Not as bad as Judas wearing red and white. At least Sammy will only be doing this for a year.

I don't agree, Bud wanted to go yes it was a bugger the manner in which he went and who he went to, but Mitch would not have gone had it not been for Clarko so that to me hurts more. Especially since he looks in great touch, I will get used to it over the season, and know that Clarko has always been a maverick, so his eyes are on the long game. Lewis I get Mitch not so much, but that's footy.

Mitchell will play for one year, two at most. Judas has already played 3 elsewhere. Mitchell made sense leaving, went with our blessing and will possibly come back to coach at some stage. Judas left, planned it right after we lost a grand final to the club he was in bed with, got his manager to structure a deal to **** us over and restrict our ability to do a trade all to benefit his new club with no regard for HFC despite all his protests of how much he 'loved' the club.

Sam leaving is hard to take, but he leaves with absolutely none of the malice and he'll only go against us for one season, two maximum.

Sammy looks great in the pre-season, but will struggle to run out the year. His departure was difficult, he will play some good games (just hopefully not against us), but his time with us was done. Clarko is just orchestrating what he's done for Cam Bruce, although I suspect WCE will get a little more out of Sammy than 10 mediocre games.

Agree. In addition, it has been mentioned that he was one of our veterans that was an injury away from retirement. Wish the little champ well but right direction for the Hawks as a club and as it turned out will be good for Sam to get additional 'retirement fund' from WC.

We lost Lewis because Mitch convinced the senior team to take a pay cut then buggered off.

Still a legend of the club in my eyes, just unfortunate how it played out.

Thats not my reading. Hawks lost Lewis because Clarko only offered 1 year and no security past that and Melbourne offered 3 years and $1.8m. Pretty easy decision.

I think it might have been part hissy fit as well - I would not be surprised if Clarko's little chat indicated that Lewis would not be getting the captaincy. A few people close to the industry have told me Lewis is not captain material.

In the pre-match to tonights game we got to see some end of ground footage of Sam allowing his opponent goal side against the Tigers last week a few times and being burnt really badly.

It's stuff like that Wayne Carey was trying to imply a couple of years ago when he said his defensive side would see him not get a game anywhere else.......yeah, he botched that up bad.

But he has a point.

Mitchell has always been a slow little fella when it comes to covering 30-40 metres, and as the game has gotten quicker his ability to play the angles and cut down the space has slowly left his side.

Now, opposition players burn him with ease when the ball changes possession, and that footage tonight was pretty damning.

No wonder Eagles fans have been discussing if they can play both Priddis and Mitchell in the same side.

If they didn't have Priddis he'd be in a better balanced midfield but then they'd need him to go in and get it more

They will benefit from having him in either way but hopefully people on here can start moving on a little from thinking he'd be the answer for us this year

No doubt Sam will make a great coach. Still astounds me how well he reads the game around him and just his general football intelligence

Still got it. Some of the things he did tonight :$ :$ :$. F*** Vickery.

Injury aside, I thought he was poor tonight.
I think by Round 15 onwards, few will be mocking the trade and seeing we got it right. But it still hurts.
Hope he doesn't miss next week, really looking forward to celebrating our 2012 Brownlow medalist and hope the club do something classy to say thanks properly to him. Hope the crowd cheer every possession, I know I will be.

Saks been having some good personal years recently. But I still look back favourably on the Sewell Mitchell partnership

You'll probably find swapping a brownlow-medallist, four-time premiership playing rising-star award-winning 5-times PCM winning midfielder for pick 88 will result in the mocking of people who think we got it right regardless of how he does this season. The input he might have had to our current midfield would have been enormous. Instead that is going to West Coast's midfield for their future. All for pick 88.

I didnt think he was great either and had long patches without possession which is unusual for him. Eagles seem to be wanting him to sit behind the stoppage as insurance rather than in the stoppage. I tend to think by seasons end and more than likely sooner he will be viewed as done. Hasnt lost his ball use but looking more and more like a liability defensively.

That's the thing though, we need games into the kids because we are in a rebuild. Malthouse's article as much as it pains me to say was spot on.
Mitchell is now clogging the spot of someone at West Coast and they'll feel obliged to play him regardless of form.
If he stayed at Hawthorn, he takes Howe or Langford's spot and we potentially make a call on them without giving them more than a game here or there.
Unless West Coast salute, apart from Hawthorn IP, the Mitchell trade (on field) will be a failure.
Now, after he retires and is coaching their midfield, he'll be worth his wait in gold.
We made the right call, it was just handled poor. Similar in that sense to Boomer Harvey.
Mitchell was part of a midfield that went from Top, to straight set exit. Both him and Lewis can't shy away from that fact.
Pick 88 was a token to appease the AFL. If Clarko could've, it would've just been a free transfer to look after a loyal servant of the club.

No you don't understand what I mean. If he stays at hawthorn, he doesn't have to play to have an effect on our midfield. His input is intellectual. Having a spot on the list for him, and he plays one in every five games, would have been a massive benefit to TMitch, Omeara, etc etc. in training etc. All for pick 88.

I understand that, but do you really believe someone as competitive as Sammy will be willing to just play 5-10 a season?
I agree it would've been nice to keep him, but you don't manage someone like Sam Mitchell unless its a Crawf situation and you're trying to nurse him to one last shot at glory. Sam will return to Hawthorn, it just wont be for 4-5 years.
