Hi Footy fans...

This isn't going to be your usual intro to the weekly wrap this week, we're going to start with mental health. We people have copped it pretty sweet over the last nine months. With all that's been going on from the summer bushfires to the COVID-19 crisis, its not just your average folk that have been smashed from pillar to post. Our footballers, whether they be our SANFL players or the local heroes of suburban and country footy, are people too. So when the football season was put on hiatus, it wouldn't be surprising that for those that see footy as their outlet for some of life's frustrations, with the prospect of that being taken away from them would probably take a toll on the hardiest of people. This past weekend, community and SANFL clubs across the state observed the Breakthrough Community Round, helping to raise funds for mental health projects in South Australia. Sporting clubs for many people are more than just about the sport, its a sense of belonging and purpose especially in the communities that have been hit by it all this year. Remember folks, there's plenty of support out there if you or someone else you know is struggling.

Welcome to the Round 8 edition of the SANFL Wrap-Up.

This round begins with the first Friday night game of the year, which took place at the Hisense Stadium in Richmond where the Bloods faced the Roosters. Being a shortened and simplified season, its return match time and it was back in the season opener that the Roosters opened their 2020 account with a 29-point win at the Adelaide Oval. The Bloods' third term was what truly cost them in the end, until then they were only a single kick adrift as the Roosters kicked eight goals to four in the second half. Since then the Roosters have given up one game, while the Bloods are only off the bottom end by a game. With that being said, only North came into this game as a victor with their 19-point win against the Blues, while the Bloods went down to the top-placed Eagles by eight goals. With the Bloods' current record, the Roosters would have been hot favourites going in. But they ran into a seemingly different Bloods outfit tonight and would lead by just one goal at quarter-time, a trio of Westies goals late in the quarter keeping the visitors within strike. A lapse in attack in the second term by West allowed the Roosters to take over the lead at the long break, North scoring 4.2 to 1.3 to take an 11-point advantage at half-time. Unlike their Round 1 outing, in the third quarter it was going to be the Roosters that hit a speed bump. They managed just two goals as the Bloods went on the offensive to score 5.1. At three quarter-time, it was the Bloods back in the lead by seven points. Unfortunately for the home faithful, West couldn't keep up the intensity in the final term, the Roosters gradually re-taking control. West didn't go quietly, but one last shot on goal which probably would have nicked the points went wide with under a minute to go. North's 3.5 to 2.2 in that last quarter saw them escape with a one-point win. William Combe's four goals saw him named North's best afield, while the Bloods named Jordon Boyle as their best with 27 disposals.

The rest of the weekend's action was played out on Saturday, next we head down to the southern suburbs and into the Flinders Uni Stadium in Noarlunga where the Panthers hosted the Eagles. When these sides clashed in their first outing this year, the Panthers were the victorious outfit but did it the hard way. South led by 20 points at three quarter-time, but they would leak six goals to two in the final term and were down by a kick going into time-on. South then kicked a trio of majors to the Eagles' one goal to steal victory from the jaws of defeat by a single kick. Since then the Eagles have been undefeated, last weekend they downed West by eight goals while the Panthers were unlucky against a resurgent Norwood, losing by four points. The opening term wasn't what we'd have expected from either side, the Eagles managing just one goal while the South struggled with accuracy. The Panthers would lead by four points at quarter-time, the difference made up by the behinds they kicked with the board reading 1.4 to 1.0. The Panthers' horrid time in goal continued in the second term as the Eagles efficiency was ramped up, they scored 5.2 to 1.6 to lead by 16 points at the long break. When play resumed, the Panthers finally managed to string goals together to cut down the Eagles' advantage. Still, the Eagles efficiency compared to the peppering on goal that South were doing allowed the visitors to stay in front at the final change. South scored 4.3 to the Eagles' three goals, the deficit down to seven points at three quarter-time. But that is as close as the Panthers were going to get this time around, no last minute comebacks here as the Eagles restricted South to two behinds and scored 2.4 for themselves to leave Noarlunga with a 21-point win. VFL import James Tsitas has wasted little time getting into SANFL footy, taking best afield votes for the Eagles with his 25 disposals and five marks. South would name Paul Hunter as their best with his nine marks and 25 disposals.

From the outer south to the inner south now, its over to the leafy surrounds of Unley and to the Peter Motley Oval where the Double Blues played the Bulldogs. When these sides first met at the Adelaide Oval in their season opener, although the Blues won by 15 points all signs seemed to point towards a Dogs side that was perhaps on the improve from last season. But with only one point to their name, things have been looking rather bleak at Elizabeth. Both sides were on the wrong end of the stick last week, with the Blues going down to North at Prospect and the Dogs by 33 points to the reigning premiers. The Blues have been the bane of Centrals' existence for the last few years though, from Season 2016 to now the Blues have not dropped points to them from 10 consecutive clashes. The Dogs opened the scoring with the first major, but it was to be their only goal for the quarter. The Blues could only manage a single goal as well, but led by three points at quarter-time due to their six behinds to Centrals' three. The Dogs started the second term as they did the first with the first goal of the quarter, but this time the Blues didn't waste chances. By the half-time break, the Blues were away to a 28-point lead after scoring 5.2 to 1.1. The Bulldogs continued to waste their opportunities on goal when play resumed as the Blues put some distance between them. They would boot a further 6.3 to 2.4 in the third term as their advantage was now out to 51 points going into the final change. It would be just another disastrous outing for the hapless Bulldogs, the Blues breaking their four-game losing streak and taking an 11th consecutive victory against the northerners. Sturt finishing with four goals to 1.4 in the last term to run out 65-point winners. James Battersby is firming as Sturt's best and fairest this year, again named best afield for the Blues. The Bulldogs voted in James Boyd as their standout with 29 disposals.

The final game would take place under lights, a rare thing for the SANFL to have a Saturday night fixture but a welcome one as the Redlegs hosted the Tigers at Coopers Stadium in Norwood. The Redlegs began the year with a three-point loss to the reigning premiers, a wasteful final term allowing the Tigers to steal the points at the Adelaide Oval to begin the season. They lost the following two games before winning their next four games, including last week's four-point victory over South Adelaide at home. After another escape by the Tigers in Round 2, they fell into a three-game funk up until a fortnight ago when they won their next two games including last week against Centrals. Startling stat for Tigers fans -- their last win at The Parade was back in early 2011. Its been almost a decade between victories at Norwood and the Tigers looked pretty hungry early on, the Redlegs spurning a couple of opportunites to at least be on level terms at quarter-time as the Bays led by 10 points at the first change with their 3.1 to 1.3. The Tigers extended that lead to three goals by the long break, but could have been up by more after kicking 4.4 to the 'Legs 3.2 in the second quarter. When play resumed, the Tigers engine room stalled somewhat and their radar was a bit off. But the Redlegs weren't able to make up much ground here as the behinds rained down. A mere two points was shaved off Glenelg's half-time lead, Norwood scoring 1.2 to 0.6 to set a 16-point gap at three quarter-time. Norwood ground to a halt on the goal-front and the Tigers ran with it in the final term, running off to a 33-point win after adding a further 3.3 to four behinds to finish the night. Matt Snook racked up 34 disposals and laid nine tackles to be named Glenelg's best, while Brad McKenzie was Norwood's standout with 31 disposals and six marks.
