1. Removing the rule that the marquee player must be 26+

2. Greater access to the SANFL rookie program for 19 year olds (removed ability for SANFL clubs to block a player)

3. Improved payments.

• Base from 1k per game to 2k per game
• Match payments from 250 to 350 per game
• Marquee player from 15k to 20k total base payment
• and from 300 to 500 per game.

(Other SANFL clubs salary cap rises from 210k to 300k per year)

4. Allowing 2 year contracts (instead of a max of 1).

Seems like a whole lot of nothing TBH. Time will tell how we use it.

Do you mean base payment to sign as top up player means it increases from $1k to $2k and match payments per game has increased from $250 to $350?

Minor changes.

Would like to see AFL clubs be able to sign up to 3 or 4 ex-AFL players, a similar number of State league and country players from anywhere in Australia (no age limits), and up to 3 under 20 year olds who went undrafted for us to have a look at as possible mid-year draftees.

That would provide some level of onfield stability and mentoring/coaching for our younger players, to develop a winning culture and avoid 21 goal drubbings like versus North last season.

I'd be prepared to forgo participation in finals even if we finished top after the minor round, if we could help develop our kids better - and restore some pride in the PB's performances.

SANFL announces changes to its list rules

Following an annual review of the list rules and match conditions, the SANFL has announced a number of its changes to its list rules for Port Adelaide and the Crows.

In 2023, Adelaide and Port Adelaide can each select one 19 or 20-year-old player overlooked in their draft year as part of the SANFL Rookie Program, with the player having the autonomy to opt into the program once the SANFL club has been consulted in the first instance.

Once a player decides to opt in, their SANFL club will be financially compensated.

This year, AFL clubs must select their SANFL Rookie Program player in their SANFL League team each week, immediately after their AFL-listed players and marquee player.

Father-son and Next Generation Academy players can opt into the SANFL Rookie Program without approval from their SANFL club.

2023 SANFL Payment Structure for AFL Clubs

SANFL LISTED PLAYERS AT AFL CLUBS
Base Payment – $2000 (2023) up from $1000 (2022)
Match Payment – $350 (2023) up from $250 (2022)
Total Base Payments – $10,000 (2023) up from $5000 (2022)

MARQUEE PLAYERS AT AFL CLUBS
Base Payment – $20,000 (2023) up from $15,000 (2022)

Port and the crows are signed up to 2028 at this stage but can cancel that. Tassie to enter in 2027,and new CEO has to have a legacy piece after Gil will do everything else before he goes.

So 2028 or 2029 probably is national reserves comp.

Yes, exactly. Minor cosmetic changes dressed to look like major concessions. The AFL Clubs participating in the SANFL are nowhere near the level playing field enjoyed by the remaining SANFL clubs all of who have under age teams, a full Reserves side and can sign ex Power and Crows players. I would be happy if we were allowed to retain up to 5 players who had been on our AFL list for a minumum of 5 years. That would mean we could have players like Broadbent, Moore, Young and Hartlett on our books. It really pisses me off when I see players like these playing against us.

The Murdoch Press did give us some credit though, they reported that these minor changes came about because Port threatened to leave the SANFL. Any changes are thanks to the efforts of the PAFC and not those compliant slugs from West Lakes.

The changes aren't nearly enough, but it's good to see some tacit acknowledgement from the Sanfl of where the money comes from for football in this State.

They'll have trouble keeping the lights on regardless i'd suggest.

The SANFL going down (not necessarily all the clubs, but the league as a whole) will be very satisfying.
