Can someone give this tool a day off, and remove that abomination of an image - we'll be seeing enough of it next year as it is. If you can't understand what "no opposition supporters" means you shouldn't be allowed to post. Right now that is just a like magnet for opposition fan flogs.

This is an absolute disgrace.

I don't care how touchy feely the club tries to make it. They keep saying it's good for the club. How could it possibly be good? No one from the club has come out and said why they got rid of him. If it's for salary cap reasons say so. But also tells us how they got into this mess in the first place.

It is a kick in the guts that one of our ALL TIME GREATS can be discarded for sweet FA. It would almost be palatable if we got something in return for what he has given the club and what his talent demands. It would almost be palatable if he was in decline. It would almost be palatable if we had some potential gun midfielders ready to step up. What we got for him from the Eagles is embarrassing and a total lack of respect for the player he is.

What is even more disgraceful is the total lack of communication from the club. They're happy to boast about how many members they have, but show these members a total lack of regard in situations like this.

This in NOT what good clubs do. You can talk all you like about what they do in US sports, but they also know how to look after their champions. The LA Lakers gave Kobe Bryant a two year deal worth an absolute truck load when he should have retired. They knew he was past it and the team struggled. But they knew they owed it to him to be a one club player for all the success and joy he had given them. His farewell game was one of the greatest sporting events of the year and his fans got to farewell him and thank him. We will never get this chance with Sam Mitchell.

Apologies, didn't see the No Opposition tag. Mods, feel free to delete.

if it gets us rockliff this year with fyfe and trengove as FA's next year I wont complain. have to wait 12 months anyway to found out, at which point I'll have moved on

Will they sign on before or after we offer a three year contract to the Tooth Fairy?

I'm with you on this....100% correct...you will get the "but the club is bigger than individual" weak posts, but that means NOTHING when it comes to players like Sam Mitchell...especially when bringing in a Richmond dud, on big $$$, and a kid that hasn't played in two years...yes tom Mitchell is a great get, but so what..he replaces the team's best player from last year, who happens to be a legend of the club and would have been their best player next year...throw in the Jordan lewis situation and anyone that thinks things are going well are dreaming!!

Although I share your confusion and sadness, no one is bigger than the club.

We support Hawthorn, remember this....

Yes Sam Mitchell is going and the culture is changing (not getting better or worse just changing), its time to build a new culture, a new era and a new set of flags..... Lets build another group of champions around Shiels (Should be captain IMO), JOM, Lovell, Stewart, TOM et al.... this is not doom and gloom.... this will be looked back on as pure genius imo but right now is a time to remember the sacrifice Mitchell has given up for this club, a true legend of this club......

Thankyou for the great memories Sammy..... always welcome at Hawthorn as far as I'm concerned...

I'm absolutely ecstatic. Couldn't believe we got Mitchell for 88 (basically).

If I were you boys I'd be dirty.

Just remember the lessons you have enjoyed receiving when it matters since 1991. You loved being punished in 91 and 2015 didn't you.? F off now

I thought this trade wasn't going to go through unless we could work out a deal. Pick 88 is not a deal, we have given him away, therefore the trade should not have happened. Again, I would like to know what the heck is going on?

I can see why etc. and obviously it hopefully all works out fine as the club see's the plan. Good for Sam's long term future as well. All in all, well handled so far.

However if anymore guy/s are moved on and we actually happen to get O'Meara and he turns out to be a busted unit and plays 6 games in two seasons or something then I would have rathered kept the old guys and been able to send them off as Hawks and put Sam on our coaching staff.

Either way it's going to be an interesting trade period to review down the line.

Email from Sammy:

Firstly, I wanted to say thank you. It has been a honour to play for the brown and gold over the last 15 years and I appreciate all the support and opportunities that I have had throughout my time at the Hawks.

There are too many people to thank, and if I mentioned all the individuals this would turn into an essay, so to the players, coaches, medical and conditioning staff and everyone who has been with me over the journey - thank you. Okay maybe just a few individuals as well. Crawf, Vanders, Hodgey and Roughy – thank you for your ongoing support and friendship.

For most of you the news on Wednesday would have come as a shock, but hopefully you can understand the logic of this decision.

At 34, with a young family and perhaps my best footy behind me, this all makes sense and it opens doors in terms of my next dream to be a coach. Some of you will be angry and think the club and I have made a big mistake which I understand but emotion aside this is the right decision for myself and the football club.

My family is the most important part of my life; a new beginning excites us all, Lyndall, Smith, Emmerson and Scarlett.

The Hawthorn Football Club has treated me and my little clan with nothing but respect and as part of their extended family. Other than another premiership, I could not have asked for a better way for my time at Hawthorn to end.

As for me, the thought of pulling on a new jumper, while still a little strange, is a great opportunity and has reinvigorated me for a new challenge.

As a kid I dreamt of playing at the MCG, playing in premierships and running through banners. However, making it to 300 games, with the same club, is something not even kids would dream of, let alone playing in four premierships.

I feel so fortunate and grateful for the last 15 years of memories.

To all of you, thank you for watching, cheering and supporting me over the journey. Thank you for all the good times and I even thank you for booing all the bad times; because every emotion that you have put into the Hawthorn Football Club has affected me and has made me want to achieve more and more.

I have loved it all and will always have brown and gold in my blood.

Yours sincerely,

Sam Mitchell

Fairly angry right about now. None of the supposed reasons why we have discarded Sam make sense to me...

Free up Salary cap room? - Surely cutting 3-4 mid range players, who may never make AFL grade, would be far beneficial?
Coaching Career for Sam? - Fantastic for Sam, no doubt. However, a player like that would have had coaching offers from clubs left right and centre once he had finished his playing days
Picks for possible trades? - 52, 70 and 88 ain't getting us shit... Both in trades and at the draft

If we don't get both O'Meara and Mitchell then we will be the biggest losers of the trade period in a long, long time.

I just don't understand this at all. There is never only one way to get something you really want

I thought this trade wasn't going to go through unless we could work out a deal. Pick 88 is not a deal, we have given him away, therefore the trade should not have happened. Again, I would like to know what the heck is going on?

The only way I can make sense of it is that Sam really did want to go, and was not actually being pushed for cap space. Wright did claim we could do the TOM and JOM deals without Sam going, so unless the club officials are outright lying to us, this all happened because Sam wanted it to happen. Hopefully it allows us some flexibility on front ending for next years contracts and more refreshing next year. Still feeling a little itchy in my pitchfork hand, but trying to see the positives for both Sam and the club. Definitely feeling a lot flatter than when we sent Croad west.

People may liken this to the moves Clarko made when he first arrived at the club to move on the veterans but this is nothing like it. Back then we DRAFTED youth in we didn't trade them in, this all feels sort of soulless to me

The difference is players like Thompson and Hay never did anything for this club except raise expectations and then bitterly disappoint.
