Hi Footy fans...

To say time is running out at Round 12 just doesn't sound right, doesn't it? But this year that is exactly the case. Usually we'd have around six to eight rounds left, allowing for surprise finals berths that had been in the making for weeks, such as the last ditch dash by the Bulldogs in 2015 or the most famous run of all being the Redlegs of 1984. While the Bulldogs fell short in a preliminary final five years ago, Norwood went all the way as did the Roosters only two years ago. They had time on their side back then, this year there is no such luxury. Thanks to the current situation with COVID-19, there are now just two weeks to go before finals kick off and while the Eagles and the Roosters are already in thanks to their records, the Panthers and the Tigers are not totally home and hosed. Still within strike of an Elimination Final spot are the Redlegs, while the Blues will need a miracle to slip through the door in a fortnight's time. It would be most disappointing for the Glenelg faithful especially if they can't at least make it into October, their premiership defence seemingly on the brink of total collapse. Two weeks, people... two weeks.

Welcome to the Round 12 edition of the SANFL Wrap-Up.

We start the wrap this week with some Friday Night Mayhem as we head over to the inner west of Adelaide, the Bloods facing the Panthers at the Hisense Stadium in Richmond. Back in Round 5 at Noarlunga, the Panthers won by 20 points but probably should have won by more. After being ahead by over seven goals at three quarter-time, the Bloods held the Panthers to just one point in the last term but couldn't totally bridge the gap. Both teams were dealt defeats last week, the Bloods getting hammered by the Tigers by over 12 goals while the Panthers were brought down in surprise fashion by the Double Blues at Unley. South were overrun in the final term, outscored four to one in the goal department to go down by 33 points. The Panthers at this time were in fourth, with the Redlegs breathing down their necks. Their start here tonight wasn't totally convincing, they began the game with a horribly inaccurate first term where they scored 1.5 to the Bloods' 2.1, the home side up by two points at quarter-time. Westies got the first goal of the second quarter to stretch their advantage, but soon enough though, the Panthers' claws were out on full display. South took over from here onwards, they proceeded to bag 5.3 to the Bloods' 2.2 to go into the half-time break with a 17-point lead. The Panthers got straight back to work when play resumed, scoring three goals within seven minutes of the restart. The Bloods only managed 2.1 as the Panthers altogether scored 6.3 to take their advantage out to 43 points going into the final change. By night's end, the Panthers were elevated to third on the league ladder with superior percentage, while the Bloods were now in serious danger of collecting yet another wooden spoon. The visitors' continued to pile it on in the final quarter, adding a further 5.2 to the Bloods' 2.3 to romp away to a 10-goal win. Joel Cross scored three goals, racked up 26 disposals and laid four tackles to be named South's best on ground, while Kaine Stevens was the Bloods' standout with 22 disposals and seven marks.

Across to the eastern side of the city is where we're going next for the other Friday match for the night, the Redlegs taking on the Double Blues at the Coopers Stadium in Norwood. Their last encounter was one that well and truly got away from the Blues. In their Round 5 outing, the Blues burst from the blocks to kick seven goals to three in the opening term only to end up having their attackers running on fumes for the remainder of the game. They would score just three goals from 14 scoring shots as the Redlegs gradually reeled them back in to win by 15 points at Unley. The Blues came into this one with a win behind them, defeating the more fancied Panthers at home. The Redlegs on the other hand were handed a surprise 13-point defeat at the hands of the Bulldogs at Elizabeth. At this time the Double Blues were still a mathematical chance of finals football, despite being sixth. Same as the 'Legs in fifth, only one game out of the four on points. Both sides had troubles with accuracy to begin with, the Blues taking a two-goal lead into the first change after scoring 4.4 to 2.4. The Redlegs returned fire in the second term, but although they kept the Blues to just one behind, their continued inaccuracy resulted in a return of 2.7 to take a one-goal lead into the half-time break. The Redlegs were using the ball a lot more, doubling the Blues' mark count and laying a lot more tackles. It just didn't translate as such on the scoreboard with the Blues still well and truly in the game. Sturt would bring the game to level pegging come three quarter-time, outscoring Norwood 3.2 to 2.2 to tie the scores up at 49 points each. It was an all-out battle, the Redlegs opening the final term with two goals. Then Sturt kicked four of the next five goals to lead by a kick at the 16 minute mark. But the Redlegs, with their season on the line, finished the stronger outfit. After a trio of missed opportunities late in the term, one last major by the home side taking them to a three-point win. The Redlegs would name Ryan Bastinac as their best on field, with 29 disposals and laying 10 tackles. James Battersby is sure to be Sturt's best and fairest this season, again named their standout with 28 disposals and four tackles.

