3AW interviewed Ashley Sampi last night. I tune out almost immediately when it's an opposition player and even if it is a Carlton boy it's usually the same generic answers, more than likely beginning with the word, "Obviously..."

I have to say Sampi gave the most refreshing and happy interview I've heard in a long time. You could almost hear him smiling and he was so down to earth it was fantastic. Not only is he a star player and probably a ten year player for you at that, it's great that he's not an egg carton footballer either. I hope he continues to rise.

He spoke about where he grew up, (south of Broome), and kicking the footy around with his cousins. Said he was honered to be wearing Chris Lewis's number and flattered by comaprisons. Took the **** out of his hair. Was wary of the Collingwood supporters aggro but was happy they bagged Phil Matera more than him. Said he was prepared to move to Melbourne before the draft but was wrapped to be selected by the Eagles. Really good natured bloke.

wait a second here.

I dont mind critiscm, but this is just plain stupid.

Your star player is South Australia (an import is an import) and your "gun" recruit is from Hawthorn.

Victorian, West Aussie or Tasmanian makes no difference. Once they pull on the blue and gold (with a splash of ochre) they are playing for the Eagles.

It's a national competition.

That wasn't critiscm it was praise, The WCE premiership team of 1992 contained only Geoff Miles (victorian) who had been in WA for years.

The 1994 side had David Hynes (Saffie)

It is good to see that WCE are giving the locals a chance as I believe while some imports are necessary , IMHO there are too many at WCE to the detriment of local Players.

It is no coincidence that the Lions have Improved since they have had some (still not enough) home grown products.

hmmmmmm, I dont know the exact numbers now, obviousbly the lists haev changed a bit over the last few of years, but in the 1999 season, West Coast had one of the highest % of players from their home state from any team within the league - top 2 or 3. Freo were about 6th from memory.

Brisbane and Sydney were by far the lowest.

Can't remember it exactly.

At least all our coaches are West Australians. Half your coaching staff are Vics!

Back to Sampi - there was some article about new styles of hair. One of them is called "Corn Plats" or something like that - and they used Sampi's hair vs Geelong as an example!

This boy has style!

not much of a difference except the coaching staff.
How do you get 13? I make it 11 or 12 if you count Koops but he is exempt from the argument as he comes from the NT and was recruited from West Perth where his uncle played with great distinction.

If you add the rookie list WC has 15 and freo has still 11 (three who haven't played a senior game).
