Any one know what happened to Ash Sampi. I know he got delisted by us and then went into the draft and no one picked him up. But whats he doing now he's not playing in the WAFL.
Did he just give up footy altogether:confused::confused:

Plays for Port Fairy now. Funny you should ask this at this time cause I googled him and look what came up.

Port may cut Sampi ties
PETER FLETCHER

PORT Fairy is on the verge of parting company with its high-profile Western Australian recruit Ashley Sampi.

The former West Coast Eagles forward hasn't returned from Perth, where he travelled to seek a diagnosis for a knee injury after the round nine game against Terang Mortlake on June 14.

Port Fairy president Damien Gleeson yesterday said the club was disappointed Sampi hadn't been at training this week.

``Obviously we haven't selected him to play this week and from the club's point of view we'll probably sever ties with him,'' Gleeson said.

``His contract has training obligations.

``It's just become a communication issue, which obviously he's failed to do.''

Gleeson said he spoke with coach Brad Cassidy yesterday but Cassidy hadn't heard from Sampi either.

``We gave him opportunities to resurrect his football career,'' he said.

``He's experienced some injury problems and we sent him to Perth to get that sorted.''

Gleeson declined to comment further.

Calls to Sampi by The Standard during the past week haven't been returned.

Sampi played eight games for Port Fairy and three for the Hampden league at the VCFL Country Championships in Shepparton.

Although he showed glimpses of his AFL touch, the 24-year-old forward managed four goals for the Seagulls during his round six contribution.

He only once appeared in their best players, - against Koroit in a 26-point loss.

His best performance was at interleague level for Hampden in a game against Ballarat when he started on the ball.

His clearance work guided the Bottle Greens to a dominant first half but poor finishing enabled Ballarat to clinch victory.

When he joined Port Fairy Sampi told The Standard he hoped to use Port Fairy as a springboard back into the AFL.

He said the club's connection with the Melbourne Football Club helped the Seagulls sign him.

Sampi missed being drafted by Melbourne late last year after a five-week trial.

``I thought Port Fairy was the best fit,'' Sampi said at the time.

``I do have a lot of work to do but I'm keen to get into it and get back playing AFL.

``The first thing I need to do is start playing good football again.''

Mmmm, turtle. :D Nah, he can do what he wants now.
But seriously, he actually looks kinda happy in that shot. Can't remember the last time i saw him smiling..

You've obviously never seen him lining up at Hungry Jacks then

Always a shame to see such talent wasted. It happens for different reasons, but Samps looks like he took some family stuff badly and never recovered.

I always liked Dennis' stories about Samps playing basketball with his son (at Aquinas?). Dennis regularly said Samps was one of the best athletes he had ever seen.

Footy isn't everything. Obviously Sampi just didn't want it enough. Good luck to him in what he does want.

Not sure there is much to be gained from pursuing a career in eating (turtle & burgers) and sitting on an expanding arse all day..... sure, footy isnt everything but in his case it appears he wants to play footy as a career but is just lazy and lacking in self discipline.

I never rated him and I thought we should have traded him years ago.

To think we could have drafted Bartel, Dal Santo, Kelly, Gram or Ladson instead of him makes me sick.

Add Dane Swan and Paul Medhurst to that list!
