Because it means nothing to a reserves team. Particularly in comparison to a team competing for a shot at the highest prize it's club can achieve.

If that was true then all the 2nds and 3rds teams out there wouldn't try in their competitions either, which clearly isn't the case.

For some of these players a reserves flag might be the only chance at a flag they will ever get in their career. Plenty of VFL sides recognize this, just look at how sides like Box Hill go about it.

If the Crows think a reserves flag means nothing they should forfeit from the finals series

How could you be flat with a spot in the grand final on the line?
Weren't flat early, then the match grind kicked in 10 minutes into the third. Norwood ground us out. I don't think they didn’t care. Those guys wanted the win

In terms of developing AFL players, the age profile of that team is spot on. Not great for winning an SANFL flag though.

Guys today

Strachan
One AFL listed player with AFL experience over 25, Frampton.
One AFL listed player over 25 drafted midseason.
Both these guys 25.

Himmelberg
Matthew Wright.

Then the rest under 22 and top ups.

No 25 to 30 year olds solely playing SANFL on the AFL list, apart from the plug n play backup Ruckman in Strachan

The reality is if you are 25 and not a backup Ruck/KPP you should not qualify for SANFL Finals.

Which means the SANFL/Reserves Finals team will lack experience, which shows deep into a Finals campaign against hardened SANFL teams with more guys in their core years of Footy.

Predominantly top ups and 19-21 yr olds playing. No surprise they are not as harden as the 25-30 yr old Sanfl teams. I get there were a few younger guys out there for Norwood

The rain I think helped them as well. Made it more a tackle feat slog to get the ball anywhere. The bigger bodies of Norwood dominated that space. We really only had Turner to compete in the clinches

There was approximately 9 afl players with multiple preseasons under their belts.
I can’t believe fitness would be used as an excuse against a bunch of plumbers and carpenters.

Choked both chances at a GF spot in a very similar way. Really poor effort and result after coming 2nd and playing 3 finals.

And who would have thought, finally speaking up about the targeted umpiring against us worked
Didn't choke ......"kids" mostly in 1st or 2nd year ran out of gas .....couldn't apply any pressure & with exhaustion skills disappear

Zac Taylor disappeared after HT .....same Borlaise

We don't get to select a balanced side in the SANFL ....we have to play all our listed players, which causes us to be unbalanced, usually with talls

We had no run in the 2nd half, due to that inbalance ....also the SANFL game is different, in that defenders stay at home in position ......made for massive congestion at both ends of the ground

Newchurch putrid .....Sholl got a lot of possessions, but zero hurt factor .....Davis an "almost" AFL player, easy delist
Gollant, hard for him with no space and massive congestion

So more than half the squad haven’t? Surely it’s got to have an impact on the whole squad when more than half aren’t at the same level fitness or skills wise?

I’m not including all the listed players, just ones that should be superior.
I count 6 top ups plus wright and Hall.
The rest should at least be to the plumber/carpenter level fitness.

Team game though.

21 plumber/carpenters level of Footy fitness is a better spread across the board.

We didn't get thumped and had the lead from the start till under 10 minutes to go.

That difference in fitness/experience spread the difference.

Top up Smithson misses an easy run in goal. Newchurch or Wright have that shot we probably win.

Cant believe after such a massive choke there are still people that trip over themselves and a couple of others desperately getting in to defend the club, its coaches and players.

How can anyone excuse, or even be remotely happy with, that pitiful display we’ve witnessed in the last 4 weeks.. 3 games of pea heartedness.

Oh… and next time Himmelburgs contract is up.. if we are gonna re-sign him… can we please at least wait until after the season to do so..

Least then he will play his little heart out until the whistle in the last game..

He got his shiney new contract a few weeks back… and ever since he’s returned straight back to plodding along, jogging after his opponents and his second efforts have once again completely dissapeared.. and his cement hands have returned.

Player notes:

Himmelberg started hot and nearly won the game for us in the first with his efforts. Faded afterwards, but that's the life of a key forward. Still, very good.

McAsey. 3 goals in a preliminary final is a pretty good game. Didn't do much but took his chances well.

Gollant had a shocker. Couldn't get going and when he did, wasted his chances. One of those days for a tall forward.

Taylor had an excellent start, before fading as Norwood paid more respect to him. Still, I think he's put himself in a good position to get an early '23 debut.

Strachan was pretty meh. Norwood did an excellent job planning for him over the last week and deserve every bit of credit for it.

Borlase. Weird game. Was excellent most of the game defensively, but got punished with the couple of mistakes he did make. Could have been BOG in a win with a bit more luck.

Worrell has no real business playing SANFL and that game further showed it. Very solid game and one that showed the full range of tricks.

Cook and Nankervis played well for the most part. Game was too direct for wingers to really shine but both won most of the key moments they were invovled in (Nank fumbling a mark in the d50 was probably the only exception, but we didn't get punished for it). I was also impressed with both players work off the ball; especially Cook who had a few horror moments from being soft in the first final.

Sholl would probably want that game back. Too many soft moments or brainfades throughout.

I'll give Frampton credit. He put in and then some effort wise despite looking likely that he'll be at Collingwood next year. Still, he didn't play well with a few costly mistakes underpinning his game.

Newchurch. One goal, one what if play and not much else.

Turner was Adelaides best player. Ended up being a bit of a lone hand in the midfield in the end. He might have something to offer Adelaide in 2023 as a footballer. Especially if Pedlar can't stay fit.

Godden was tactically spanked. We looked panicked and disorganised for most of the game.

I was thinking the same thing. We missed his long left footed goals and pressure. I felt that we gave it a crack. Taylor seemed to get tagged after half time, which was a credit for his first half. Worrell and Turner both played well. The umps did a pretty good job this week, considering the rest of the year/years. Hopefully the lads can gain some great experience from the 3 finals that set us in good stead for the future.

So surely we are all going for Norwood rather than a team coached by a Port player and with 2 Port players
I'll probably check the scores and that's about it for my interest levels.

It was a pretty average team we put out. Our best mids were a mid season pick up and Zac Taylor. Had some decent talls but outside of that, not much.
Well if we hadn't made Hately the travelling emergency so many times, he'd have likely been eligible.

We need a better match day SANFL coach.

What a rubbish take. Finished 2nd after the season proper and faded away during finals. A team made mostly of kids, and top-ups…

Fantastic effort from the SANFL team this year.

My only concerns were

  • Newchurch might get a few moments on the highlights reel, but he’s a bust. Doesn’t have the consistency to stay in games. 3 seasons in and looks to have shown his ceiling, which is not AFL standard.
  • Cook. Regressed significantly throughout the year, and simply struggled to get his hands on the ball. Needs another preseason but you’d hope to see him getting a bit of manic energy into his game.
  • Gollant. Another to have regressed a fair bit as the season wore on, needs to do more defensively in the F50
  • McAsey. Not much else to say here but with Frampton heading out the door he surely makes his way to the backline and has 1 more year to perform a miracle in terms of his output.
  • Borlase. Probably gets kept on the list along with Newchurch, as they’re essentially a free hit, though normally I’d delist both
  • Pedlar. Repeat injuries hampering his ability to get some continuity into his game. Hopefully Burgess can get on top of this one during the preseason
