2nd game back after missing 2 months, BOG for me, took some real heavy knocks but stood up.
Sammy Mitchell you are a superstar mate !! Quite possibly the most under rated champion of the game.
So much is talked about Pendles, Swan, Watson, Dangerfield, Gablett, etc ... Yet Sam Mitchell is rarely mentioned. It really is an injustice.
Just does it week in week out with " EFFECTIVE " possessions and influences games to win games.
So glad he plays for the Hawks !

Great post, and great to have him back!

He is underrated by the idiots out there.
But not by Hawk supporters.

:thumbsu:

A bit like Michael Tuck, or even Shane Crawford, where he's too much of a team player, and happy to sacrifice his own game for the team to succeed

I jumped on the train when he was at box hill, and was laughed at when I said he'd be an AFL star
In fact, I get laughed at a fair bit for my opinions, but have a great track record

Anywho...

Sam's lack of recognition is due to the fact that he plays in a champion team. All the others the OP mentioned play in a team full of lesser-lights (I was going to say spuds, but GC has a lot of future champions), so they stand out. I mean, who takes the limelight off Pendles and Swan. Or Watson?

But I agree, very strange to see Sam's 28 disposals as 85% DE (and often higher) against Dangerman's 41 at 68% and not get any recognition. Teams put a tag on Mitch but we would rather let Swan roam free and get the ball knowing we will get it back in space straight away. Ablett is a great player, but 20% of his possessions are the old 1-2, another 20% travel 10m.

Well, let them all keep on under-estimating him.

same dude, loved how he played at Box Hill, you could tell even in his first few games for the Hawks he was a star

i used to get so annoyed at Schwabby for benching him, like he did for most younger players

I'm not looking forward to footy life without him.
Agree 1 million %. He gives the ball to his teammates on an absolute platter. Ridiculous what he does with the ball.

What about some of his tackling last night!!!

Brownlow lock!

Absolutely. And could almost say the same for Sewell. And Hodge.

Right now I just can't see who the next rung of players will be to cover these positions to the same effect. The tough bustling ball extractor type player where speed isn't everything.

Is it Jed? Hartung? Langford? Who else ? All still young and need to take next step and soon. Whoever it is let's hope they can be half as good as these guys. The heart of the team.

he'll finish at a minimum 2x Premiership player, Premiership Captain, All Australian and when Jobe goes down as the drug cheat he is at least a moral Brownlow medalist. Dont care what any one says he's a champ of the game

We have some great players but Sammy is the best. Sooo good. Some of those quick handballs in congestion were sensational. He won't like being tackled by Danger though!

I still love Hodge btw - but I love Sammy more. Sorry Hodgey!!

Yeah, its like he's barely missed a beat, which for a 30+yr old after 8 weeks off is amazing. Guy is a genius with the ball, and as unselfish a player as there is in the game. How this guy is not rated amongst the best players in the comp is absolutely f#$ken criminal.

Doesnt get looked after by the umpires at all

Some of the treatment he copped last night was just plain unfair. Even on TV you could watch Sloane and others holding him out of the contest and no free. This was happening straight in front of the umpires as well. Must be frustrating for him.

So many instances last night - from the whack he copped in the adams apple (and then penalised for incorrect disposal!) to some serious holding off the ball. Hard not to be pissed off but good old Sammy just keeps on going.

Me neither. But I use the same physio as the one many of the Hawks used for years, and he's not as pessimistic as me about how long Mitch can hold up. Says his preparation is meticulous, and his relative late-start in the big leagues will help his durability. Was less optimistic about Hodgey though.

I'm not so sure he's underrated. Hawthorn people regard him as one of the greats this club has seen and would push to be selected in any Hawthorn team of any era. Arguably still our most valuable and best player. Opposition coaches certainly would have him marked as a danger player every week and would be first selected every week.

Agree, best on ground again last night and wouldn't expect any less from Sam after a couple of games back. Star!

I hate picking one of Sam or Hodge as it like choosing your favourite child.....but jeez, Sam 's ability to find a colleague in the most congested of areas with a pass that has the right weight is the best I've ever seen. The lack of recognition and acknowledgement by the "know alls" is almost recognition in itself. It is as though to mention him is too easy and so they out do each other trying to find alternatives to champion. Deep down, they all know he is a pure champion.

Copped a wack to the throat went down looked like he couldn't breath had to go off for a few minutes and get checked out
No 4 week suspension for the perpetrator not even a free kick for head high.

We did learn though that when someone actually attacks your throat with force it hurts and it takes a fair while to recover, the MRP should take note.

Where was Dr "i have no clue" Larkins telling everyone Sam Mitchell could've died from a strike to the throat?..........me smells a conspiracy
