as there were no retirements it would have meant that the romantic ideals of seeing Mitchell retire a one club legend would likely coincide with the club slipping a bit further. It would be near impossible to replace Mitchell, Hodge, Gibson and Burgoyne with quality replacements in a single trade period at the end of next year if they were to all retire at one time.

To bring in Vickery, Tom Mitchell and O'Meara will greatly strengthen key areas and still allow a similar scenario next year which will give the club its best chance to stay at the top.

Ty Vickery - age 26 $500,000 per season
Tom Mitchell - age 23 $600,000 per season
Jaeger O'Meara - age 22 $750,000 per season (all figures are estimates from media speculation)

This greatly rejuvenates our list but comes at a cost of $1.85m. With no retirees or trades it would be impossible to bring talent in. Hodge, Burgoyne and Gibson took approx pay cuts totaling about $600,000 and Brad Hill will clear about $450,000. With Mitchell leaving that will just about meet the total required.

Next year Hodge, Burgoyne and Gibson may all retire which will create another $1.5m available to seek targets such as Fyfe etc. and this will keep the club in a strong onfield position - the club is bigger than the individual.

I will miss Mitchell and it will hurt to see him play for the Eagles but it is the right move for the club. Remember that it was a similar decision to offload Croad in a contentious manner that actually brought Mitchell to the club in the first place.

Very very good post.

still makes zero sense for me...He would be able to go into coaching of he played for the hawks this year.

This is one of the most bizarre situations i can recall.

I know there is a rivalry between our clubs but i sincerely hope clarko pulls his head in and you guys get to keep mitchell.
Could you imagine Goodes playing his last 2 years in other colours after winning the B&F in exchange for pick 70 and cap space to recruit Vickery and a guy with bung knees, while hanging on to O'Keefe and few others that have shown signs of slowing.

Unless the trade is ridiculously good, cannot understand it.

I am starting to think the same thing. Don't believe everything you read or hear, including Sam's explanation from yesterday which was full of contradictions.

That's you in the middle wearing the tin pot on your head, right?:p
I am reliably told it keeps ASIO from being able to hear your thoughts.....

Totally agree. This is Clarkson's 'jumping the shark' moment. Jobs for the boys at the expense of Hawthorn's flag challenge in 2017. Pick swaps in return for one of our greatest players of all time? You must be joking. It's handing West Coast a top 4 spot.

Clarko cares more about Hawthorn than you do or will ever know.
Why would he knowingly screw the club?
Absolute piffle.

Exactly, non-football factors were actually considered as a part of a football decision. I don't think we should do it for every player that walks through the door, however given his career with us I think the club should do its best to help with post playing life, even if it generates some short term pain.

Laugh all you like. Nothing adds up with this whole business to me.

I know, but it's same argument that those who cannot imagine an atom split, and then be able to have it's inner constituents like protons and electrons be split again, so that we can then 'see' such fundamental particles such as quarks and gluons and muons and measure their spins.......throw their hands up in the air in disbelief of scientific explanation and suggest conspiracy and intellectual elitism meant to diminish their own lack of smarts and belief in more humble earthly explanations.

Just cause you don't understand doesn't mean anything is wrong with what has been presented.
You just don't have the knowledge to know better.

Ha ha that's funny, you're too much.
Advice taken but not accepted.
Last time I looked it was the Hawks board.
Cheers:p

Love your posts you know what your talking about!!! Gibbo and hodge are gone yet they're sitting ready to do a pre season:( hodge is so arrogant I saw him in the after game interview loss to the dogs quashing rumours of retirement he looked at the camera intently and said I'm going nowhere! He just didn't know it was his time and we'll get caught out in games with him playing:(

Why in God's name are you rubbishing Hodge? Tantrums about Sam but you seem to think our other champ is a piece of $hit. You are the worst. Have a lie down mate.

WRONG!
We should make Sam play here next year even if he would prefer to be in Perth to experience different team dynamics, different playing styles, different coaching philosophies and different conditions before he starts his life long choice career. I mean who cares what he would ultimately prefer as long as I get to see him retire the way I want.

Oh and there's some seriously dodgy behind the scene stuff going on and we butchered our salary cap and the moon landing was faked in a Holywood basement OH AND Ty Vickery and busted knees and were not going to win the flag and jobs for mates and WTC was an inside job and how can we treat Hawthorn royality like this aaaannnnnnnnnnnnnnndddddddddddddd

Jesus Christ whinging like that for just one paragraph was exhausting enough. How are people writing walls of text like that?!

Be happy for the bloke.

Sorry to offend you, Different strokes for different folks, just picking up on an out of date tag on his posting that was left on there to stick it up other anyway.
I have no problem with opposition fans on our board, quite enjoy the banter at times.

So how is working for left wing activist groups working for you, nothing much else to complain about?

Is that why we have linear string theory as a way to prove or otherwise relativity.

These 'our flag chances for 2017' posts are so idiotic. Have a look at our 2016 season, particularly the last 8 or so matches we played. Continuing on using our game style/current player setup of the past few years was not going to yield another premiership any time soon. We had a brilliant run but the comp has adapted. We need to evolve and look to the future. Identify our deficiencies and look to correct them.
Vickery, T Mitchell, O'Meara and the re-signing of Brand go a fair way in, hopefully, correcting these issues. I'm gutted to lose Sam Mitchell, like everyone, but if it's something that genuinely helps him and it allows the club to begin plotting the next run at being a consistent contender, it's smart football business.

Dermie. Is he a Hawk, a Swan or a Pie. He left under far worse circumstances. Basically openly slated the club for not paying him enough. Sammy will always be 5 times Crimmins medal winner, 4 time premiership champ and premiership captain at the Hawks. He will NEVER be that anywhere else. he is a Hawk, full stop.
That's because there club completely disrespected him with their offer. Blame the poorly run board.. You know, the one that nearly put an end to our existence.
