Hi Footy fans...

The season thus far has thrown a few unexpected curve balls at SA footy-heads. Some surprise victories from the likes of the Roosters and the Bloods, the Crows not having a win to their name and one of the lowest scoring drawn matches in decades, if ever. But one that took some by surprise and earning the ire of some SA footy-heads was the inclusion of an AFL-listed player who was under suspension... of sorts. The lines of communication between the AFL, the SANFL and the Port Adelaide Football Club seem to have been blurred. The investigation into an public incident has been handled rather haphazardly, not helped in any way by certain media circles and whether or not that player's appearance for the Magpies was given the go-ahead or not has come into question. They're either suspended or they aren't. Get it sorted, you lot, if you're reading this! But I digress.

Welcome to the Round 5 edition of the SANFL Wrap-Up.

There were just three games for the weekend with the teams from Tuesday and Wednesday given the week off, the first finds us at Coopers Stadium in Norwood for some Friday Night Mayhem between the Redlegs and the Crows. These sides shared the points from their two games last season, the Crows stealing it in Round 9 by two points and the 'Legs taking a 25-point win in Round 14. There was no luck for either team last week, the Redlegs going down to a resurgent Roosters outfit at Prospect, while the Crows' winless start continued against the Bulldogs. Norwood were all over the Crows early, but some players forgot their goal-kicking boots with a swag of opportunities going begging. The Redlegs would lead by eight points instead of eight goals, they kicked 3.8 to three goals without a miss. The horrid shooting would continue in the second term, despite keeping the Crows to just two behinds the Redlegs would add just 1.7 to extend their lead to 13 points by the long break. When play resumed, the Crows work-rate went up and soon enough, they would be within striking distance. In their first period of quality football all season, the visitors closed to within a kick of the lead after scoring 5.5 to 3.3. At three quarter-time, the Redlegs were up by just five points. But the Redlegs finished stronger in the final term, although still having accuracy issues they outscored the Crows 7.5 to 5.1 and won by 21 points. Former Crow Mitch Grigg was voted Norwood's best on ground, the Crows named Curtly Hampton as their best afield.

Match number two for the round takes us bay-side to the Gliderol Stadium in Glenelg, the Tigers facing off against the Bulldogs. The last time they met, the Dogs hammered the Tigers into submission at Elizabeth to the margin of 97 points. However, Tiger-land hasn't been a happy hunting ground as of late for the Dogs. One win out of five visits, their last victory was back in Round 3 of 2015. The Dogs put their foot to the throats of the Tigers in the early goings, but didn't capitalise on their opportunities in the first term. They would lead by 11 points at quarter-time with the scoreboard reading 2.2 to 0.3. They hit a vein of form for the second quarter though, the Tigers continued to miss goal opportunities and scored four behinds while the Dogs kicked 6.3 to lead by 46 points at half-time. A theme of the Dogs' year so far has been half-half football. They won halves of football but still managed to lose against the Eagles and Westies. Those drops in concentration and pressure can cost games. The Tigers finally found the big sticks in the third quarter, even cutting the gap back to 26 points early in time-on with their 3.3 to a single behind. A late goal to the Dogs put the three quarter-time margin back out to 32 points. The final term was ridden with more inaccuracy on goal, the Dogs would leave 33-point winners despite their second-half fadeout after kicking 1.5 to 1.4. The Dogs named SA training squad member Travis Schiller as their best, Josh Scott was named best afield for the Tigers.

The final game for the weekend took place on the Sunday afternoon over at Maughan Thiem Hyundai Oval in Woodville, with the Eagles hosting the Roosters. The Eagles bagged the points from both games in 2017, with a five-goal win at Prospect in Round 14 and an 11-point great escape at Oval Avenue in Round 8. Not too long ago after their capitulation to Centrals, some would think that the Eagles had this one in the bag going on form. After all, they hadn't dropped a game aside from a draw to Port. It would come as a surprise to all when the Roosters caught the Eagles a little off-guard early on with a pair of quick goals. The Eagles did answer back, but were behind by a point at quarter-time with the board reading 3.1 to 3.0. The Roosters upped the ante in the second term, keeping the hosts to one goal whilst adding 2.2 to their tally. At the half-time break, North were ahead by 15 points. The Roosters are fast becoming a surprise package, continuing their return to form after their morale-boosting win against Sturt two weeks ago and the 'Legs last week. It dropped off a touch when play resumed, as expected the Eagles came back to life and they would tie the scores up by three quarter-time. The home side kicked 5.3 to North's four goals, levelling the game at 9.3 a piece. But the undefeated streak would be brought to an end, the Roosters keeping the Eagles at bay long enough to seal a nine-point win after scoring 5.4 to 4.1 in the last term. Max Thring was voted best for the Roosters, perhaps enhancing his state team chances, while the Eagles named fellow SA squad member Jake Johansen as their best on ground.
