Same old Ottens?

Geelong should do to Ottens what North is trying to do with Hay...cut his salary by 25% at least.

So far, Big Dud Otto (BDO) has played about 10 seasons of footy, and only 1 has been good enough for what he has been getting paid. Overpaid and under delivers, exactly what all supporters hate.

Geelong, you will learn the hard way if you haven't already about Big Dud Otto. By the end of this year, Thompson will be gone, and expect BDO to be too.

Kingsley was a good pickup. I am a bit baffled as to why no other team traded for him. 30-40 is on the lower end of what he will kick. I think more like 40-50.

How can you be baffled? 6 goals in 5 games is hardly head turning.

Yep, me. Although I totally agree about Thompson being ignorant and incompetent.

The reality is, Ottens has been pretty good for us. Not brilliant, not All-Australian, but certainly not crap either. If you want to criticise a Geelong ruckman start with King, and you'd have ample ammunition. For some reason Ottens attracts scrutiny and slander from other supporters and the media that I've never understood. It's as if everyone expected him to be a superstar after 2001, and are personally outraged he's turned into a good player instead of a great one. He played every single game last year and was easily our best ruckman - as well as being our only marking forward of any note. That's not an irrational outburst - I freely bag Geelong where I see fit and I don't dislike Richmond at all. Being good and solid doesn't make news though, so I guess that's half the reason scum like Sheahan create the (false) headlines they do.

He'll have another good year in 2007. You won't read that in any news report however.

You gave up Brent Moloney and a first round draft pick for him though.

You gave up Brent Moloney and a first round draft pick for him though.

Ever since I saw Moloney step onto the field, I was impressed. He runs hard, is physical around packs and kicks looooooooooooooong and direct. Some might say he's a one trick pony, but it is a fair trick. To this day, I believe Brent was expendable because at the time we pulled the trigger on the Ottens deal, BOmber Thompson didn't have the word "direct" in his vocabulary. Geelongs style of play was chip, chip, run, chip, look for a forward on the lead, which actually worked very well for us. Moloney would get it and bomb it long to a contest. At the time we didn't have the forward structure to support his style, but was too good to not play in the seniors, therefore was used as bait to acquire someone who we desparately need.

I for one would love to have him on our list still as I don't believe our midfield has a physical presence that we require (when cam mooney was in the guts last season was when we played our best footy IMO) and now we don't have anyone that can play direct footy kicking to the one guy who is capable of consistently taking a contested mark if you get it in quickly.

Regardless, to this day I still believe were better off having Ottens on our list then Moloney. If it were not for Ottens, we would have to play Mark Blake and would have been over the past year.

Playing Mark Blake... Well... That's not a good thing.

Besides it is much easier to find good midfielders then good talls.
Regarding draft picks. Geelong at the time had either the youngest or 2nd youngest list in the AFL. If you get the chance to acquire a big bloke nearing his prime, I think it is a good move.

Due to injuries (not to him personally) he has not been able to fulfil his role for the club as he has been playing dual roles. If King stays fit and for the love of GOD if we play Moondog in the guts/HF this could potential see us rise to the heights of 2004 and beyond. I still don't believe our midfield is disciplined enough though.

In summary. Deal was win/win for both clubs, well all 3 clubs I suppose as Richmond were going nowhere with or without Ottens.

I think we'll be good on the field this season, but I'm still excited about our future probably even more so. It is amazing we have the list that we have today considering our lowest pick since I can remember was like 7th, but now of course I am going off topic...

I wasnt a big Ottens fan when he was first traded here but I am happy with what he has done so far. as most of us are. but I have seen a lot of training and the practice games so far this year and there seems to be something different there with him. Dont know for sure but I think its going to be big for him this year

He may well have a big year for you but don't hold your breath.

I was a huge fan of Ottens and sorry to see him leave because of his 'potential'. However most Tigers fans now would certainly feel vindicated on the decision to let him go because of the money he's was on certainly didn't match the output. The same could be said of his first two years at Geelong.

Unfortunately despite his abilities, he is destined to be an unfulfilled talent because I honestly believe he misses the most important ingredients. Heart & desire.

By the way does anyone know if he signed for two or three years at the Cats or is this the beginning of a new contract?

Perhaps if it's a new one I would almost guarantee it would be performance base and considerably less. Perhaps that's why he's having such a good pre-season for a change. Reality has hit..

As I have said most of us are over it. If he becomes a champ so be it but you'll have to forgive the scepticism because he's promised much before.

2005 was a disappointment but in 2006 he earnt his wage.
Played 22
11th in the league for hit outs
12th in the league for contested marks
26 goals
Most would agree he had a good year.

e

He had one bad spell in an otherwise consistent career.

Althought I agree with the "e" comment, not so sure about the "consistent" part.

If you want 40+ goals out of him, this is how to go about it.

Play Richo out of the goal square and give him the corridor. Give Brown and Kingsley one side of the 50 each and have Pettifer, your other HFs lead up the ground. Opposition defences will opt to put their quickest big on Kent as he is deceptively quick. For his size Richo is quick. Can't kick well either so if he gets his shots with no angle, surely his accuracy will improve.

