Hi Footy fans...

This past week saw the AFL's Hall of Fame induction ceremony, with two South Australians among the seven past greats of the game who cemented their place in Australian Football folklore. First it was Michael O'Loughlin, a Central District junior who never even made it to senior level. In fact, he bypassed it altogether as the Sydney Swans picked him up in the 1994 National Draft at Number 40 and he went on to play over 300 games. Next it was long time SA football servant Bob Hammond, who was a big influence on and off the field for clubs, his state and the game itself not just in his home territory but nationally as well when the AFL came knocking looking for a different perspective than that of Victoria. We'll talk about them more later, but now lets get to the nitty-gritty of this past weekend.

Welcome to the Round 9 edition of the SANFL Wrap-Up.

There was only one Saturday afternoon match for the long weekend, so we're heading north to the Playford Alive Oval in Elizabeth for the clash between the Bulldogs and the Magpies. Despite all of Port's firepower at hand last season, they had to outlast the Dogs who had a rather average 2014. In Round 9 at Alberton, the Magpies were 13-point winners. But then in Round 16, in what could have been considered one of the games of the season, the Bulldogs managed to nick the points in a match that contained 31 goals. The Magpies left Elizabeth with a three-point loss. Last week, the 'Pies were given a fright by an even more unlikely source -- the Tigers -- and on their home deck no less. The Bulldogs were all over the Magpies early on, if not for inaccuracy they could have taken a more handy lead but kicked 3.5 to 2.1 to lead by 10 points at the first change. Some poor discipline crept into the Magpies' game in the second quarter, allowing the Dogs to kick 5.2 to Port's three goals. One Dogs' goal actually came immediately after one was scored due to an ill-timed Port infringement whilst the ball was in transit to the centre for the restart! But in what has been a nasty habit this year from the Bulldogs, their third quarter was going to let them down as the visitors held them to just two lousy behinds whilst bagging 5.2 for themselves to take over the lead. At the final change, it was a goal the difference for Port. A late challenge by the Dogs almost brought rewards, but the Magpies managed to keep the home side at bay long enough to take victory. Port's 3.4 to Centrals' 3.2 would give them an eight-point win. Brendon AhChee was named best for Port, while the Bulldogs' captain Paul Thomas led by example for his best afield votes.

Two matches were scheduled for the Sunday afternoon timeslot, the first of which takes us to Coopers Stadium in Norwood for the contest between the Redlegs and the Bloods. The Westies mob haven't had much luck against the Redlegs lately, not to mention the fact they haven't won at Norwood for the past six trips to The Parade. Their most recent match was back in Round 16 last year, the Redlegs inflicting a harsh 89-point hammering on Norwood soil. They had also dropped a game at Richmond earlier in the season, a low-scoring affair saw the Bloods go down by 21 points in Round 9. This time around, it was going to be a all-in, backs-to-the-wall fight. There wouldn't be much separating these sides for the entire afternoon, with deficits at the breaks not being more than a single straight kick. The Redlegs would take a one-point lead at quarter-time, having scored 3.2 to the Bloods' 3.1. The second term was an all-out slog, the 'Legs adding an extra point to the gap by the long break after they scored 2.3 to 2.2. Despite some indecision, several skill errors and scoring chances going awry, the near 4000-strong crowd in attendance was treated to a contest with two quality teams. The Redlegs seemed to have the momentum after taking their advantage past a single straight shot, getting out to a 15-point lead at one stage in the third term. But by three quarter-time and despite some inaccuracy, Westies equalised the scores at 50 points each, having scored 2.5 to 2.3. But the Redlegs would manage to snatch the victory, after kicking 4.1 the Bloods' last minute rally of 3.1 would allow Norwood a win by one goal, time running out with the ball in striking distance of Westies' goal. Matt Suckling was named best for the Redlegs, while the Bloods voted in Jonathon Beech as their best afield.

The other Sunday arvo match takes us to the south side of town, over to the Peter Motley Oval in Unley where the Double Blues hosted the Crows. The Blues is one of the few itches that the Crows have been unable to scratch thus far in their short existence in the SANFL. Their two matches in 2014 both resulted in Sturt victories, the first was in Round 2 by 37 points, followed by a one-goal escape in Round 17. But this time around, more AFL-listed depth found its way in with two key figures making their comebacks from long-term injury problems. Add that to a side that already had AFL-level players still priming themselves for elevation, the Double Blues had a problem on their hands, as if they didn't have any already. The Crows burst from the blocks straight away, kicking 5.1 to the Blues' two goals to take a 19-point lead into quarter-time. It got worse by half-time, Adelaide banging through a further 6.4 to Sturt's 3.1 as they went into the break with a 40-point advantage. When play resumed, the Double Blues would manage to draw back that deficit. They scored 5.3 to the Crows' three goals to cut the gap down to 25 points to give the home faithful something to hold onto. But unfortunately for them, the Crows had just saved their best until last. They would leave the home side in their wake and eating dirt as the Crows flew out of Unley with a 49-point victory, finishing the afternoon off with an 8.3 to 4.3 final term. Jarryd Lyons was named best for Adelaide, the Double Blues named Michael Coad as their best.

