What do people think of this? Is Thompson robbing Johnson of his one real strength? Whats more is he robbing the team of something unique?

Thompson predicts Johnson will show a little less flair once he is back in the AFL.

But the Cats coach made it clear that is exactly what he wants.

"I don't think he'll be as exciting and as different as what he's been in other years, I think he'll play more like the rest of the players at the club.

Wants him to be a paper cut out like himself, the bloke has no idea!

I wasn't real keen on that comment either. SJ's flair is what makes him valuable. Sure, get him to do the team things, but there are few things more team oriented than a miracle goal either. Perhaps he can come back with the individualism tempered, but he should still be given some free reign to do something miraculous when the chance presents.

I think what he means is that he won't try and do things he can't actually do.
He'll definently pull a few freak goals out but he won't do it every single time he gets the ball, which pissed me off a bit.
He'll start working a lot harder getting his own ball and playing the team game.

We need a players like Johnson. An element of the unknown. Sure he has to be more of a team player but I am sure that Thompson does not want him to loose that edge.
His penalty was too harsh, would any other club of treated him the same way? They should have the ability of contolling fining him without penalising the team

It was fairly general knowledge that SJ was enjoying the good life too often and deserved the severe penalty imposed, and that he has ongoing ankle problems, but he is a valuable player who can bring back a bit of magic. This is a typical Bomber remark - relegate it to the dustbin with his other profound, insightful comments and look forward to what Stevie Wonder might contribute to a flat side. Cats/Hawks replay about to start on Foxtel ...must rush!

I dont think it is a bad thing. Typically Johnsons games have been plauged with laziness and selling himself into trouble a lot of the time. If he does those things right and couples them with his freakish abilities he will be a dangerous player.

I just hope that he picks up his man when the opposition have the ball. Lack of accountability really cost us on the weekend as it did many times last year. Same deal against bulldogs. We can't afford to carry any forwards that can't stay with their man whether it be because of lack of fitness or pace. This goes for Mooney/Ottens/NAblett and Hawkins too. Its all good and well having a height advantage on your forward line, but if these players can't stay with their man, then they can be a real liability. I think Ottens was found out this way many times last year. It only takes one player not to be able to go with his man and the oppositon can carry the ball all the way to their forward line more or less unopposed by carrying the lose man. No easy goals for the opposition and we'll win a lot more games.

The way i read it, is that Thompson thinks Steve will be too scared to try all his flair once he returns to the side, because of the fear of stuffing up, but actually wants him to keep his flair.

He's done everything he could possibly do to play football again."It (the suspension) seemed to get his mind right and it seemed to, at this stage, do what we meant it to do."

"That's what we want him to be, one of the players."

The last line seems to indicate he doesn't want him to be Johnno more like those excitement machines Ling and Byrnes.:rolleyes:

Wait, so he wants him to start chipping the ball sideways?

The thing about players like Johnson is his form as been excellent in the VFL, his ankles are fixed, and he is going to be a massive in for our forward line. He looks a bit more team orientated and alot more focused so while we will still see his brilliance we will now also see him play smarter.

His ankles are not fixed, they will never be fixed.

I think Bomber has hit the nail on the head.

What the team need from SJ is his abilities, but more so to do with his team play, therefore having some substance in his play not just the flair.

He was totally torn apart by the Kanga's last time, SJ looked terrible, so I think what Bomber was on about is more team play and less flair.

I can't see a problem in that.
