Still, not a nice pressure to have on you. Seem more humane to offer clubs a discount off their cap in extreme circumstances. You could define it tightly so clubs like Sydney don't use it to wimp out of the last year or two of Buddy's contract... Not sure if it really would hep us, but just don't like the pressure on the injured player
I'm sure if he retires the afl will allow us to work something out.

I'm trying to interpret it some other way than what he said?

Nah bud, I'm taking everything he, Simmo and Clarko have said on face value. At no point have I said 'To me that says...', unlike yourself.
Logical sense is pretty subjective around here.

Sorry, I didn't realise you weren't the original poster that I quoted.

Not sure why you are quoting me.

That's you in the middle wearing the tin pot on your head, right?:p
I am reliably told it keeps ASIO from being able to hear your thoughts.....
Technically that's Schoey in the middle wearing the 2015 Premiership cup :D

So, Judd is a Carlton Brownlow medalist? I don't think so!
Chris Judd is a Carlton Brownlow Medalist, he's not a two time Carlton Brownlow medalist though ;)

I suspect all 4 veterans were offered contract extensions as a gesture of good will and morale, thinking at least 1 would probably have put their hand up to retire at years end. Since that didn't happen, the opportunity for Sam to go was maybe raised as an alternative.

Could Wrighty pull off pick 23 and Sammy for the WCE pick 12?
no.

if you're expecting to get anything other than cap space and some largely irrelevant pick from the Mitchell deal you're going to be disappointed

Haha Thai - he won it playing for both clubs.

My bad. Should have searched, and not rely on my old head.

2010 a nothing year and not worth recording in the memory.
Premiers Collingwood, and medal Judd.
Forgotten again already.

If Salary Cap is really an issue then the club should delist Roughead. Roughead didn't even play a game for the club last year!

Either that or the club can show loyalty to Roughead, and they could show some loyalty and respect to Sam, the best player in our 3-peat era and our reigning PCM.

Seriously the club ****ed up by not making hard decisions on the 30+ 4 this year. I couldn't believe it when they ALL got contract extensions and I wasn't really that excited when all the contracts were announced (mainly because I thought the club was in danger of heading down the Brisbane 2005+ where they kept their veterans too long).

But to then do an about face and to make a move on Sam??? Mitchell is not the player that should be squeezed out out of those 4.
Roughead could have been delisted and still got his contract paid out outside of the cap via insurance. Classic case of loss of income due to illness.

I am completely fine with the club taking this approach and giving him every opportunity to come back but it is a huge struggle and all we really need from him is his health.

Let me make it clear. If the Hawks delisted Roughead to save money on the cap, I would cancel my membership immediately.

This Sam Mitchell business isn't as bad, but its up there.

Then read what people have said. There's plenty of sense to be made.

Yes, I have read every post and am yet to be convinced as to the merit of this decision. Maybe you should read some of the ones that say it makes no sense and you'll understand why.

If you think this was done for Sam's benefit you are in la la land, he said it himself he was blindsided by the suggestion. Sam playing out his last year at Hawthorn would be no hindrance to his post playing life. It was done to benefit Hawthorn although quite how I cannot see.
Sam had obviously let Clarko know about the previous discussions with Simmo. Sam gets to move at a time that facilitates some continuity with the kids schooling.

We lose Sam a year earlier to facilitate the gaining of a midfield core for the next 10 years. Short term pain for a longer term gain.

That clown is wrong anyway, he will be our 4th Brownlow medallist

Mitchell would be your fifth Brownlow Medallist.

Col Austin (retrospective)
Robert DiPierdomineco (1986)
John Platten (1987)
Shane Crawford (1999)

Sam Mitchell (2012) (?)

It's how I see it too

Bumps, I think this was done at a mates level and with Clarko knowing its better to stagger our retirees and our need
to regenerate our list now. I wish it was Lewis or Shiels but circumstances favoured Mitch. We land JOM and with T MITCH
our midfield is already better than previous years. We will be a better side next year and thats what I'm excited about.

If the bloke you were responding to was a Hawks fan, you'd be right ;)

I believe he's implying Mitch will win the 2017 Brownlow