The holiday Monday was the setting for the remaining two games, the first of which finds us at the Gilderol Stadium in Glenelg for the traditional Queen's Birthday match between the Tigers and the Roosters. The Tigers have so far had nothing to sing about this season, with only one premiership point to their name. But the Roosters have not fared much better, with only one point more keeping them off the foot of the ladder. Last season's games had the Roosters rip several patches of fur off their old rivals, North taking the two games at Prospect and at the Bay with margins of 42 and 57 points respectively. The match would begin with next to nothing separating the two teams at quarter-time, the Roosters took a two-point lead after kicking an inaccurate 2.5 to the Tigers' 2.3. But the Tigers would turn that right around in the second term, kicking 4.1 to 1.3 to go into the half-time break with a 14-point lead. The Roosters' third term was truly lamentable, with all their entries into their attacking zone they still would not be able to re-take control. The Bays would still lead at the final change despite their own inability to stamp their authority, they added 2.2 to 2.1 to add a point to their half-time lead. The Tigers would go on to have one of their best quarters of football for the season, bagging 6.4 to the Roosters' 3.2 to finally break into the winner's circle for 2015 with their 35-point win. Tigers captain Andrew Bradley was named best for the Bays, while the Roosters named Darren Shillabeer as their standout.

In the final match for the long weekend, we head down south towards Noarlunga for the meeting between the Panthers and the Eagles at Hickinbotham Oval. These sides hadn't clashed yet this season, providing yet another look into how far both sides had truly come this season. The Panthers were a team that the Eagles had quite a struggle with in 2014, after taking a 10-point win in Round 5 at Noarlunga, it was then all pain. The second encounter in Round 16 saw the Panthers nick a six-point victory at Woodville, then came the Elimination Final at Adelaide Oval where South bumped the Eagles out of the race by 20 points. This game had a torrid opening, both sides managed just one goal each with behinds separating the two at quarter-time. South's five to the Eagles one saw the home side up by four points at the change. The Eagles would then hold their hosts to just one behind and with the wind at their backs, kicked 5.4 for themselves to go into half-time with a 29-point lead. When play resumed, the Eagles seemed to stop in their tracks themselves for the third quarter, kicking just three behinds. But the home side couldn't truly capitalize, kicking just 2.2 to cut the deficit back to three goals by three quarter-time. South wouldn't get any closer though, they would score a lowly 1.2 to finish their day while the visitors took 3.1 to win by 29 points and hop up to second spot on the league ladder. State vice-captain Luke Jarrad was voted best for the Eagles, while the Panthers named Matt Rose as their best on ground.

JUNIOR CROWEATERS TAKE VENGEANCE ON SANDGROPERS
Unlike the senior team, the South Australian U-18's had a second shot at Western Australia. After a heart-wrenching one-point loss in Perth two weekends previous, the Croweaters inflicted a 73-point hammering on the Sandgropers in the return match at AAMI Stadium in the expanded AFL Under-18 National Championships. A game-breaking second term saw SA keep the visitors to just one behind while booting 6.5 for themselves, then went on their merry way to victory to put their title defence right back on the rails hot on the heels of their victory against Victoria Metro last weekend. The next match is against Victoria Country at AAMI Stadium this coming Sunday at 11:00 am.

TWO SA INDUCTEES IN THE AFL HALL OF FAME
As mentioned earlier in the piece, Michael O'Loughlin and Bob Hammond were inducted into the AFL Hall of Fame for their commitment to the game over the years. O'Loughlin's story began in the junior zone that belonged to Central District, a club where he would play under age football. At the Bulldogs, that's about where his story in the red, white and blue would be limited to. His coach didn't think much of him then, but he would be made to eat humble pie eventually as the youngster was scooped up by Sydney where he played over 300 games which included three grand final appearances with one premiership in 2005. He also managed to don the red strip for South Australia in State of Origin football on two occasions, one appearance saw him win the Fos Williams Medal, he wore the national jumper in International Rules in four games and a was also a member of the Indigenous Team of the Century.

Bob Hammond has a far more lengthy history in the game. He arrived at North Adelaide in 1960 from SA Amateur outfit Kilburn, where in his debut year took the SANFL premiership at age 18. Three years later, he was selected for the Croweaters outfit that defeated the Big V on the hallowed turf of the MCG and greeted back home by 10000 parochial South Australians. It took a while before he saw anything like that again, but then came the 1971 & 1972 premierships with the Roosters, the latter being the forerunner to North's national title victory against Carlton. He would then have a two year placement with Norwood as captain, before hanging up the boots to coach the Redlegs in 1974. He bagged two flags with Norwood, including the 1978 decider where they ended Sturt's unbeaten streak. In 1983 he would coach South Australia in a breakthrough match against Victoria for their first win on SA soil for 18 years which probably held him in good stead for a short stint with Sydney in 1984. In later years, he helped found the Adelaide Crows and even joined the AFL Commission.