Pound it into Kent early. If he kicks a goal early, keep him on and make him your main target. If he sprays it or doesn't even touch it, get him off the ground, do NOT put him back on at all for the rest of the game under any circumstances. You're better off with 17 men on the field.

I have never seen a better example of a confidence kicker. The only way with Kent is a bag of 4+ otherwise more often then not 6-7 touches with 1.4 and that's if you're lucky.

Or alternatively only play him against Essendon.

Yeah yeah, we hear the same ******** every year.

Anyone who believes that crap that comes out about their club in preseason like *player A is having a killer pre-season and is going to have a ripper year* or *player N has put on 4 kgs in muscle without losing any speed and will be impossible to match up on this season*.

I don't think fans realize that EVERY team is doing a pre-season.

well cats2007 thanks for your support. But you may recall that Ottens had a restricted preseason last year due to injury and still had a pretty serviceable season for Geelong. This year he has trained the whole preseason and has looked very good in the intra-club matches so far.

Thanks for reminding me that the other clubs have had preseasons as well, geee I would never have known. Luckilly we can all be patronised by one so wise as you.

You're not picking up what I'm putting down.

What I'm saying is every year each club talks up one or two of their players and tell us how they're flying, gonna have a big one etc. It gets a bit old, don't you think? Although it is fun to speculate, every pre-season it is the same rubbish over and over. We all know Ottens has potential, but we all know he has no heart. Doesn't matter how good his body is feeling or whatever mate, even at full fitness he didn't exactly dominate games in past seasons gone by. I don't know what could happen over the course of his 7th pre-season or whatever that would change that.

This is one of those things that should be better off waiting to see on the field in competition. Intra-club practise matches aren't exactly the most nerve racking game situation players must face..

For the money he's on I wouldn't.
They are alright numbers but I'd be amazed if Thompson was pleased with his season.
As a high profile recruit who cost plenty he'd be wanting Brad to dominate the odd game I'd think.
Took a nice mark though.

Otto also finished in the top 10 of our B&F last year which was a good effort. I am not surprised at the continual bitterness of tiger supporters over Otto. We went through a similar thing with Leigh Colbert. But unlike you, we did get over it

It was a big win for supporters too, C2007. After all what else did us Tiger and Cat supporters have to wind each other up about. We haven't a great history of stealing decent players off each other.

The only thing we had to hold against the Cats was Gary Ablett repeatedly tearing us a new one in the early 90's, and you lumbering us with Craig Bissiscombe in the late 90's. I don't know which of these hurt us more?

Otto will be a major player this season, and he'll give the Cats great service over the next handful of years.

Nathan Brown is being paid handsomely at Richmond.Could you please inform us what his done on field in recent weeks ?

Keep floging that dead horse Terry.Eventually you'll get over it.

Your an idiot JUBJUB, Browny is better than any player at Geelong when he is fit..... he had a horrific accident and all you can do is throw cheap shots at him online... say it to his face you little girl.... He'd smash the ******** out of you

He broke his leg playing footy I agree it was terribly shocking but did you realise Ottens fell off a roof and impaled a stick through his upper leg?

I think you will find that JUBJUB was comparing Nathan Brown's output to Brad Ottens' when they were both injured - which obviously can't be anything. Please read the post before you have another dummyspit.

It is so funny reading what Terry Tan has to say about Ottens....

A broken record? Are you still hurt? Just let it go, for everyone's sake.

99% of Richmond fans have - you just can't.

For the first time in 6 years, Brad Ottens played terrifically well. That's how good he can, and should be every week, every year. It's taken him a long time, but maybe this could be his big year. If it is, good luck to him...it's about time he delivered.

Ha, I've found a fair amount of watching Cat and my fellow Tiger supporters go at this topic for a few years now. All I can parallel 'The Otto Situation' with is one of an ex-girlfiend.

The ex-girlfriend (Otto) has clearly dumped me (Tiger supporters) for someone else (Cat supporters). Whenever she (Otto) puts out (plays a good game) for her new boyfriend (Cat supporters), he rings me (Tiger supporters) up to say how good she (Otto) is in the sack (on the footy field), how much better off she (Otto) is now (an integral part of the GFC), and what I (Tiger supporters) am now missing out on (Otto in the hand rather than Meyer and Pattison in the bush).

Alternatively, when I (Tiger supporters) see her (Otto) at times when it seems she's let herself go (Otto has a run of bad form) or in the midst of some PMT-induced psychosis (Otto plays crap), I (Tiger supporters) can't help ringing up her new boyfriend (Cat supporters) to taunt him and remind him how much better off I (Tiger supporters) am without her (Otto) and seeing others (Meyer and Pattison in the bush rather than Otto in the hand).

It's all a bit of fun, but eventually everyone needs to move on. Best of luck to the big feller (the ex-girlfriend) in 2007. Hope she puts out big time for the Cats, but has a bad hair day when playing the Tigers.
