I don't think it'd be as catastrophic as you suggest.And they may even choose to reject their draft selection. Granted that it's unlikely, but they're well entitled to do it. Of course it'd be the end of their AFL career - but you could imagine a kid facing the dilemma of (for example) going to play footy for Brisbane or studying Medicine at Melbourne Uni.
If someone chooses not to report to the team they are drafted to, they can simply play in a state league and re-enter the draft the following year.
Sure, it may not be looked upon kindly by the other clubs, but I would think that as long as the draftee makes it clear that they were simply exercising their rights and making an informed decision on their future, it's hard to imagine clubs looking at them too unfavourably.
