Hi Footy fans...

We got a few shock results from this past weekend of SANFL football, with some highly fancied opponents on the receiving end of some pre-finals reality checks. Only one thing can be said about that with only four more rounds of home and away footy left to go and that is for any of the top five sides to not underestimate those at the foot of the ladder. The Bulldogs, the Roosters and the Bloods have nothing left to play for except some lost pride and the prospect of dropping points at this time could prove fatal, especially for sides like the Redlegs, South and the Eagles. The spots for the Elimination Final are still well and truly up for grabs and there are some finals-shaping contests coming up over the remaining rounds.

Welcome to the Round 14 edition of the SANFL Wrap-Up.

First in this week's instalment of the wrap, we're going to start this Family Round with a visit to the chook-house of Prospect Oval where the Roosters hosted the Crows. The last game between these sides resulted in a 31-point win to Adelaide, a wasteful first term by North followed by a six goal to one second term by the Crows buried the Roosters' chances. Both sides came into this match after losses from Round 13, the Roosters falling just two points short against the Bloods at Richmond, while the Crows' winning streak was brought to an end by the Magpies at Port Pirie. Everyone would have believed that the Crows, still carrying a strong contingent of AFL-listed talent, would bounce back with a vengeance. So it would have been to the shock of many that despite an inaccuracy-laden opening quarter, it was North with the 21-point lead at the first change after scoring 3.7 to four behinds. Adelaide managed to find goals in the second term, but more poor shooting would allow the Roosters to stay ahead at the long break. The Crows' 4.6 to North's three goals brought the deficit back to nine points. A shootout ensued in the third term, both sides still finding goals difficult to score with the Roosters kicking 3.5 to 3.4 to make it a 10-point lead at the final break. The Crows ran out of gas in the final term, scoring just three behinds as the Roosters scored 3.1 to finally land positive points on the ladder with a 26-point win. Max Thring was named best afield for the Roosters, the Crows voted in Patrick Wilson as their best.

The second match of the weekend wasn't too far away from here, we now head around to the Coopers Stadium in Norwood where the Redlegs faced the Panthers. It was a heartbreaking end for the Panthers faithful from their last outing against the Redlegs in Round 9, after leading by 15 points at half-time a lapse in intensity by South allowed the Redlegs to kick seven goals to two in the third term. A final term fightback fell two points short in the end. Both sides were dealt losses last week, the Redlegs were handed a 46-point hiding at Tiger-land while the Panthers were forced to endure yet another narrow loss at home, this time against the Eagles by three points. The Panthers hit the lead the hard way to begin the afternoon, a string of missed opportunities keeping them within two straight kicks of the 'Legs at quarter-time with the board reading 3.6 to 2.2. By half-time the Redlegs would be in front, keeping the Panthers to just 1.1 whilst scoring 5.3 for themselves to lead by 16 points at the long break. The Norwood engine room stalled somewhat in the third quarter, but continued inaccuracy on goal by the Panthers allowed the home side to stay in the lead at three quarter-time. South scored 2.5 to 1.1 to bring the deficit down to seven points. But a final term blitz by the Redlegs buried the visitors, they kicked 7.6 to 1.4 to win by 45 points and elevate themselves to fifth spot. Matthew Nunn kicked four goals and took out best on ground honours for Norwood, the Panthers named Abaina Davis as their standout.

The other matches of Round 14 would take place on the Sunday afternoon, the first of which takes us to the Maughan Thiem Kia Oval in Woodville where the Eagles clashed with the Bulldogs. Back on the Queen's Birthday weekend of Round 9, it was the Eagles that got the presents with their 31-point victory at Goodman Road. The Dogs would hang within three goals of the lead at three quarter-time, but the Eagles had the answers in the final term. Centrals weren't able to put one over the Blues last week and went down by five points at Elizabeth, while the Eagles were only just able to nick the points at Noarlunga. The Eagles have dropped one game from their last seven and were the favourites for victory. The Doggies had a hard time shooting on goal in the opening stanza, they kicked 2.4 but the Eagles would manage just three goals to hold a two-point lead at quarter-time. No doubt more than a few Bulldogs fans had their hearts sink by half-time, their charges kicking just one goal while the Eagles scored 5.3 to take a 29-point lead into half-time. But everyone was in for a massive shock. Centrals came back to the field a completely different side, proceeding to ram home 7.2 and keep the Eagles to two behinds to lead by 13 points at three quarter-time. The Dogs completed the stunning turnaround with a 5.2 to 3.4 final term to win by 23 points, putting the Eagles' final chances in serious jeopardy. Centrals named Jarrod Schiller as their best on ground, Joe Sinor was voted best afield for the Eagles.

Again it wasn't going to be a long trip for the next match, we head a bit further up Port Road and over to the Alberton Oval where the Magpies took on the Tigers. Their last outing saw the Tigers hand the Magpies a 49-point hiding back in Round 8 at Glenelg, the Bays having to overcome a horribly inaccurate opening term where they kicked 2.11 but then proceeded to rip the 'Pies a new one, even keeping them to one point in the third term. They both emerged victorious last week, the Magpies bringing the Crows' streak to a halt out at Port Pirie and the Tigers brushing the Redlegs aside at home. This was to be a finals series preview and a measure as to how the Tigers would stack up against the AFL reserves sides with a match against Adelaide next week. What we got was the Tigers exposing every little flaw, starting with them keeping the Magpies to single point whilst scoring 3.2 in the first term to lead by 19 points at quarter-time. Port continued to miss opportunities in the second term, kicking three behinds to Glenelg's 2.3. At half-time it was a 31-point gap to the Bays. All the foot speed in the world wasn't going to bail Port out of this one, despite finally scoring a major their 2.2 to the Tigers' 4.1 saw the visitors out to a seven-goal lead by the final change. The Magpies' final term was an effort coming far too late, eventually going down by four goals after scoring 8.3 to 3.3. Luke Partington made up a third of the Tigers' goal tally and was named best on ground for the Bays, the Magpies named Paddy Ryder as their best.

For the final match of the weekend, we head over to the inner southern suburbs and into the Peter Motley Oval in Unley where the Double Blues played the Bloods. Not even a rough time in front of goal could stop the Blues back in Round 7 at Richmond, they kicked nine goals from 27 scores and won by 19 points. West were ahead by 11 points at quarter-time but with the Blues having the bulk of the ball control they couldn't bridge the gap. The Blues were given an almighty scare by the Dogs last week but found their way to victory, as did the Bloods in their low-scoring afternoon against the Roosters. The game began with an evenly fought opening term, the Blues taking a one-point lead into the quarter-time huddle after scoring 3.3 to the Bloods' 3.2. Soon enough though, the Blues would stamp their absolute authority on the game. The Bloods were shutout of the second term, kept scoreless as Sturt booted 7.3 to run out to a 46-point lead by half-time. With the Magpies' eventual loss, third spot was about to be usurped by the Blues. The third term was the only period that West would outscore the home side, but not by much. Westies scored three goals without a miss to the Blues' 2.4, the deficit reduced to 44 points by three quarter-time. Sturt finished off strongly to close the game, scoring five goals to the Bloods' two to run out 62-point winners. Josh Hone kicked six, but it was James Battersby that was named Sturt's best on ground, the Bloods would name Tom Keough as their best.
