we are still the same team as what we have been in the past 5 yrs...turn over turn over turn over...lack of skills and with some players commitment..lucas didnt even look like he wanted to be there..dempsey inconsistant.myers not showing what he,s been hyped about...only positive tonight was hurley...looks a potential champion...great mark and kick but also great poise and decision making...we have a long way to go...get ready for the pain....:(

Before you go making more harsh judgements, I'd suggest waiting 'till at least the half way mark of the real season. Most players are still blowing out the cob-webs now, and should be all good for round one. Hurley showed good signs, Winderlich followed on from last week and Alwyn looked sharp at times. It's not all bad.

i agree with the OP. What positives were there from that game?? there was only about 2. Did they even practice there kicks during the pre-season? Worst game i have seen in a long time and me thinking we will make the 8 was a stupid thought.

i am not ready to hang essendon on a couple of nab cup games but i agree with the op as well. We are blowing off the same cob webs as the other teams we have played. our disposal is not up to scratch. Until that improves then we are going to struggle. its as simple as that.

Hitting targets to a certain extent is a team thing. The feeling of knowing where the next in line is enables you to get the ball to the right spot.

It wasn't impressive tonight but there is a chance a sudden non robotic team feeling will explode and every player will just be in the right place at the right time and a subtle premiership feeling will erupt within the club.

Of the new breed, Darcy Daniher is the one I like to bring a team feeling on.

Collingwood were close to full strength tonight.
We weren't anywhere near full strength, so the result was expected.

Though I do agree with you, our poor disposal skills were on show again tonight. Hasn't improved all that much from week 1, if any. But I'm not getting too caught up with the preseason comp. As long as we don't get any LTI's and a few senior players get some valuable match fitness under their belts, I'm happy.

Positives:
1. Winderlich looking as if he'd never had a career threatening injury, looking better, in fact, than I ever remember him being (though that may say more about my memory).
2. Davey showing poise and excellent skill, instead of blazing and messing up the kick, as if he'd been practising mentally whilst injured.
3. Hurley. Hurley. Hurley. Couldn't ask for a more natural first game against big boys. 4. Jetta showing some maturity in running to the right places.
5. Even on an off night Hille doesn't disappear.
6. Hocking showing real improvement.
7. Bellchambers lovely set shot; possible Hille carbon copy.
8. Whilst he'll never win a Brownlow, there are spots in premiership sides for players like Dyson, if they're committed enough. He showed tonight that he is, I reckon.
9. The stands didn't fall down.

We were missing....
Frazer - Maxwell -Obrien - Meds-Rocca- Benny johnno and maybey Rusling but its arguable if he is in our best at the moment...
..but prob 6 players from full strength....

10. Destroyed the Pies at the clearences without Watson, McVeigh and Welsh.

Yep, that's why I said close to full strength. Rocca probably won't make it back into your side early on. Anthony, Cloke & all the small forwards are a deadly combination. Rusling won't make it in the 22 early on in the season IMO. O'Brien's alright, may come in for someone like Cox or possibly even Presti.

Compare that to our outs though, and the amount of players only just making their way back into things, it's not even comparable.

We were missing all our starting midfield bar Stants with Watson, McVeigh, Lovett and Welsh out. Plus we were missing Prismall who would most likely be in the 22. Plus Reimers, Neagle and Gumby were out and they are all close to if not in the 22. And Fletch is hard to replace.

Yes our kicking was down but with a bit more luck we could've been much closer than it ended up against a side which had most of its best in.

First off I will say Collingwood played like a final eight side who clearly want to send a message to the AFL that they are serious contenders.

I was happy with Myers tonight, Stants clearly was rusty, sure it would be easy to be unhappy but it is still a pre-season game and I'm sure we all knew beforehand that Colllingwood are a class above.

It's a NAB Cup game - you can't read much into who's looking rusty.

On the other hand, seeing blokes like Daniher, Dyson and Stanton all improve considerably on last year (the latter with his defensive efforts) fills me with some confidence that we will improve.

Add the dash of Lovett, the clearance winning ability of Watson, the defensive and rebounding prowess of Fletcher, the absolute class of McVeigh and the aggression, toughness and enthusiasm of Reimers back into that side, and we're looking a lot stronger than this.

We still have three full weeks on the track before Round 1, and I highly doubt that blokes like Lloyd, Lucas et al. who have been taking it easy will still be lacking sharpness then.

just as going deep in the nab cup can have a clubs supporters patting each other on the back thinking 'looking good for the real stuff', stinking the joint up as we did for most of last night can have the opposite effect.

however it was a nothing game, a practice match & boy oh boy did we need the practice

bring back in fletch, watson, mcveigh & the new blood of reimers, gumby, neagle, hurley etc & we will be competitive but im not expecting any miracles early on

If we'd hit our targets tonight, we would have come close to them.

A lot of there goals in the 1st half came from our mistakes inside 50.

The poor skills are a real worry. Be it Nab Cup or not , missing simple targets when not under pressure is simply not on at AFL level.
We will continue to be a mid range side if we dont fix the problem.

Overall the loss was not a major concern at this stage of the year.

Personally, I thought the lack of movement from our forwards really contributed to our poor skills.

Our forwards were far too deep forcing defenders and midfielders coming out of defense to keep running into a wall of Collingwood players across the middle, whereas Collingwood always had a hit-up option on the wings to make the transition from defense to attack.

This is where Gumbleton and McPhee will be important.

LOL Collingwood were missing way more talent im afraid.

Medhurst, Rocca, Johnson, Fraser, O'Brien, Maxwell, H.Shaw (played 1/4) aswell as Rusling who if fit would be in our best 14. Quite sure a few others. I would only rate Welsh, McViegh as key missing players. Fletcher is lucky he is fast otherwise he wouldve been delisted last year and Watson couldnt kick to save himself. 15th - 16th.
