Dash and daring is wonderful but it must be tempered with match awareness. I love his attitude and capabilities, he just needs to mature a bit and learn when to take them on and to settle an instant before delivering the pill.

That said he has the raw talent and is young in terms of games, he has a good chance of developing with growing maturity and becoming a great find.

How has his VFL form been haven't really checked?

Not much wiser myself. Seems to be getting little bit of the footy, say disposals in the low twenties, but by all reports his kicking has continued to be a little bit wayward.

I just think if we want him to play AFL we might need to get him in against a lesser opponent and try and let him build against Carlton and GCS. If he's not in this week then I suspect he's not part of our plans for this year, unless desperately needed.

I would like to see him come in this week for Wells, and given a run on the wing... we have some real speed in the midfield now and I think he can really add to that, with the instructions to run and kick long..
Remembering he was picked up by the swans as a forward he also could add to our multi pronged goal scoring forward set up

I watched one game and his kicking was atrocious, needs to work on it. Bit surprised because I didn’t think it was that bad at AFL level

Have they closed his space down in VFL? or is he able to cleanly break the lines when delivering? I noticed when he had time his kicking is good but when he was closed in (due to either running into trouble or them keeping close check on him) it come undone.

He was in line to be de-listed as a forward they moved him back for a reason, as a FP he was largely missing.

The wing idea however has merit, would need to test it at VFL level first.

Bucks was asked why Murray has been dropped in the post-match last night, and I've cut and pasted those comments from the post of PonsfordMagpie

"A little bit of that (kicking efficiency). A little bit of contest. He's a good young player. He's just played the first nine games of his AFL career and he's done pretty well. He had a little bit of a lull, so he goes back and we'll see if he can get his form up and play some good footy in the VFL and give himself a chance to come back in and contribute later in the year".

From this it might be wondered whether Murray can expect an extended run at VFL, and it might also be wondered what sort of improvement in his game (beyond disposal) they hope to see. Defensive accountability might be an issue, but one that I'm sure he can improve with the right attitude.
Run faster and take 1 less step between bounces.

Most of the time he was under pressure, Pies lost the game (think it was vs Melbourne’s vfl team) he completely cooked a kick out though

It'll just depend on form and injuries. His form hasn't warranted a recall because he keeps turning it over. And we have a pretty fit list in defence. If his form improves or we get injuries to small defenders I reckon he'll be looked at regardless of opponent.

Sam Murray. An unlikely forward option?

I feel the need, the need for speed.

Call me a maverick or if you wish just a goose but I believe Murray should replace Wells this week and play in a new role as a defensive forward.

My thinking is with the silk of Wells gone for the year, the class of Elliott still on the sidelines, the talent of Fasolo unavailable, Varcoe as injury prone as anyone and young Daicos still a preseason away at least from having the physicality to be a consistent senior performer then Murray represents the best value to the side of those who remain because of his one clear elite physical advantage of leg speed.

I think we were all enamored by the early season form of Murray and enthralled by his willingness to take the game on and burst away from opponents.

His form in his role across half back might have wavered but his manic approach didn't and with a Collingwood side already troubling teams with it's outside run and spread adding another genuinely quick player to the 22 is a tantalising prospect to me.

Now people might say Murray doesn't have the experience as a forward but if we keep it simple in the beginning and just give him a role on the oppositions best creative half back or with the instruction that his primary purpose is to harass and tackle inside our forward 50 then I believe we have a starting point he's more than capable of fulfilling.

We should also factor in how the game is currently being played and how the last 2 premiership sides have been successful in putting together forward mixes incorporating non specialists with resting midfielders or role players with a team first mentality capable of creating turnovers the choice made.

We are starting to replicate this ourselves and with our improved transition ability we are also seeing our players able to find space leading back to the goal more frequently and it's hard not to think that Murray with his speed and useful height of 187cm couldn't prove a handful for the opposition in this circumstance either.

AFL coaches aren't often bold when it comes to drastic positional changes but with our defensive mix currently performing well and gelling I'd like Buckley to be bold, give Murray another opportunity but this time as a forward.

You do know that Murray was on the verge of being delisted after failing as a small forward at Sydney, right?

Happy to never say never about playing people in different positions.

Happy to not use the cliche of "he was almost delisted last time he played there".

Happy to trial Murray forward.

BUT:

He should be trialled forward in the VFL. We have kicked 40 goals in the past two weeks in the seniors...........why would we stuff around with that?

Murray started very well but then dropped off. His other big block is the emergence of Crisp as a guenuine line braking HB which is what we were lacking and what Murray was recruited to become. Especially in the last 5 rounds Crisp has stepped it up and is putting up elite figures. Our need for what Murray brings had reduced so he gets to work in the VFL at getting another chance.

Sam will be back.

I think we forget he’s a newbie and young type.
Sometimes he might appear as like 24 to some.

But he’s very new.

Will learn,
Will get better,
We’ll remain super fast

This.

He showed his abilities in the first few rounds - but his inconsistence shown through afterwards which was not unexpected.

We need to think of him as close to a 1st year player - thats effectively what he is.
Give him time and he will back as a running HBF (maybe wing - but probably behind a few other options there)... i dont see him working up forward.