We now head into some Saturday afternoon action for the other two games on the schedule, the first of which takes us to the Maughan Thiem Kia Oval in Woodville where the Eagles hosted the Tigers. The Eagles came out on top from their last outing against the Tigers, winning by 20 points at Glenelg. The bulk of the damage was done in the first half where the Eagles scored 11 goals to four. Although they took the foot off the pedal by comparison in the second half as the Tigers kicked eight goals to five, the Eagles were already away. The current minor premiers in waiting rebounded from their shock defeat at The Parade with a 25-point win against North Adelaide, while the Tigers were apparently back on track with consecutive wins including last week's demolition of Westies. Unfortunately for the Tigers, their premiership defence was once again going to be put in serious jeopardy. They would be held to just 1.1 in the opening term, while the Eagles scored 4.3 to lead by 20 points at quarter-time. The Eagles would then put a talon to the throat of the Tigers in the second term, keeping the reigning premiers scoreless and ramming through 6.8 to take their advantage out to 64 points by half-time. Glenelg must have been wasting their possessions, if you look at the clearances and hit outs they were almost even. They only had 18 less marks than the Eagles, yet they were down by 10 goals. They were being caught on the rebound a lot as well. Even when the Eagles had their off-quarter in the third term, the Tigers could only manage 2.6 to the Eagles' one behind. At three quarter-time, the Eagles were still up by 47 points. As quickly as the Eagles had their nap, they got back on task for the finishing quarter. The home side would ram through a further 6.3 to the Tigers' paltry 1.2, the visitors on the wrong end of a 13-goal smackdown. Jordan Foote notched up 32 disposals, kicked three goals and laid 12 tackles to be named best for the Eagles, the Tigers only real contributor was Matt Snook who ended up with 25 disposals and nine tackles.

The last game for the weekend takes us to the Prospect Oval for the battle of the inner north and the outer north, the Roosters clashing with the Bulldogs. The Roosters came out victorious by five goals from their visit to the Ponderosa back in Round 5, the best and worst of the Dogs was on show that day. After leading by 10 points at half-time, the Centrals engine room stalled in the second half as the Roosters kicked nine goals to three and claimed the points. The seventh-placed Dogs finally managed to take a scalp last week, winning by 13 points against the Redlegs at Elizabeth. The Roosters had hit a wall though, consecutive losses to the reigning premiers and the table-topping Eagles coming at the wrong time for a side that is supposed to be a major challenger for the 2020 title. The Roosters started off well enough in the windy conditions, although with that wind going their way in the first term they would lead by just 14 points at quarter-time with a score of 3.3 to 1.1. The Dogs, with a bit of renewed confidence after downing Norwood, brought that back to a couple of kicks by the half-time siren. The Roosters' accuracy was very much askew, scoring 2.8 to the Dogs' 4.2 as their lead was cut down to eight points at the long break. However that confidence was short lived. The Roosters ripped the keys out of the Bulldogs' ignition, holding them scoreless and scoring a game-breaking 8.6 to take their advantage out to 62 points going into the final change. Centrals' final term left many wondering what could have been if they weren't totally buried in that third quarter, they outscored the Roosters 7.3 to 2.3 to knock five goals off that three quarter-time deficit, North winning by 32 points in the end. Campbell Combe was named North's best on ground, with 34 disposals and eight marks. For the Doggies, it was James Boyd with his 38 disposals and nine marks.
