Hi Footy fans...

Many were hoping for a last minute appeal to the South Australian Government in order to allow more people into SANFL matches across the four grounds, but alas the 1,000 person cap was retained and for a second straight weekend the attendances either fell just short or never came close to reaching that number. Some believe that despite the fact that only season ticket holders would be allowed in, the thought of turning up and then being turned away at the gates was good enough reason to stay home. The SANFL, to their credit have given all registered club ticket holders access to the Digital Pass platform, allowing those who cannot attend a way to watch their team in action if they aren't on television. But one thing is for sure, people will no doubt start to get more than a little antsy and with a looming AFL game at the Adelaide Oval -- tonight, in fact as this post goes online -- which will apparently cater for at least 20,000 fans as compared to the paltry offering handed to us SA footy-heads, will restrictions be loosened in time for Round 5? Over to you, SA Health.

Welcome to the Round 4 edition of the SANFL Wrap-Up.

First up in this week's wrap, we head to Prospect Oval for the first of four Saturday afternoon games, the Roosters facing the Eagles. In an interesting fixturing move from last year, these two clubs not only faced off in their season opener but then had their return bout to close the season. The Eagles took first blood at Woodville to kick things of for 2019, winning by 25 points in front of just over 2,800 -- their second largest attendance of the year and one of three games to breach 2,000. North had the final word for the season, winning by 13 points at Prospect in Round 18 after the Eagles' inaccuracy-riddled second quarter left them open to counter attack in the second half. Both came in winners for this encounter, the Roosters withstanding a fast-finishing Tigers at Brighton Road while the Eagles pounded the Redlegs into the turf at Woodville. The first goal wouldn't come until the 12th minute mark as the Roosters went into the first change with a 13-point lead, the scoreboard reading 3.2 to the Eagles' 1.1. But the Eagles came away from the quarter-time huddle with a fire in their belly, tying up the scores by the long break. They kicked 4.3 to the Roosters' 2.2, both sides with 34 points a piece at half-time. The Eagles and the Roosters found goals much harder to come by when play resumed, the Eagles perhaps unlucky not to have gone into the final term with the lead. Their last shot on goal sprayed wide just short of 23 minutes, North would have a one-point lead at three quarter-time after having added 1.4 to 1.3. The Roosters' inaccuracy continued into the final quarter, but the Eagles had no such issues and finished strongly. They would leave Menzies Crescent with a 15-point win, closing the game with a 4.2 to 1.4 last term. Jordan Foote was a ball magnet, he racked up 34 disposals and kicked a pair of goals to win best on ground honours for the Eagles. In the Roosters camp, they named Andrew Moore as their best afield.

Onto Saturday game number two and we head over to the inner western suburbs and over to the newly re-named Hisense Stadium in Richmond for the "Clash of the Sashes" between the Bloods and the Tigers. The reigning premiers took out all the points on offer from their two games against Westies last year, while it was a far easier task at Tiger-land in Round 17 where they won by 75 points, their game in Round 5 was a different story. The Bloods were inexplicably ahead at all the changes, but blew their three quarter-time lead of 14 points to go down by 16 points... a five-goal turn-around. Westies almost pulled off an upset at Unley last weekend, but were downed by eight points by the Blues, while the Tigers' last term fightback against North fell three points short in the end. The Tigers peppered their attacking 50 early on, but were just eight points up at quarter-time after scoring 3.3 to the Bloods' 2.1. By the long break that gap was down to within a single straight kick as the Bloods scored three goals without a miss to the Tigers' 2.3, the visitors holding a five-point lead going into the rooms at half-time. When play resumed for the second half, it was Westies that were switched on while the Tigers seemed to go to sleep. Glenelg were held scoreless for the whole third quarter, the Bloods would have another flawless quarter of football as they scored four goals to take over the lead. At the final change, the home side were up by 19 points. The Tigers did wake up in time for the final quarter, kicking a pair of goals in five minutes to cut the deficit back to seven points. But the premiers were quiet from here, the Bloods' defence holding firm and their 1.3 score ensured them a 16-point victory, ending a four-game losing streak against Glenelg that began in Round 6 of 2018. Tom Keough kicked five goals including the match winner and best on ground for the Bloods and the Tigers named Chris Curran as their best.

The third match for the day takes us inner east of town and into the Coopers Stadium where the Redlegs fronted up against the Bulldogs. These sides shared the points from their two games last season, with the away side coming out on top. It started off in Round 2 at the Dog-pound, where the Redlegs won by three points but should have won by a lot more. The Dogs came from 41 points down at three quarter-time, but one last shot on goal went wide at the death. The return match in Round 17 belonged to the Bulldogs, winning by 19 points under the lights of The Parade in what was their last victory for the season. Both teams had not yet tasted victory up to this point, with the 'Legs copping a hiding from the Eagles and the Panthers leaving the Ponderosa with the points last weekend. An inaccurate opening term by the injury-hit Redlegs didn't stop them from being in the ascendancy at the first break, kicking 4.4 to Centrals' two goals to lead by 16 points at quarter-time. It was then the Dogs' turn to have accuracy issues in the second term as the gap widened to almost six goals going into the sheds, Norwood adding a further 3.4 to the visitors' four behinds. At half-time, the Redlegs led by 34 points. Centrals' horrid time in front of goals continued when play restarted for the second half, wasting several opportunities on goal as they scored 3.6. Norwood would add 4.3 to their score as their advantage was stretched to 37 points by three quarter-time. Just like their game at Elizabeth last season, the Dogs attempted a last ditch run to steal the game and brought Norwood back to within a couple of goals' reach late in the term with their 7.4. But a pair of Redlegs goals a few minutes on among their 4.3 secured their first win for the season, winning by three goals. Former Crow Richard Douglas racked up 34 disposals and kicked two goals to take best player honours for Norwood, while Justin Hoskin's six goals saw him voted best for Centrals.

Down to the last game for the round and we're off to the southern suburbs and into the Flinders University Stadium at Noarlunga for the game between the Panthers and the Double Blues. The Blues took out both games against their fellow southern Adelaide club last year, starting with a 22-point win at Unley in Round 5, then a six-goal victory at Noarlunga in Round 12. The Panthers were able to rebound from their loss to Glenelg, a dominating final quarter against the Dogs giving them a 44-point win at Elizabeth. The Blues also recovered from their loss to the Eagles, but had a far harder task against the Bloods at home which they won by eight points. The Panthers' shooting on goal left a bit to be desired in the opening term, but would take a three-goal lead into quarter-time after scoring 3.6 and holding the Blues to just one goal to begin the afternoon. The shoe was on the other foot in the second term though, the Panthers held to a single behind as the Blues brought their lead down to a single straight kick by half-time. Sturt scored 2.3, with South still up by four points at the break. But that shoe was back on South's foot when play resumed, the Blues just mere spectators as the Panthers took advantage of Noarlunga's trademark winds to score 5.3 to nothing in the third quarter. At three quarter-time, the Panthers were out to a 37-point lead. South would kick two more goals in the first seven minutes of the last quarter and were then forced into all-out defence as the Double Blues attempted to make a comeback. For around 20 minutes, South weathered the Sturt charge. The Panthers would allow the Blues to score 4.2, not even close to enough for the visitors as the home side took out a 23-point win. Former Power player Matt Broadbent was one of the vital cogs in defence and got best on ground votes for South, while the Blues named James Battersby as their best.
