Past Sam Sheldon (2007-2012)

Of course, he had the dreaded OP which can have a very detrimental effect on kicking power, followed by glandular fever, so he's had some serious setbacks. He may still be building up his confidence with his kicking and his stamina will improve. I'd like to see us persevere with him for a few more games at least.

This is what i was saying before, the kid had a very bad run with injuries early on, and not just the typical soft tissue type stuff, OP and Glandular fever ain't pretty. I would really love to flash forward 2 years, and about 30 more senior games to see how he has come along. I think people under estimate how good it is for young developing players to have some continuity to their footy. When they can put together a couple of injury free seasons of footy, with some good preseason inbetween, that's when players have a break out year. I think Sheldon will be one to watch in the next 2-3 years, even though he isn't setting the world on fire right now.

The osteitis-pubis stuff was a few years ago now, wasn't it? I'm not sure that glandular fever would affect someone's kicking either. To me, it looks simply like an area of deficiency - I'm unsure if it's something that can be worked on or not.

He is playing his 4th Season. IIRC the first season was curtailed with a broken leg, the 2nd with OP and prior to the 3rd he got Glandular Fever. Happy to be corrected on all that but if so, to me he is really a 2nd year player all things considered.

I like the fact he had the courage to take his chances with us via the draft and shows independent thought.

He looks not much different in length of kick than Luke to me. Like all young players he probably needs to learn his limitations when kicking but with experience that may come.
I like the fact he is fearless at the ball and the man and also seems to get into position as well. I never took much notice of his handball until under extreme pressure he stuck a ripper on the chest of a running player directly in front me one game last season.

Time as usual will tell but at this point in time I am happy to see us stick with him.

That's exactly it John, he came to us younger than most, and spent the first 2 years doing nothing basically. Those kind of injuries and illness stop you from playing, and stop you from training. By the time he was over all that, he would have barely changed. So yeah, that's why for me, Sheldon is a 2nd year player this year. And if he was someone we drafted in 08, you would be pretty happy with his progress so far.

Another thing i love about Sheldon is that he idolizes Vossy, and didn't blink and eyelid with asking for #3 when he arrived at the club as a 17 year old.

Sam Sheldon's Statistics against Richmond:

4 Kicks 7 Handballs

Virtually no impact on the game.

Seeing what it will take for him to be dropped has become a perverse sort of game.
It's like the Statistics Limbo ... how low can he go ... before he is gets a spell in the twos and some other young kid gets a chance?

Wasn't he tagging Cotchin? He completely shut him down in the second half.

Look here you, don't you go bringing common sense to this here witch hunt!

Round 13 MRP

Sam Sheldon, Brisbane Lions, has been charged with a First Offence for engaging in a melee at half time of the Round 13 match between the Brisbane Lions and Richmond, played at the Gabba, on Saturday June 19, 2010.

In summary, he can accept a $1200 sanction with an early plea.

A first offence for engaging in a melee is a $1600 sanction. An early plea reduces the penalty by 25 per cent to a $1200 sanction.

I don't understand why this kid is in the AFL. He is Ken Sheldon's son and that's it. He can't play at this level. He looks out of place. The AFL is for men and he looks like someone who is still at primary school. Surely there's someone in the reserves that he is harder on the ball than him and has a better disposal than him.

He was tagging Murphy tonight and he did limit his impact. Sam has a hell of a lot of work to do to become an AFL player. Still would like to see what he can achieve after a full pre season.

I just don't see that Sheldon has what it takes, to be honest. Even his defensive game is lacking, because he simply lets his opponent get goal-side of him far too often and is hurt as a result. He doesn't have chase-down pace nor enough physical strength to stop from being worked out of position. Combine this with his lack of ability to play an attacking game with the football in his hands and I just can't see a continued role for him. I don't know if another pre-season is going to help much.

To me, Sheldon looks like one of those guys who could really become a very good player at the next level down, but will always struggle at AFL level.

Face it, Acuguy, even Selwood (who also had injury issues early on) was able to come in and completely shut down quality opponents as a tagger in his early days. Selwood is finished and Sheldon has shown less than him at the same stage.

He did a great job on Murphy. Murphy has zero influence on the game.

As I posted in another thread, Sheldon didn't appear to have Murphy for the entire game and I'd also suggest that Murphy's lackluster disposal was more of his issue than being "shut down". When Murphy did get it right it seemed to result in goals to Carlton.

I thought I saw him on Garlett (?) at one point, as well as Simpson on occasion. A bit hard to pick up match-ups on TV though.

Pretty sure he started on Garlett. Obviously it's going to be a tough match-up because Garlett is a lot faster, but I think it's still fair enough to expect that you won't get worked under the ball or allow your opponent to get goal-side (particularly considering that Garlett is no muscle-man, despite his pace).

Can't remember who Sheldon went to next - someone suggested it was Scotland (who I thought was good). Sheldon seemed to have Murphy for most of the second half. To give him credit, he did try to go the distance with him, but I just think he isn't really all that well-skilled at a complete shut-down role.

Well said.

Is Sheldon out of contract? If so, I think that he is a fairly obvious candidate for delisting.
In order to clean our list up, we need to offer players like Sheldon, who have been given every chance to prove they are up to AFL standard and not measured up, an opportunity to continue their football careers elsewhere.

I would be against getting rid of too many players too quickly. Sheldon might be a player that does well under a differ fitness plan as well. We should accommodate anyone looking to leave, but this isn't the year to get rid of those 50/50 players.
