His overall first class stats are OK, an average of just below 40 with 6 hundreds at the age of 23. But this season he has really flourished, with a 129 against Surrey followed up by an unbeaten double hundred in his current fixture.

As yet, most Australian cricket lovers have not woken up to quite what a gem they have let slip through their fingers. They will, though. He has already scored more runs this year than Phil Hughes managed in 17 Championship innings for Worcestershire last year and looks, in these conditions, a far more solid batsman.

has played 47 fc matches & with an average of just under 40, after scoring s few runs in county cricket, why is he anything special

As a teenager was given a choice of a rookie contract on peanuts for NSW or a full contract for Middlesex living in London. Pretty easy choice if you ask me. Murders grade cricket in Sydney when he comes back every summer.

Notwithstanding, if he continues on his merry way this season and a call comes through to open the innings for Australia in the first test.. that's a pretty big carrot to turn down. Never know unless you ask

Is a very very good player. It's a shame we haven't convined him to come back and play FC in Australia but he comes back every season and usually plays a full one for Easts in Sydney Grade Cricket, and does very well averaging high 40's.

the choice to take the full middlesex contract was a pretty easy one at the time. but that doesn't necessarily mean he has committed to england over australia, although it sounds like he is loving it there.

given his performance in sydney grade and england, it is concerning that he hasn't been given a crack for nsw. seems to suggest he is not interested. those concerns are multiplied when you consider his old man holds a bit of sway within cricket nsw.

given some of the batsmen we have trotted out for australia lately, he wouldn't be the worst. it would be an extremely unique situation if it were too happen, although doubtful during the upcoming ashes, although they could always add to the squad.

If he declares his hand and says he wants to play for Australia - goodbye County Cricket and contract. He just wants to a make it - doesn't care where.

He can't play for NSW as an overseas player because he was born in Australia. And it's pretty obvious which country a 21-22yo (as he was, when he signed his current Middlesex deal) cricketer who is fighting for a career should play in as a local (Hint: It's the one with 16 teams, not the one with 6)

Worth listening to the podcast of Jim Robson on the SEN website when it comes up later. Very down to earth. Just highlights how long it takes to make it in the system. He's in no rush to have to make a decision either way and all of the speculation has come with a bit of a rush.

I'm not sure if it's a 'rule' anymore (it certainly used to be) - if you want to be picked for Ausdtralia, you have to make yourself available for the Sheffield Shield and play in it.

Not sure if that affects this situation or not.

He's born in Australia, UK Mum, Dad played seconds for Worcester for a season in addition to having a long career for UNSW. Dad is/as a NSW Selector and runs the Indoor Centre at the SCG. Plays for Eastern Suburbs in Sydney Grade comp, debuted as a 16 year old leg spinner who could bat, but started off down the list and gradually worked his way up.

Not a T20 Player

Went to the UK as an 18 year old to play club cricket, tried to get trials at several counties, got one at Middlesex - went ok and started playing seconds. Has improved year on year and has started off this year in scintillating form - hence the interest.

Averaged low 40's for Eastern Suburbs this year.

Wants to be a professional cricketer, plays as an Englishmen due to mother, if he plays Sheffied Shield he can only play as a local because he was born here. If he plays Sheffield Shield, immediately he cannot play for Middlesex as a local.

Knows if things keep going the way they are he will have to make a call, but it's come a lot quicker than they expected.

It will be interesting, from the drift of that convo with his Dad, I get the feeling he is leaning towards the ECB.

He's clearly built a life in London in the last 5 years, even if he is offered a SS contract, he will basically lose his Middlesex contract and give up his home etc, as his Dad said, he's not a T20 player, so has to do whats best for himself long term. I found it pretty interesting that he was county capped this year, thats a pretty big deal for a 22/23 year old, the ECB clearly rate him.

Unless CA come to the party and offer him a full contract I get the feeling when he qualifies for citizenship next year, he will nominate England.

I can't see CA offering a contract for him, despite his success' in CC, if he doesn't have a proven track record in SS, if he plays as a home player in SS, he gives up his Middlesex.

It's hard to say because on performance he's probably in the top 5 u/23 Australian born bastmen atm.

If he chooses England, he better be prepared for a life of hate from his own country though, not an easy decision, and the Australian public won't go easy on him, especially if he plays in an Australian home Ashes series in a few years.

It's up to Invers and co, they are taking the piss though if they don't get him in for some net practice during the Ashes though, if only to get a close up look at him.

Committed to Australian cricket?

He'd probably still be in NSW's 2nd XI if he didn't take his own development into his own hands.

He roughed it out, slept on floors in London, got mates to get him trials, and he's forged himself into an international cricketer because of it.

He should be commended, and he deserves to make his own decision because of it.

FWIW, if we had a 23 year old opening batsman in the SS, that smashed over 500 runs in about 3 games in the season just gone, he'd be in the Ashes squad................

The Australian system is flawed against this type of player (Not T20, slow developer), good luck to him for chasing his dream and possibly making a go of it. I can't knock him for it.

It's obviously been borne out of our desperation for young talented batmen, and he's only at the beginning of his career. In saying that, if he keeps scoring runs over the next few seasons we'd be stupid not to try and get him back playing in the Australian system.

Although obviously he'd be well within his rights to stay over there.
