Past Sam Sheldon (2007-2012)

How well he polls tonight will be a strong indicator of just how well he played this year. Or how much he is vossy's pet. ;)

Q: You talked about exposing more players and giving them opportunities, did any players surprise you this season and perform above what you might have initially thought they were capable of?
A: I thought Sam Sheldon was really good. ... And Sam Sheldon, with the year he had the year before, he had no confidence whatsoever, but then slowly over the pre-season he regained that and he had an impact on our season.

Sammy came on this year and played 16 games. He’s a guy that put pressure on in the forward line which is really important in the modern game. He keeps his feet and is starting to kick a few goals, so he’s just got to keep with his development and get stronger.

The glass is half full

Few players divide the supporter base like Sam Sheldon, with very few sitting on the sidelines. Whilst much maligned by a certain Melbourne radio station :D, Sam’s year has been a pretty good one with plenty of development. After an injury and illness plagued few years Sheldon completed his first full pre season and impressed the new HP manager Brett Burton with his efforts.

His first game in the seniors came in round 8 against the Bombers with a reasonable defensive display. Sam showed that he is capable of being an AFL player in round 9 against North where in difficult conditions he showed good intensity for the ball and a clean pair of hands. After a few quieter games Sheldon had one of his best games against Port kicking 2 goals and laying 7 tackles in his new forward pocket role. His best game for the year came in the second Q clash where he had a season high 16 disposals and kicked 2 goals.

Sheldon ended up playing 16 games this year (13 players played more games and two players played the same). With this in mind it is interesting to have a look at where he finished in some stats against his team mates. Tackles – 11th, goals – 12th, goal assists – 13th, contested possessions – 15th, disposals – 15th, and marks – 16th.

All in all a good result and these figures must concern anybody who has made a statement about how many games (or lack thereof) Sam will play for the Lions. Sheldon still needs to work on a number of things however his kicking penetration has improved as has his defensive pressure. I look forward to Sam’s continual improvement next year with the extra benefit of seeing the Number 3 out there on the paddock.

Brisbane Lions sanction Sam Sheldon and Pearce Hanley

TWO Brisbane Lions players have been sanctioned by the club after a brush with the law on Friday night. Sam Sheldon and Pearce Hanley were charged with being a public nuisance in Brisbane. The Lions have fined both players, who they said were remorseful for their actions. The pair could face further penalties from the leadership group.''As a Club, we have high expectations when it comes to our culture and the behavioural standards of our players,'' football manager Dean Warren said.
''While this incident was certainly out of character for both Sam and Pearce, both are fully aware of their obligations as Brisbane Lions players, which is why we have taken this action. Sam and Pearce accept and understand they made a poor decision on the night.''

The Brisbane Lions AFC has tonight sanctioned two of its players after they were charged with public nuisance by Queensland Police in Brisbane CBD on Friday night.

Sam Sheldon and Pearce Hanley have been handed financial sanctions for failing to meet the standards and expectations set by the Club when they failed to obey a police direction.

The sanctions were recommended by the Club’s Standards Committee at a meeting this evening that was also attended by both players.

Sheldon and Hanley, who are currently on annual leave, will also face further internal sanctions when the Senior Leadership group returns for pre-season training in early November.

Comment From Brendan
G'day Ash, big fan of yours. Which lions player has most impressed you this pre-season?

Hi Brendan, little Sammy Sheldon, had a bit of a hiccup at the start but he is absolutely flying now and Micth Golby.

Voss seems to be a Sheldon fan, but his pre-season form has been terrible. With players like Polec and Beams knocking down the door, as well as Zorko before he was injured, he needed to keep progressing to keep his spot, but it looks like he's gone backwards. Played himself out of the starting 22 IMO.

Round 2

The Lions have made just one change, with Jess O'Brien coming in for Sam Sheldon, who was omitted. Sheldon started as the substitute against Melbourne last week, but did not do enough to impress Lions coach Michael Voss, despite picking up five touches and kicking a goal in the last quarter.

NEAFL Round 3 vs UWS Giants

“Sammy Sheldon also came back to the Reserves on the weekend and played in the midfield. He is another guy who probably has a good chance of going back up and playing with the senior team.”

It's interesting that after playing one quarter as the sub in round 1, Sheldon gets dropped. Then, rather than being first in line to get a recall, there are five changes in round 2, but Sheldon still doesn't get a recall.

With a few players coming back from injury, and some good form from the fringe players in the reserves, all of a sudden Sheldon looks to be facing a tough battle to get back into the team.

Just not enough strings to his bow at AFL level to keep a spot. He is good as a defensive forward, but can't do much else at that level. With players like Beams, Harwood, Golby, Polec taking spots in the 22 this year that weren't around last year, he will find it a lot harder to break into the team.

I've always had time for Sheldon, he does his role in the team, but perhaps like Stiller, is probably one of those players that will get over taken in the next 12-24 months if they can't improve their game.

Footy Barometer

ON THE BLOCK: Young Lion Sam Sheldon could find himself back on the outer after a less than inspiring performance in the Q-Clash. Sheldon was subbed off in the final term of the cross-town clash with the Suns with just 14 touches at 57 per cent efficiency. He was a late inclusion for James Polkinghorne.

Heh "just" 14 touches for Sheldon. That's massive! :D
In 16 games last year, Sheldon exceeded 14 touches only twice. His career best game was 19 touches in 2009. I think it is mightily harsh for the Hun to have Sheldon on the chopping block after a game which is near career best!

That said he is probably still at the top of the chopping block list regardless of how many touches he got. I thought he was the least hurtful player for the lions although I was genuinely impressed with his attack on the ball. Still I think there are players in the reserves who will overtake him. Sorry Sheldon!

The real problem he seems to suffer from is indecision, leading to rushed possession. He did a couple of great things the other night that ended up looking terrible because he held onto it way too long. When he does see good options & attempts to use them he tends to over compensate & put the footy way too far out in front. A bit of that might be down to the speed difference between NEAFL & AFL footy. He's facing an uphill battle.

There was some talk of the Saints being interested in him last year I think. Is there even the slightest possibility he might get a second chance?

I don't think he has any chance of getting picked up by another club. IMO he has never shown enough for me to think he has what it takes to make it as an AFL player.
